Is this a normal behavior in an almost 17 month old?

DS is responsive to us, he communicates with us and does what is asked of him, but sometimes he just plain ignores us. We could sit there and call his name and he won't budge, he'll look the other way or focus on something else. Now there were times where he looked at me and started to laugh, almost as if he was doing it on purpose. My husband is kind of worried about it, but I'd like to think that this is normal. I also noticed that he does this for example when my husband drops me off at the train station and I'm about to leave and I give him a kiss and wave bye to him, he looks so sad and just ignores me...he also does this to my husband when he drops him off at my moms...I don't know, are we overreacting a bit here?

It sounds normal to me. If he is responding to his name most of the time, and communicating with you guys (showing you what he wants by gestures or words, bringing you toys, joint attention) I woudlnt worry. A LOT of my friends children selectively tune them out, especially when engaged with a toy. If it is constant ignoring and there were communication issues then I'd maybe seek an EI eval, but doesn't seem to be the case with him!

My dd does this!!! It cracks me up.

I go .. i know you hear me... and that usually gets her to crack a smile and look at me. They are soo comical at this age, its like they already understand the concept of sarcasim

Christopher does the same thing. I was worried too. I've asked several people and they all agree it is normal behavior.

VERY normal! Cailen still does this at 22 months. I know when he is ignoring me now, and I make a game of it. I get close to him, and give him a little neck tickle, and he still tries to ignore me but does that little tickle squeal Chat Icon Chat Icon Or, I get really close and nuzzle him in the neck and give him kisses.
