Is this rude?!

We were recently at a friends 3rd birthday party and her mother called me after to say her DD already has the toy we bought her and if she could please have the reciept to return it. I said I'll have to look for it and she asked where I bought it so maybe she can return it anyway. I felt this was rude, I would have maybe regifted or tried to retun it on my own. Do you think this was an inappropriate call? She didnt even say thank you for the gift! Chat Icon

Is this rude?!

We got a few doubles for DS's 1st birthday. I really wanted to call and ask ppl (I tried toys r us, target and buy buy baby who all said it wasn't theirs), but I felt that it was rude and would hurt my guests feelings. If someone called me and asked, I wouldn't think it was rude at all but I am pretty easy going. The fact she didn't say "oh thank you so much but we have it already" is what's rude!

Re: Is this rude?!

Yeah I think it was rude. She should have said something like thank you so much for the present, it just so happens that we already have the same toy, if you still happen to have the receipt so I could exchange it I would really appreciate it. But I am not sure I would even say that....my first option would be to try to exchange it without the receipt myself or regift it.

Not saying thank you for the gift is rude, but I don't see why her asking you for a receipt or where you bought it would be seen as rude. If her daughter has the gift already, why should she miss out on getting something else? If she can't return it herself and has to re-gift it, then her daughter is out a gift. If someone called me and asked for a receipt or where I bought something I wouldn't see it as rude at all. I always try to give gift receipts so this isn't an issue. JMO.

Is this rude?!

It is kinda ballsy to call and ask that. I wouldn't take offense to it either because that's just the way I am and I always try to let people know when I give a gift that if they have it already or don't like it I won't be offended...with that said, I returned a few toys DS got for his birthday and I would never call and ask where it was from. I just tried every store and if I couldn't return it I'll regift it eventually.

Re: Is this rude?!

I think it was rude. I would never do that and have received many doubles as presents. I usually return to a store that takes things back w/out a receipt.

I wouldn't do it, but I don't think I would find it rude if someone asked.

Re: Is this rude?!

This is why I always give a gift receipt. We have been lucky as all our gifts have always had one and we haven't gotten doubles.

I do think it is rude to call someone and ask for a receipt to return their gift. I don't think it would ever cross my mind to even consider doing that.

Quite rude... Even with Family if it didn't fit, we already had, etc, we figure out what to do with it, not bother anyone...

I think it's rude, I would never ask. I would just try to return it at Walmart or Target, or sell it on a local swap group and give my kid the money to buy something else.

Re: Is this rude?!

Yeah, it's rude. She could have gone and tried to get a store credit at targets or toys r us...I feel her approach was a bit tacky. Just my opinion. I just gave 2 gifts as bday presents that I had no receipt for because they were extra gifts my sons received from santa (duplicates of toys they had). They were awesome toys, we just didn't need two so it was the perfect presents to give at their friends bdays. If the mom had called me for the receipt I would have been pretty taken back!!

Re: Is this rude?!

I personally wouldn't do it. But this is why I hate not getting a receipt with gifts. Stores give you such a hard time to return things. The gift then goes unused or donated to toys for tots the following holiday season.

Re: Is this rude?!

I don't find it rude at all. Being friends and receiving this call I would just bought something else with a gift receipt this time and just taken the other gift back. Asking where you got it was just trying to make it easier for you instead of trying to find a receipt. Whenever I give something without a gift receipt I give a heads up to parent to let me know that I would change it in case of duplicate or child didn't like it. Being that she reached out to you and knowing she has the toy already I would just change it.

Yes, we have gotten duplicates and also either re-gift or donate as well! There are many kids in need that would appreciate the gift! And we also have a birthday party almost every other week! Thanks for the thoughts ladies.

Re: Is this rude?!

Definitely rude.

You can probably return it without a receipt at major stores if it is a mainstream gift. If it isn't, it may have been bought on clearance, discontinued or been regifted, which is probably why you can't return it at a normal store.

Re: Is this rude?!

I think her delivery was a bit off, but her general message was okay.

Stores nowadays SUCK if you try to return something without a receipt. You get a fraction of its value.

I probably wouldn't ask because I don't want to offend anyone, but I wouldn't be offended if someone asked me. Better for the child to get something they will use. It can be hard to return stuff without a receipt.
