I'm comparing the 23.2 oz powder tubs (that's the normal tub- not the BJs size) to the 24 packs of 8oz rtf bottles (the ones you just screw a nipple to)

A 24 pack of 8oz rtf bottles is $38 at bru. Sometimes there's a sale but I'm not going to count that.

A 23.2 oz tub of similac from bru is 24.79- but I'm even counting it as $22.29 because there is a $5 off two tubs coupon pretty much always around, plus I'm pretty sure it is always 22.50 from Target. The tub yields 168oz of formula (it says it on the the label)

So:
rtf is 8oz x 24bottles = 192oz
$38/192oz = 20 cents an ounce (rounded up actually from 19.7)

powder is 168oz
$22.50/168 = 13 cents an ounce

So there is a 7 cent difference per ounce.

My 5 month old drinks 4 eight ounce bottles a day so each bottle of rtf costs 56 cents more.

Times 4 bottles = $2.24 more a day
x 30 (a month) = $67 more a month to never wash bottles again.

Haha you think like me.

Not to make it more complicated, but have you priced out the BJ's or Costco tubs if they sell them? Because those would probably be even less per ounce for powder in which case it would be a bigger price difference to go to RTF.

But if you wouldn't be shopping there anyway, then I would calculate as you did.

The other thing is that as your DD starts drinking more per day, your price difference will also increase. So eventually it might be $80 or $100 or whatever more per month to stick to RTF.

But then there's the time saving aspect also - with RTF you never have to prepare formula again or wash bottles as you mentioned, so it all depends on how much that aspect is worth to you Chat Icon

unless your child is taking 8oz PER feeding, then those bottles could potentially be very wasteful!
If your DS/DD is only taking 6 oz per feeding, you are throwing 2oz down the drain. Unless you plan on saving it and putting it into the next bottle, and then you are back to using bottles!

Oh I'd rather spend the $67 more a month not to have to wash bottles. Another poster mentioned the cost of soap and water plus your time -- well worth $67 a month to me =) Plus you don't have to mix formula, just shake, twist on the nipple and voila!

I actually looked at the BJs tub and the price seemed the same as bru with the deals they always have. Someone on here told me that BJs sells the 8 Oz but either they were wrong or just mine does not.

We do get a Poland spring delivery every month, so I could probably subtract about $8 a month for Ds' share- and would lighten my delivery accordingly. Soap is a good point but I don't have it in me to even try the calculation, haha.

My Ds drinks between 7 & 8 ounces per feeding, so I always make 8 anyway and sometimes have to throw out an ounce.

I guess I was surprised bc people always make it sound like rtf is waaaaaay more.

My ds2 is 5 months drinking 32oz a day. My ds1 only drank less and less formula as he ate more and more solids.

I thought that was the norm but another pp said the same thing as you. Hmm. Maybe my kids are light eaters? God knows I'm not! Haha

I see everything in what that $$ could buy...so to me spending $67 or more a month just to not wash a bottle after every feeding isn't worth it. I see $67 as 2 cases of diapers. or almost 3 cans more of powdered formula

ETA: I always hold on to two empty powdered formula cans bc I often buy the tub refill packs which are cheaper than the cans of powdered

I think those cases only come with 1 nipples, so you'd have to buy those as well

This is what I was going to say, those nipples have to be bought separately, and you can only order them online and it can add up.

But I give you credit for all your calculations, and agree bottle washing is annoying.

you forgot to add in the price of the nipples...

its about $30 per every 24 nipples. unless you plan on washing the nipples.

nipples are not included in the cases.

The disposable nipples are something insane, like $1 each, lol. I can't imagine anyone using one and tossing it for each feeding.

For the 8oz rtf nipples all you have to do is pop the aluminum out of some of the twist tops (I have about 10 and rotate/wash them) and my dr brown's nipples fit right in and never leak. So, yes I still wash the rims and nipples.

I've never seen a tub refill pack. Where do they sell that? Is it Similac or another brand?

What about the times when DC just needs 2-4 oz? Then you are refrigerating open rtf and I'm not sure how long those last like that?

For $67 a month, I would rather get a clenaing lady once a month. That's worth MUCH more to me than washing bottles!

Definitely has to be what you consider "worth it" or not.

$67 a month not to wash bottles just isn't worth it to me at all. I would use that for diapers or our LIPA bill. If it was something like $10 a month I might consider it.

To spend $804 MORE a year ($67x12 mos) just to not wash bottles, well that's a wknd away or 2 car payments in our household.

You're right. That's why I hadn't considered it until now that Ds is consistently drinking 8 ounces.

The rtf big bottles never seemed worth it bc from the fridge I still have to dirty a bottle and warm it- but from the shelf he takes it just fine.

When i am out of the house i only use the 8oz rtf bottles. I dont know how much it is extra because i dont care, the convenience is worth it. At home i use powder since i cant justify the expense when i have a sink and dishwasher at my disposal. If i were loaded$ i def would only use those though.

I may do this next time around, my ds loves the ready to feed stuff, but I always thought it was more expensive... I dont know i think it could end up wasteful, but so does the tubs sometimes when you have to guess bottle size for a growing kid

I know CVS has them...and I THINK I may have seen them at BJ's but when I went back for it they were cold out.

ETA: sorry I was referring to Enfamil...thats what I use. I'm surprised similac doesn't have the same though

I wouldn't spend $800 over a year to have to avoid washing bottles, personally.

But I also use generic formula because it's soo much cheaper.
