Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

I work about 15 miles from my house. Im not sure which to look into. At first, I was going to look by my house, but now I may search by work.

I was just curious where others have their children during the day.

Thanks.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

Speaking on behalf of many of my co-workers (where the commute to work is 25 miles)....and we work in the boonies....they have their childcare in the same town as our job.

The reason that they have chosen to do it that way is god forbid something were to happen to their child, they don't want to have to say, "I'll be there in 45 minutes." Makes sense. Also when they aren't working, their child isn't in daycare so for it to be located near home isn't much of a help to them.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

DD goes to my MIL's, not daycare, but that's closer to work than home (but on the way to DH's work so he drops her off).

My daycare is close to home, my husband and I share pickup/dropoff duties, and its needs to be close to the motorway for both of us. Also, if I am not working, or I am sick, I don't want to drive all the way to work to drop my son off.

If something was to happen, I trust my daycare enough to leave it that 25 minutes that it would take me to get there, they know what to do in an emergency. Probably, they are better prepared for an emergency.

Ours is near home. Both me and my DH work about 30 miles west of our home but I am an attorney and usually head east to Court before I go in the office plus our emergency contacts are very close to home in case of an emergency.

Close to home.
I drop DS off and DH picks him up, so to be closer to my job doesn't make sense for us.
DH works in the city and I'm on LI about 25 minutes away, so it works for us..

A block away from my house - about 15 minute train ride from work.

Ours is close to home. Dh will drop DS off and I will pick him up. I am about 20 minutes away and DH is about 30.

The reason I started to lean towards near work is that DS would be with me for the 45 minute commute both ways instead of me paying for someone during that time.

I guess I am going to look into both and see what happens.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

Right now daycare is about 8 miles from work
I like it that way because if something happens, I can get there

Starting in Jan, daycare will be down the block, so I could run there if I wanted! lol

Home.

I work an hour and 15 minutes away and am dependent on train schedules. I wanted them closer to home so they would meet friends from their area and I could meet moms too.

As working mom, I can tell you it's hard to find time to socialize and many friendships are formed via daycare-preschool. When the party invites start rolling in, I would think many wish they choose closer to home.

They are closer to my pediatrician and in an emergency my mom can help out. The other thing is there is no emergency in which my being around the corner is necessary or would change the course of events. Even picking up a sick child, my daycares always understood I would try to get someone to pick up right away or I'd be on the next train out.

Also, if I am not working, or I am sick, I don't want to drive all the way to work to drop my son off.

This is a really good point. I never even considered it!

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

When DS was in daycare we were in the same dilema. Close to home or my work.

In the end, we decided close to home.

I was most likely to change job (which I did!) than move out of my house.

It was easier for DH to be my backup.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

my DH and i work in the city and it's about 45 mins. away from home. DS's daycare is around the block from home, and closer to our emergency contacts. i am comfortable because there is a good hospital literally across the street. we've already had 2 episodes where we've had to come home early d/t health issues. one time they sent DS to the emergency room, and the daycare director went with him, while our emergency contact met them there. i couldn't see bringing DS all the way to the city for daycare. i have to be at work at 7 am and my DH takes the train.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

I depends on who is doing the dropoff/pickup. If you work in different directions and you are splitting the duties than it probably makes sense to have it near your home.

We work in the same building so we have it near work. We like commuting together, being able to get to her very quickly and the fact that we can pop over any time to visit her for lunch, etc.

I chose one near home because I work in the city. There's a daycare in my building at work which would have been ideal, but it's not worth taking DS back and forth on the LIRR.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

I have had daycare both near work & near my house. They are both equal IMO as far as convenience. The one that is now by my house we will continue to use even if we move closer to where we work b/c the program is exactly what we need for DS. Chat Icon

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

AT first DS was in a day care right by my job, I loved this because, I could pick him up and run errands, PLUS, it was an extra few minutes each day that I got to be with him. We switched to a day care closer to home, because we were looking for better care, and that is where we found it. This works out better for us, because 2x a week DH has to pick up DS. also grandma has picked him up for us before too. I do hate that I am rushing to get there after work, and that instead of having him in my car by 5:15, it more like 5:45. pros and cons for all of it, you just have to figure out what works best for you.

It is closer to home than work, though it is en route to work. (Look at me with my fancy FRENCH talking!)Chat Icon

It is very close to where my sister lives in the event I can't get there or if there is an emergency, she or my BIL can help out.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

Its near our home. I picked it to be near our home just in case I ever switched jobs (which I have since DD was born). That way it would still be convenient for us!

A few miles from home - I drop him, and DH picked him up.

I work in Manhattan - DH in Queens.

Re: Is your daycare/childcare near home or work?

DD's nursery school is about 8 to 10 minutes from our house, and my job is about 15 minutes from her school.

Her aunt picks her up from school and takes her back to her house, which is about 2 miles from my job. So its all pretty close.

Near work.

I wanted to spend as much time as possible with DS - even if that meant being in the car. I know that I make stops on the way home from work and I want him to be with me as much as possible.

It's near the train station - that way it was convenient for both of us. I don't work in NYC anymore, but it's around 10, 15 minutes away from my house.

Normally it "SHOULD" be the same distance - around 30 minutes but given DC rush hour, it takes me sometimes up to an hour on some nights to go pick up DS and then another 1/2 hour from there to get home. Makes for very early mornings and late nights Chat Icon
