Is this inappropriate?

I'm thin. I'll be the first to admit. I was a former ballerina and I still have a dancers body. My boss just walked in and said "I am going to call you S&B from now on, Skin and Bones..ha..ha". Then he proceeds to tell everyone to call me that. I'm new here, only two weeks and I'm embarassed to speak up. This has been happening all week with him. I don't find it funny at all anymore. I'm getting very upset about it, but I don't know if I'm being overly sensitive. Any thoughts?

Re: Is this inappropriate?

I think that's really rude and could border on hostile environment sexual harassment. it's inappropriate for him to be making comments about your body and even more inappropriate to be spreading it around the office and making it and environment where your body is a topic of conversation.

I think you should definitely bring it up.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

That IS inappropriate. If you don't want to speak to your boss, is there an HR person you can speak with?

Re: Is this inappropriate?

IMO any boss who comments on your body shape/size is bordering on sexual harrassment. I'd feel very uncomfortable with that. Unfortunately, people think its ok to pick on really skinny people - you'd never hear anyone walk up to a colleague and say "I'm going to call you fatty from now on!"

Re: Is this inappropriate?

Totally inappropriate. I would say something. Not in a harsh way. Just let him know that it is not funny to you and that you would prefer if he didn't make comments like that. Good luck honey....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You're not being overly sensitive. It's as in appropriate as if you called him F&P for "Fat & Pudgy"

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes and he just comes back and goes at it again. "Do you ever eat solids?" b/c I'm sitting here drinking coffee, laughs and then walks away.

oh god, he's coming back again...

Re: Is this inappropriate?

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your kind words and reassurance that I am right and he is off base. I think i reached my breaking point with this today. Just stepped outside b/c i refuse to let them see me cry. I'm going to meet up with the HR lady after lunch to see what I can do about this. This is the CFO, geez, you would think he would have some class. I guess not.

It's just as inappropiate as if someone said to an overweight person, hey there Thunder Thighs.....Chat Icon If you feel comfortable you can tell him you prefer he not say things like that to you. If not, speak to your HR rep.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

I'm in HR. If you came to me, I'd suggest you say something on your own first.

Tell HR first, but then say to him:

You can say "I know you think it's funny, but I don't. Please don't call me that again. It's hurtful."

eta. If I have to call him in my office to tell him not to say something it makes for an uncomfortable work situation for the both of you. I'd want to know your complaint in case it's something that has gone on in the past & that he's been warned about. Also I'd want to know if he tried to retaliate against you.

I'm glad you're going to speak out about it. I'm just thinking of how horrible I would feel if someone called me fat at work or saw me eating something sand said "Do you ever stop eating?" I can't imagine how humiliating that must be. He needs to stop!

i am by no means defending the jack off, but i think that he thinks that you must hear it all the time and it must not bother you. know what i mean? like you should be used to it or something.

sorry and i feel your pain
