is my baby constipated? kinda stupid question, but please help!

ok... i feel dumb asking this, but i don't know if my DD (4 weeks old, FF) is constipated?

over the last week i've noticed that she strains a lot when she goes. i've also noticed some solid poops.

yesterday she seemed uncomfortable, so i stimulated her with a lubricated q-tip, and she passed some hard poop followed by normal-looking soft poop.

did the same this morning and she passed some hard-ish poop. but then a little while ago she had a poop that was pretty much normal.

i can't tell if she's constipated or if she's passing all that she needs to pass. i'm not sure if i should be doing anything more about this?

TIA!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

definitely sounds like she's constipated. Chat Icon

My ds was the same way when he was that age, but much worse. We had to change formula's because of it because he was so incredibly uncomfortable and nothing helped.

I would talk to your ped about it. You can give diluted prune juice, but not sure how much (i think 1 ounce). I did not want to do this (especially to a newborn) so we simply kept trying different formulas until we found one that worked for him. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You will figure out what is normal for your DD.

Unless it looks hard and like rabbit pellets or hard adult feces, it's likely not constipation.

They will strain and cry normally when going.

yeah... it kinda does look like pellets or like little logs (sorry, tmi!) at times... but not all the time. i guess that's why i'm unsure, but it sounds like this is not completely normal. Chat Icon

Alot of kids get constipated particularly if they are formula fed. For me my ped gave me the Ok to give her an ounce of water to try to soften her poop when she was about 4 months old (that is when we began to transition to formula). I would definitely talk to you ped, but try not to worry, like I said before alot of kids go through this, its a matter of finding what works for your child. I would caution against overusing the Q tip trick as they could end up relying on that to go.

ITA!

If she seems okay and not in too much pain, than i'd wait for thursday. Chat Icon But if she's in pain.... straining and nothing is coming out, crying out when trying to poop, etc... then i'd call.
