Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
Moderator wrote a relatively pro-Obama/pro-Obama-esque politics book...
Does this matter? Does that change the tone of the debate?
Talk amongst yourselves.
(I bring it up only because I just saw a hint of it myself...)

I think it is totally biased and if it were the other way around, the leftwingers would be in an uproar. But that is what this whole election year has been about so far, double standards.

Re: Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
She hasn't even finished writing her book yet and has not even begun to do the research on the part that focuses on Obama. The book is about African Americans in the political landscape in general, Obama leads the pack as he's come the furthest thus far in being a nominee for president. She's writing about many politicians, he's the "media" focus currently becuase he's running for president. She is and has been a well respected and highly regarded journalist on both sides for many many years. This is a smear tactic and "no fair" according to McCain. Cry me a river.
The woman takes her job and moderator position seriously. Again it's the media making a mountain out of a molehill.

I'll ask it again.
Fact or fiction - she will profit far more if Obama wins?

There was at least one time when she allowed Palin to go over.
As for Ifill's book- I am an Obama supporter, but I haven't read the book so I can't say if it's biased. From what I've heard, though, it's about African-American politicians in general, and for him or not, you can't deny that his nomination is very significant.

Actually, McCain said he had absolutely no problem with her moderating and was certain that it wouldn't be an issue - it is a little strange though.

If Ifill was making a book about women in politics and she wrote a whole section that had to do with Palin's nomination, it would be considered biased for her to moderate this debate.
Again, whether or not she's writing an entire book about Obama, she is advertizing the book about him. He's in the TITLE. She will profit from this election if he wins. Therefore, she's baised.

We won't know until sales figures are in. Just because he wins doesn't necessarily mean that more people will run out and buy a book written by a PBS journalist, albeit a respected one, about the african american political landscape throughout history, to turn a profit. True politicos (the probable buyers) will find the subject matter as a whole interesting whether or not O wins...as a matter of fact, his progress so far and the battle itself are interesting and monumental in themselves. along with the story of Colin Powell and the many other on whom the book focuses, whether or not obama wins I don't think matters that much to the sales in the end. But only time will tell.

I'm sorry but I agree with John McCain who said that Ifll is a professional and is completely qualified to be the VP debate moderator.
She is writing a book about African Americans in politics throughout the 20th century - including Obama.
You can be a scholar and write a history book and still moderate a debate.
After watching the debate I'd say that apart from her stumbling over her words a few times - and her forgetting that Biden and Palin get rebuttals in the first question, she did fine.
I thought this debate was a lot better than the Presidential debate - the questions were better and the answers more succinct.

Re: Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
yet Tom Brokaw is a good friend of McCain, and he's moderating the next debate. Do you hear a "liberal" outcry? No. B/c it's silly.
And let's be clear here-
McCain's campaigned AGREED to allow Ifill to moderate this debate. The info about her book has been out there since November of 2007...11 Months. The campaigns agreed to the moderators in AUGUST. Where was the "outrage" then from the people that matter, i.e., the candidates????
This is a Right-wing Nut spun "controversy".

I don't think it is a crazy question to ask - I think Obama's people have a right to wonder the same thing if they believe they may be biased in some way - to say that they can't question her bias and to say it is a Nut spun controversy is a little overreaching

I agree that it's not a far fetched question- we should always question the motives of our source- but i also don't think that there's anything substantial behind it.

Re: Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
When I first saw the title to this post last night I made sure to look for any signs of bias or favoritism. Honestly, I know nothing about the moderator, so I feel I'm an objective observer in this. Without having any notions about who she is and what role she plays in this election, I truly thought that she seemed to be nicer to Palin. There were more than 3 times where she said to Biden something to the effect that...you stood for that back then, but now seemed to have changed...I thought that was a bit undermining. I realize that Biden holds a public office and has a track record that can be scrutinzed, so maybe that was the reason that he got that from her and Palin didn't. But I missed the parts where she demonstrated preferential treatment...unless it was to Palin, which surprised me.
