Re: Is there a good low or no sugar alternative to Cheerios?
I had bought the purely o's for DD but she didnt like them and when I tasted them they seemed very salty to me- should have checked the sodium content. Now she has reg cheeios for a snack but its only sometimes and they have 1g of sugar so not bad.

they do not have any sugars in the ingredients list. they do have 1g of sugars in the nutrition facts list, which i assume is from carbs breaking down.
QUOTE]
Sugar is sugar. Where you see Sugar listed, it's SUGAR. Where you see the listing for Carbs, is carbs. The nutritional info does not list sugars in the facts as sugars "from carbs breaking down."
Looking at the nutritional info for both. the two cereals aren't that much different.
BUT
sugars are derived from differnt things, sugar can be different.
Sugar in say fruits is a "better" sugar then sugar in cereals. Its from the Fruit "breaking down" versus added by a manufacturer to make it taste better KWIM?
So where its placed in an ingredient list means something.
I'm speaking of these TWO cereals.
wait, i'm confused.
there is NO sugar listed as an ingredient(or honey, or high fructose corn sweetners, or cane juice, etc.) which means no sugar was added.

Re: Is there a good low or no sugar alternative to Cheerios?
There is no sugar added to the Cascadien farms O's.
There is sugar added to cherrios ( albeit a low amount)
The nutriotnal info is not similiar at all
cherrios: Ingredients: Whole grain oat, modified corn starch, corn starch, sugar, salt, trisodium phosphate, calcium carbonate, monoglycerides, tocopherols, wheat starch, annatto, vitamins & minerals: niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin b6), folate, iron.
O's Organic Whole Oat Flour, Organic Barley Flour, Organic Wheat Starch, Sea Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc and Iron, Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate), a B Vitamin (Niacinamide), a B Vitamin (Calcium Pantothenate), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Vitamin B1 (Thiamin Mononitrate), Vitamin A (Acetate), a B Vitamin (Folic Acid), Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol), Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols).
trisodium phosphate which is an ingredient in Cherrios to extend its shelflife is actually in larger quantites a heavyt duty CLEANER which people use to clean walls before painting etc. just happens to help with shelf life as well..
Annatto is also a key ingredient....It has been linked with many cases of food-related allergies, and is the only natural food coloring known to cause as many or more reactions than artificial food coloring
So..NO..The two are not comparable AT ALL ....

Re: Is there a good low or no sugar alternative to Cheerios?
To clarify, I think I confused you. what I'm saying is that you said that the Purely O's only has 1 g of sugar, which is true, so does the regular Cheerio's, BUT I'm saying that the nutritional info for both the Purely O's and Cheerio's are more or less the SAME. That's all I'm saying. I don't want people going hysterical and boycotting the regular Cheerio's. That's all.

cherrios: Ingredients: Whole grain oat, modified corn starch, corn starch, sugar, salt, trisodium phosphate, calcium carbonate, monoglycerides, tocopherols, wheat starch, annatto, vitamins & minerals: niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin b6), folate, iron.
OK...what the HECK are all those ingredients??? And you can be sure that if I can't pronounce, my daughter won't be eating it!

There's nothing really bad in there, vitamins, grains, flavor, sugars and a preservative-which ALL non natural foods that dont' come directly from the earth have. Only one i don't know is Tocopherols..i'll look it up
Tocopherols is a form of Vitamin E Source
ETA: Annatto is a flavoring(spice)-My cheerios box at home doesn't list that as an ingredient.

What are monoglycerides?
Its hydrogenated oil/fat. Usually listed as mono-diglyceride Otherwise known as trans fat Something to look for in ingredients.
That too!

BOth of these ingredients are not on my Regular cheerios box at home. It lists TRIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, not trisodium phosphate. And DOens't list Annatto at all. WHere are you guys getting list ingredient list from?
From a website...
iii) Tripotassium phosphate
Tripotassium phosphate is a potassium salt of phosphoric acid used as an antioxidant synergist, buffer and emulsifier in food.
Typical products include cooked and other cured meats, milk and cream powders, drinking chocolate

Re: Is there a good low or no sugar alternative to Cheerios?
OK... I didn't mean this post to start a HUGE debate I was just asking for a HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVE TO CHEERIOS...but...
ON MY BOX OF MULTI GRAIN CHEERIOS....
INGREDIENTS: whole grain corn, whole grain oats. SUGAR, whole grain barley, whole grain rcie, whole grain wheat, CORN STARCH, BROWN SUGAR SYRUP, corn bran, salt, TRISODIUM PHOSPHATE, canola and/or rice bran oil, DISTILLED MONOGLYCERIDES, COLOR ADDED, vitamin E (mixed ticopheroils) added to preserve freshness...
then it goes on to list the vitamins and minerals: calcium corbonate, zinc and iron (mineral nutrients), vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate), A B vitamin (niacinamide), vitamin c (sodium ascorbate), A B vitamin (calcium pnatothenate), vitamin b6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin b2 (roboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamin mononitrate) A B vitamin (folics acid), viatmin A (palmitate), vitamin B12, vitamin D.

Why the eye roll ?
I just asked which/what ingredient list you were referring too, cause MY REG cheerios didn't list these ingredients and neither does the honey nut, but fruity cheerios do have the trisodium phosphate.
That's all. There's no debate.
To each is own.

Re: Is there a good low or no sugar alternative to Cheerios?
You want a healthier alternative to cheerios then try fruits & veggies. Honestly I've only used cheerios as a way to preoccupy DD when we're out in public or while I'm preparing her a meal. I've never expected it to fulfil her daily requirement of nutrients.

That's the thing. the ones you have have more sugar in them. The regular ones are okay. The OP (as was I) were referring to the REGULAR Cheerio's. NOT the Multigrain.

There has been controversy fro yrs over Cheerios and the phospate issue..this is nothing new.

No one said dont eat cherrios, just that WE choose not to.

I think they have more sugar now than years ago. I used to buy them for DS when he was younger and they tasted so blah and now they actually taste sweet.

let me explain my thinking :) see i think this is where i got < i can see where Diane got confused too. Cause it went from low sugar alternative, to cheerios being bad for us.
She asked for a lower sugar alternative to Multigrain cheerios, multigrain cheerios are coated with sweetness. Everyone was telling her Reg Cheerios are low in sugar. That's the 6 gram vs 1 gram sugar thing
Then the ingredient lists were thrown in, and I have 3 boxes of cheerios in my cabinet and went i looked on 2 of the 3 boxes, especially the regular cheerios box, the ingredients posted about the reg cheerios didn't match.
And the eyeroll got me cause, i thought it was inappropriate. No one was debating, everyone was just trying to get on the same page. I hate that eyeroll icon, it's so rude. Cause no one on here would roll there eyes in someones face if this conversation were happening IRL.
I hope that explains it.
Donna and you know i respect all other opinions on things and everyone does what's best for their families. But like you, I voice my opinion :)
This is the first i'm hearing about this with cheerios.
