Re: Is the move from GA to LI worth it?

The higher paying jobs are obviously closer to the city, but I live out east and we happy where we are at. There are some towns out east that aren't as expensive. I'm a sahm right now by choice, and we live comfortably.
To be honest, this really isn't true of all careers. There are VERY high paying jobs ALL over the island, you don't need to be close to the city to make a lot of money.

I've never moved from Long Island, but I know I'm one of the ones that won't ever leave. So I can't comment on moving from another area. But here are my thoughts
The higher paying jobs are obviously closer to the city, but I live out east and we happy where we are at. There are some towns out east that aren't as expensive. I'm a sahm right now by choice, and we live comfortably.
Besides the snow, the rest of the seasons I think are great! Our summers only get really hot for a few weeks if that, and There's a lot to do any direction you go in.
I'm not sure of the hr job market, but I'd be willing to guess you could find something decent.
Also, I am not in an interracial relationship but my sister is. I could be wrong, but in my opinion it's much more accepted here than other places especially the south. Her stepson who is also interracial does well in school. I've never heard anything bad. I feel like it's becoming the norm here. I'm sure it's not perfect, but from what you are describing where you live sounds terrible!
Good luck with your decision!
ETA: I'm curious what town your husband grew up in? Some towns are more segregated than others. I truly believe there's a place that fits everyone here. And I just asked my sister about her thought being interracial and she said it's a non issue.
DH was born in Brooklyn and his family moved to Ronkonkama and that's where we'd be living with his family if we move. When you say out east what cities does that include? I've looked at a few and I must admit that the cost of housing up there is bonkers! Here, you could easily get a 3 bedroom/ 2 bath house for $130k or rent it for $900 a month. Up there its like $475+ and the rent is $2500. That's insane to me but only because I've never lived somewhere like that.
I live in Ronkonkoma. My house is much less than 475 (by about 175k) but I bought in a different market. It is very white here. We may need a new house in the future because my daughter has a disability and we have a lot of steps. We will be looking elsewhere. It's ok for now and we're pretty happy here but I know we'd be happier elsewhere.

Not worth it. Long Island has terrible weather, high taxes, and is overcrowded. I would never recommend moving here.

Re: Is the move from GA to LI worth it?
no one but the two of you can answer such a question. What one person views as worth and a good life the next person might not.
If I didnt live on LI I would not move here and Im always shocked when i hear someone did. Its very $$$, apartments are $$$$$$$ and hard to find, jobs too unless you are willing to travel to NYC. As far as comments bc your in an interracial marriage, that can be found anywhere you live. You might eve hear it on LI. Sorry you had to experience it where you live now.

I wouldn't move here. I love LI but I would leave if I could. Another huge expense is commuting. The train ride from Ronkonkoma is at least an hour each way and costs over $300 per month.

Re: Is the move from GA to LI worth it?
I live in ronkonkoma and it's not very diverse. It's also Trump nation which lends me to believe a lot of conservative thinking, which also means some backwards thinking people here. You can definitely get a home for the mid 300's this far east on the island, taxes will run you between 8-13k some higher depending on property size/house. As someone mentioned earlier if you have to commute to the city on the LIRR it's a long and expensive commute. My dh did it for 6 years, it's 3 hours of commute time everyday and you will always be delayed, some times stranded for hours if issues happen on the track. Also daycare is very expensive here if you need that.

I agree. We only moved here 2 years ago from the city and we got a GREAT deal on our house (like our equity went up almost $150K in 2 years) BUT if I could take my parents, sister and nephew with me I would leave LI. It's soo expensive. The commute is super pricey and it's more $$ the farther out you live. The LIRR just raised its prices again.
Don't get me wrong I love my neighborhood, the beaches in the summer and the fact that my immediate family is close by BUT if we had no family ties to the area DH and I would leave ASAP.

Is the move from GA to LI worth it?
A friend of mine recently moved out of Long Island. She didn't want to move too far away as she had family on Long Island. She also wanted affordable housing, a reasonable commute to NYC and a school district with diversity. She found this in Ossining, NY. She has lived there almost a year and her family is very happy there! Here is another site you can check out for information on NY areas http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-york/
