Is this normal in daycare?

I looked at a few places this morning, and the one I like best we're on a wait list for....

they said DD will be in the 12-18 month room (she'll be 13mos then) and in that room there are no bottles or pacifiers. DD doesn't use a pacifier, but what if I have trouble weaning her by then? Should I start doing it at like 10 months or something?

I worked at a daycare, I was in the 18-24mos old room and there were no pacifiers or bottles in there. Not even sippy cups. They drank out of regular plastic cups. And used forks to eat. I thought it was a little early, but they were all able to do it.

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

Not sure if it's normal but my daycare doesn't "require" DS to be without a bottle. They said they would help ween DS onto a sippy cup.

ETA: I think it's a little too soon to expect 12 month old to be off a bottle and paci?

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

12 month seems so soon

Seamus is in the 18-36 month room. He was on sippy cups by then. I only started weaning him from bottles at 11 months...

I understand at that age...

but what about 12 months? She said DD will be in the 12-18month room and there are bottles allowed

This was the only thing I thought was strange, but I loved everything else about the daycare...just wasn't sure if this was common and if so, should I start weaning her like now? Chat Icon Chat Icon At 8 months

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

This is what my daycare wants them to do too, but the teachers really help teach them to use a sippy cup and later, drink out of an open cup and feed themselves.

That being said, my DS has had lots of trouble with this, and didn't give up his bottle until he was about 21 months. He gets speech therapy, and as long as I had a note from the doctor, the daycare was and still is very willing to work with me.

From my observation, most of the kids are able to drink from a sippy shortly after they moved up to the 12-18 month room. Chat Icon

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

My daycare has three rooms, infant - 6 weeks to 18 months, toddler - 18 months to 3 years and pre-k - 3 to 5 years. No pacifiers or bottles in the toddler room and they sleep on cots. Regular cups in the pre-k room. The infant room allowed pacifiers and bottles. They held the babies to feed them bottle until 6 months and then put them in high chair to feed them and try to get them to start holding their own bottles.

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

Not sure if bottles are "baned" but DS is moving to the 12 -18 months next Monday and all the kids uses sippy cups. DS is currently using the straw sippy cups and will continue in this room. It took us a weekend to ween DS off the bottle completely. We made sure he was able to use the straw cups and we never gave him the bottle again.

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

When DS transitioned to the 12-18 month room, the teachers really worked with him on using a sippy cup. I sent in bottles for several weeks in case he wouldn't drink from the cup. I also wanted to make sure he was getting enough milk. It took about a month for him to completely give up the bottles.

He still uses a pacifier at naptime.

Re: Is this normal in daycare?

My daycare allows paci's but not bottles when kids get to the early toddler room. If they are still on the bottle, they'll keep them in the infant room longer.

As for the paci-they can keep that forever as far as the daycare is concerned.
