Is this ART?

What do YOU think?

I read this article in the Daily News this morning, and it made me sick ... Chat Icon

Personally, I think its disgusting. I cannot believe that this person could possibly believe that this would be perecieved as "art" - I can only imagine how the families of the victims of 9/11 must feel when they see things like this Chat Icon

Daily News Article

As it says at the bottom of the article: Is the World Trade Center tragedy a fitting topic for this kind of artistic expression?

I believe in artisitc expression of course, but I find this highly offensive and insensitive

Re: Is this ART?

Kerry Skarbakka, who wore a safety harness under his clothes, told the Daily News that Tuesday's stunt was his way of asking questions about what went through the minds of those who jumped from the towers and others who watched helplessly.

If this artist really wanted to know what was going through their minds when they lept to their deaths, he should have jumped WITHOUT the safety harness!!!!!!!! Chat Icon

what a sad example of artistic expression!!!! Chat Icon

I saw this this morning. I have low tolerance for artists who do things for the sake of shock-value. It's not art, it's disgusting and disrespectful.

I agree Lisa ...

Its just that to me, this is being done for SHOCK VALUE and to get his name out there... I cannot remotely see WHAT artistic purpose this serves, HOW anyone can get ANYTHING meanful out of this - the only emotions I felt were disgust, disrespet and anger.

I mean even the fact that his name , picture and article was printed in the newspaper gave him EXPOSURE that he did not deserve

The daily news did not print any pictures of his "art" ... but I'm sure some news media outlet will Chat Icon

And Don - I also agree about freedom of speech, and YES we live in a country where you "supposedly" have the right to express yourself how you want to -

But if we are talking censorship here, don't get me started.. how can they tell a person like Howard Stern that he cannot talk about certain sex acts on the air, BUT its totally ok that an "artist" jump repeatedly out of buildings to visualize and try to "feel" what it felt like for the victims of 9/11?

Re: Is this ART?

Good point about Howard Stern, Flee!
He's certainly offending less people with his language than this jacka$$!!!!

Why doesn't he light himself on fire or jump in front of a train if he wants to know how people felt?

Why doesn't he go spend some time with their families?

I am also for freedom of expresion, but IMO the whole concept was just STUPID and done for publicity. I get sad enough when I think about how all those poor people had to jump to their deaths; I have no interest in seeing how some senseless moron re-creates it.

Re: Is this ART?

flee, good point about stern

i don't listen to him so i dont know what he is allowed to do or not do

i flip by the TV show and he always has naked girls on, so i assumed he was still allowed to talk about sex

since that's apparently not the case anymore, you are right, that would be a double standard

someone should tell him to go run blindfolded in traffic and express himself that way..thats ART! Chat Icon

Re: Is this ART?

I don't agree with it, although I do think it could make a powerful statement. I mean, how many people outside of the NY area have already fogotten what happened - instead most people just use it as a point of reference (post 9-11 world, etc.) Maybe, in his own twisted way, his expression can remind those who do not live with it everyday, as we do in here, that people were involved in a tragedy - not just a nation or a government - but actual people.

PLUS, I am emphatically pro-freedom of expression. To me, you don't have to agree, but that does not give us the right to take posession of anyone's thoguhts, ideas...etc...

Re: Is this ART?

My initial brut reaction is that it is insensitive.

But then I sat and thought about it for a while...

Reading deeper, I see it's an extention of work he has done before about the jumping... and that was met with critical acclaim...

I don't know- I am bad at judging "art"... but as a historian, I would say art is all about interpreting our society and what has happened to us...

I don't think when he did it- he was coming from a place of mocking.. i think it was coming from a place of trying to understand....?

I guess artists make art as a way of processing the world around them... and this is his way?

it's tough... to see it from both sides... I mean- it's hard for me to sort of see the value in it- but I hope whatever art is done- it makes people never forget.

Re: Is this ART?

I just read the article during my lunch break...

It's not ART at all...It's stupidity is what it is. How the F*ck do you think the people were feeling when they jumped out of the windows.

You f*cking moron, there should have been no safety harness at the bottom for you. that way you could have really known what they felt...you stupid jerk!
