Re: Is this inappropriate?

Also, in your first post you sound like you're apologizing for being thin. Don't!

Re: Is this inappropriate?

What a jerk. Glad you're going to HR. Remember you have every right to speak up - good luck, hope you're able to nip it in the bud. You are completely right and he is a moron.

If think it's very very rude of him to start joking around that way especially because it's a sensitive subject. JERK! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is this inappropriate?

I would ask to speak with him privately, and then tell him that his comments are unprofessional, offensive and embarrassing since comments were made in front of co-workers.

Also, in my years of supervision, I've learned to keep a journal for yourself of things that happen in the workplace. Documentation is the key!!!

Ex. 9/1 12:30 pm. Spoke w/Mr. X in office re comments. (you could elaborate on what each of you said).

Make a new entry for each incident. If it doesn't stop, tell him you're going to HR to report it. (Note that in your journal as well)

You're a beautiful girl!!! Don't let him get you down.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

I am so sorry you have to go through this. I know what it is like to be in tears because of someone's insensitivity. Whereas I cannot relate to comments on being too thin, I CAN relate on comments about being too heavy. It can and does happen and it is innappropriate as well as hurtful. Having been heavy, I have received comments aboutmy weight from peers as well as those who served above me and iti s just wrong. I think you have every right to report a hostile work environment. I hope it turns out well for you. Keep us posted.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

Very inappropriate. You should tell him it bothers you.

What if you had an eating disorder? (I'm not saying that you do) Is that funny to make fun of someone who might have a problem?. Also alot of women are naturally thin and self-conscience about it. How would he like it if you called him "chubbs" around the office???

Re: Is this inappropriate?

I can very much relate to this as I am also a thin person- I do not have an eating disorder or any reason to be thin other than its the way I was born, Ive always been thin no matter what I eat or how much. That being said Ive gotten some pretty harsh comments about it- Im always called skinny minnie, twig, toothpick and Ive been accused of having a eating disorder more than once. IT really hurts my feelings! The way people say it sounds like its an insult. I know that many people would die to be thin so I guess when people comment they mean it in a positive way or as a compliment Chat Icon it never comes out that way and I often never take it as a compliment. My Dh say that they are just jealous but it still bothers me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, very inappropriate. I would go to HR, no one should be making any kind of comments on your body.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

Totally inappropriate! I am fat and if my boss told everyone to call me "plump and juicy", I would be in tears. I have a mirror, I know I fat! Chat Icon

That is so rude!! It's very inappropriate. In response to his asking if you eat solids, I'd like to ask him if he ever says anything intelligent! You have to say something! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd probably make some comment like "hey, what should I call YOU?"

If he didn't get the hint, then I'd tell HR.

EXACTLY....You should tell him that it makes you extremely uncomfortable. If he continues, I'd go to the HR.

i TOTALLY agree.

although i really do not think i am that skinny, i have heard comments like your boss has made many times. and yes, at work too. although it is rude, i really don't even let it bother me. i honestly don't really care what other people say about my weight. as long as i am happy, that is ALL that matters. but yes, it is totally rude and uncalled for.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

You're not being overly sensitive. That is sexual harrassment and I would bring it to the HR department's attention. It's illegal for him to do that. If you don't have an HR department, I would look for another job. Unfortunately I can tell you from experience that people who make comments like that don't change. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I 100% agree with what was said regarding documenting his comments. I don't 100% agree with talking to him in private. There is no reason for you to as it's not part of your job description to be harrassed. If you talk to him in private, he can always twist what you say around if he's the vindictive type.

Re: Is this inappropriate?

That is really inappropriate. My collegues and I have been working together for 2 years and we make jokes all the time to each other, but we all know each other and know our limits. That is not professional of him to say those things. You're there 2 weeks. I would first talk to him and let him know how that upsets you. Then if he continues to do it, then talk to HR.
