Is there a difference between daycare for toddlers and preschool for toddlers?
I've been researching both preschools and daycares. There are a bunch of "preschools" for 18 month olds. I wonder how different they are from daycare. All the daycares I have visited seem to have decent curriculums. The preschools are all 9-3, 12-3, or 9-3. Daycares just have longer hours available.

Yes. There is.
Daycare for a toddler is similar to daycare for an infant, all day with a circulum. I have seen in my travels that daycares do become more flexible with their hours/days at the toddler stage.
Pre-school is like you said, shorter hours, two/three days a week, but with a circulum as well...
You've got time, my DS is 2 and we haven't done this yet

Another big difference is the regulations. Daycares are regulated by the Office of Children and Family Services and are required to let inspectors in to check compliance. Preschool is regulated by the Department of Education and there is NOT the same level of regulation or inspection.

Good to know, I was not aware of this.

Actually the preschool that I am sending my son to was listed on the office of child and family services and listed any violations.

Then it is also a daycare. Licensing etc was the issue surrounding Carousel Day School (the place where the little girl choked on the carrot). Because it was a preschool OCFS couldn't go in and inspect b/c it was governed by the Board of Education. The fact that many parents don't know/realize the difference is (IMHO) one of the reasons Carousel was able to operate a daycare center without anyone reporting it as a violation b/c everyone *thought* they were in compliance.

Are the curriculums pretty much the same?
So the main difference is hours of operation and regulation only.

I think it depends There is a school I wanr my son to go to since I think it is more "school" oriented than his daycare. He will go when he is 3 years old. My main problem with this school is the hrs--it is closed on the scjhool holidays like xmas break and easter and summer So the main difference is hours of operation and regulation only.

Re: Is there a difference between daycare for toddlers and preschool for toddlers?
Day Cares in NYS are regulated by the Office of Children and Families. We have regulations that we must follow, pertaining the the staff requirements and such. Truthfully the only difference is going to be the hours. If the staff doesn't meet the criteria the Day Care will not get their license. Now I don't know what the requirements are for preschool and toddlers (Day Cares can have teacher's that have a CDA) I would decide how long you need the program for and go from there.
