Re: Is this mean? I have not sent it yet.

Sorry ladies. I got really slammed with work for a while.

I sent it Chat Icon No response yet though. He is from NYC (living in Texas now) but he is completely aware of how expensive it is to raise a child in NYC.

Granted, Texas is so cheap in comparison and his son can probably attend public school with no real issues but it's just not like that in NYC.Chat Icon

We're constantly asked "when's the baby coming?"....and now I've started polling those who ask...and they respond with "why else would anyone get married?"

WHOA. IF DH and I were never blessed with children, we would still be a family. Just like you. Id be so mad if I heard that.

I think it's a great answer and I would use it. Just be careful that this isn't a person who will go around saying that he heard that you can't afford to have a child. You never know how people twist things. I got an e-mail like that and just never responded but I wish I did say something.

Chat Icon We cannot afford to have a child in NYC and maintain the lifestyle I'd want. There is no way I could ever be a SAHM with a child in NYC unless we hit lotto.

We have rental property but they are occupied and bring in some income whereas a child right now would be an expense we are not prepared for yet. With the costs of a nanny, then daycare for a toddler and private school tuition we cannot afford to have a child in NYC.

If we move out of NYC I know we would be fine.

lol lol lol lol As soon as you give me $20K or so for prental care, labor and delivery expenses & postnatal care in addition to $30,000 a year for the added expense of a baby and childcare costs in NYC plus $18,000 a year for toddler care expenses for 3 years and then $170K (with inflation likley about $300K) or so for private school tuition from age 5 to 18 years and college tuition of about $120K (with inflation probably $250K).

As soon as your check clears we will throw out all the birth control Chat Icon

My friend and her husband move to Peekskill and have a huge, new construction, gorgeous 4 bedroom home for what I'm almost positive is under $500K. They bought preconstruction and always tried to get us to move up there too. The house across the street from them was up for sale this summer but DH refuses to live that far away from Brooklyn right now.

Oh, I know from our talks on LIW that you are far from poor and you're quite successful (smart, too!!!). I think maybe that's why I said that your friend could twist things. When rumors go around, it sucks, esp. if they aren't even true.

DH and I heard through the rumor mill that we paid cash to buy a house on the beach on Fire Island and that a film crew came along and offered us a ton of money to use the house. The truth--we are tenants in that house and the film crew kicked us out! I hate how people twist things even though I would want that rumor to be true.

I would hope my friend would not spread such rumors but I guess I will hear about it one day if he does twist my e-mail into something else other than my personal commentary on the high cost of living in NYCChat Icon
