I think it's worth it. The cheaper brands get scratched more easily in my experience. The more expensive ones feel better and are sturdier. (I haven't tried all brands though.)
I don't ever lose my glasses though. If I lost them a lot, I would buy only cheap ones.
Interesting...do you think that maybe you treat them better because they are more money and you don't want to scratch them, but the cheaper ones it's like "ah, it doesn't matter, I'll just get another pair" ?
**Not just YOU, just a general question. Because I think if I bought a pair of $200 ones I would make sure not to loose or scratch them
This is what I'm thinking. I always get the cheap ones and they get all scratched to h*ll or broken, but I don't take very good care of them. If I spent a lot of money on them I would definitely pay more attention to taking care. I was in Macy's the other day and was looking at expensive, designer sunglasses and didn't see any difference, so I was wondering if I was missing sometihng.
In the past I never did because like PP have stated with my less expensive ones were easily scratched, lost, etc. but now I have a pair of designer sunglasses and I take care of them. If i'm not wearing them they go right into the case they came with and I'm extremely careful with them.

I spend the money on designer sunglasses but only because they are going to be prescription. I think if I didn't need them I might by cheapies.
I do think the quality is better in some of the more expensive ones. The also sit better on your face IMO. Cheap ones usually bend or are crooked and sometimes even have rough edges on the arms.

I buy tons of sunglasses from Century 21. I throw my sunglasses around so much, in my bag, no case etc. I can't even imagine spending big dollars on them.

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
I always buy designer ones
when I get sick of them- I re-sell them on ebay
I alway keep them in the case- except for the time I put them down in a dressing room and made the next persons day
I rarely pay for price for a pair- unless I HAVE to have them - like the ones I lost
but saks off 5th and Neimans last call has tons for less then $100

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
I think it is worth it. Last year, I finally splurged a bought a pair of Chanels. My DH was opposed of the purchase b/c I am NOTORIOUS FOR LOSING THINGS. I thought since I spent so much on them, nothing would happen to them. Needless to say, they lasted one summer and are now gone.
I still shop for the high end ones b/c the quality is there. They sit on your face properly, and my make up does not get all over them when I put them on.
This year I compromised and bought a pair of BCBGs that were just under $100. It'll be sometime before I trust myself to splurge again, or before DH will "forgive" me for loosing them so quickly.
To justify any spend, my BF and I think of days per wear, and what the actual item costs per day to wear them.
Example: Chanels = $365 Sunglasses can be worn virtually every day = 365
$365/365 = $1 per day - totally worth it, AND they pay for themselves in one year!!

I think it's worth it. I used to love the cheapies for all the reasons listed by other posters, but I started splurging and the quality is so much better. Designer glasses have better UVA/UVB protection -eye wrinkles are a huge concern for me. You can get good deals, my last pair I bought at the Coach outlet (originally $180) for $65! I spend more on gas in a week, LOL

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
I think it does make a difference. But I am talking about real sunglasses not ones you bought for the name like Coach, Gucci, etc. My DH has a pair of Maui Jims that are awesome. I have a pair of expensive glasses too I can't remember the brand but they do protect your eyes.

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
absolutely! I've had my Maui Jim's for well over 5 years (they were $250) and would buy another pair like that in a heartbeat. I really love the high quality polarized lenses - they give me better vision. I could never go back to $20 sunglasses now.
before I bought them I was always losing sunglasses. but I guess once I made that kind of investment, I made an effort to be more careful and not lose them. 2 yrs ago they snapped in half and MJ sent me a brand new pair for free. all I had to was pay $7 for S&H.

My Maui Jim shades are definitely worth the money.
I've had a couple pairs of Chanel sunnies and they were crap next to the MJs. They've since been tossed in the garbage. They just don't even compare to MJs.
My Cartier sunglasses are very well made, but they're not worth their retail price. You're definitely paying for the label.

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
Best pair of designer sunglasses I ever got was on the day of the big blackout in 2003 in Manhattan. I was stuck on a park bench in Central Park. Someone left a pair of Gucci glasses on the bench. I picked them up and thought they were fake. Til I put them on and they screwed up my eyes. I figured they were prescription. Since I was stuck in the city and couldnt drive out, I stayed there in case the person came back for the glasses - they didnt. I took them to an optician, asked them to se if they were legit frames and they were. For about $30, they popped in non Rx lenses and voila! $30 Gucci sunglasses.

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
I dont only because DH's boss gave him a $250 pair a few years ago that he lost at the zoo the very next day. Now he has been wearing a $15 pair (the same ones) ever since!

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
yup, i think it's worth it.
I always bought the cheapies, but last year I caved and got Moschino frames - good quality, made in Italy - with Rx lenses. I'll NEVER buy a cheapy pair again! (Unless I know I'm going somewhere I'll ruin the good ones, like the beach or something.)

Re: Is spending $$ on sunglasses worth it?
The one difference I notice between the cheapies and the designer is that the cheapies tend to sit unbalanced on my face. I've never seen that with a more $$$ pair.
I take very good care of my sunglasses, mostly because it's hard for me to find a pair that looks good on me, so I don't mind spending more for them. The last time I broke a pair of sunglasses it took me an entire year - no joke - to find another pair of sunglasses that I liked.
