I'm sorry but I agree with John McCain who said that Ifll is a professional and is completely qualified to be the VP debate moderator.
She is writing a book about African Americans in politics throughout the 20th century - including Obama.
You can be a scholar and write a history book and still moderate a debate.
After watching the debate I'd say that apart from her stumbling over her words a few times - and her forgetting that Biden and Palin get rebuttals in the first question, she did fine.
I thought this debate was a lot better than the Presidential debate - the questions were better and the answers more succinct.
Agreed.

I must live under a rock, because I never heard of her before last night or anything about this whole topic. So, having watched the debate not knowing any of this, I didn't notice a bias.

Re: Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
this is effing disgusting and I feel horribly for Gwen Ifill.
I think she did an EXCELLENT job and was very fair (as she had been in every other debate she's moderated)
she is VERY respected and was agreed to by both sides.
she has been working on this book for YEARS.
If she was writing a book about old white men no one would bat an eye...as they SHOULDN"T.
this has been the worst and most unfounded attack on a media person by the repubs in my opinion.

before the debate: i thought that she should have stepped down
after the debate: i think she did a good job and that there was no bias that I noticed.

Re: Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
i am not sure about this but i thought that the book issue came out after the campaigns agreed on the moderators.
i thought the issue was that folks thought that 1)Ifill shouldnt' have accepted knowing that it was in the works, even if it wasn't public info yet; and 2) she should have recused herself once it was public info so that there was no bias, but also so there was no perception of bias.
i think that she should have stepped down.
and, i believe that if the same thing had happened in reverse, the media would be going NUTS about.
after watching the debate, i will say that i think gwen ifill definitely tried to be objective. overall i think the questions were fair and she by and large succeeded. i did think there were times the bias showed through a bit.

Its completely biased. She is majorly invested in the turnout of this election. She should not be moderating this debate, its completely inappropriate.
I think I know the *hint* you are talking about btw. I noticed it as well.
Me too and I thought that was terrible!
Seriously--what was it?

so far she has cute Palin off 3 times, yet Biden went over his time and she never cut him off. yeah...really impartial there
I didn't want her cutting Palin off AT ALL b/c I wanted her to keep rambling on in circles....by cutting her off she was probably helping her out IMO

what times? I really did not see any bias in the questions. Please explain. I'm not trying to be difficult I just want to know where these perceptions are coming from.

The book issue was written about in the press in July. The parties agreed on the moderator in August.

Re: Is the moderator biased? Can that sway the questioning/direction of the debate?
I think she was fair and did a great job.
She even let Palin go off topic many times. Palin regardless of the questions, kept asking if she could go back to the energy issue. She let her do it quite a few times. Letting her not answser the questions asked. I am not sure how biased that made her since it should have been the opposite if she was really biaised.

The issue is that she did not disclose the book to the Commission on Presidential Debates. That is clearly information that the commission should have had when putting candidates forward as moderators. For her or anyone to just write off the criticism that it was wrong to not disclose that info is IMO absurd. I don't think that a moderator should have any potential financial interest, even if it's indirect. It's a matter of fairness and also a matter of perception of fairness. And, there is no excuse for not disclosing it to the commission.

There was at least one time when she allowed Palin to go over.
As for Ifill's book- I am an Obama supporter, but I haven't read the book so I can't say if it's biased. From what I've heard, though, it's about African-American politicians in general, and for him or not, you can't deny that his nomination is very significant.
I've heard the same about the book. I have not read it, nor can anyone since it has not been released yet.
I thought she was fair. I would have liked her to step down though just so conservatives can't cry that the media is treating Palin unfairly, again.
Face it, she isn't up to the job. Bill O'Reilly could have moderated the debate and she still wouldn't be up to the job.

i did think there were times the bias showed through a bit.
what times? I really did not see any bias in the questions. Please explain. I'm not trying to be difficult I just want to know where these perceptions are coming from.
first - i'd like to point out that this sentence was part of a paragraph where i said that i thought ifill tried to be objective and by and large succeeded. this sentence in that context means only that i think there were SOME times it showed. i know you pulled that line out bc that is what you are curious about, but its important for me to make it clear that i am not saying the whole thing was bias.
a couple examples...
i think there were times that she could have pressed biden and didn't, when she did palin. one example - the question about if they had to reneg on any campaign promises in light of the economic crisis. biden answered -- rethink the amt of foreign aid and then went on to talk entirely about not doing this that bush did or that that mccain is proposing. the latter was more than 3/4 of his answer. palin's answer wasn't direct and ifill said "so there isn't anything you can't deliver on?" or something to that effect. i know that biden mentioned one thing he'd rethink, but she could have made a comment to him that she was asking what they couldn't do that they promised, NOT what they didn't think was a good idea that the R's did or wanted to do. after all, we all know that they don't agree with bush or mccain's policies already...
i also thought it was notable that she didn't ask any questions about energy. (i know palin talked about energy anyway...so we don't need to go there). but, in my mind energy and the price of gas is a BIG issue domestically for american voters. it also impacts the economy in a big way. it's an issue that palin would have had an easy time answering and some would argue she had an adv in answering over biden. not asked. i don't think it a coincidence. JMO
i also think that she should have in her opening comments addressed the issue of the book that she is writing and the controvery about it the few days prior to the debate. should have been full disclosure with the commission and with the american public. Again, JMO
but, truly, i thought overall she did a a good job being fair.... so, please keep that in mind. i elaborated on my comment that i thought there were times it showed bc asked...
