Italy?
Has anyone taken a tour of Italy? I am looking to plan a trip for next summer and would like any information/suggestions from people who have been there before.
We have never been to Italy, and the reason I am considering a tour is because there are so many things to see, I want to do as much as possible.

I never did a formal tour, but I'd say it would take more than 1 trip to see all of the big ticket spots in Italy. It would probably take 3 trips to comfortably see all the good stuff (unless you want to sight see for a month)
My favorites were Venice (in the north), Rome (mid/south) and Capri (in the south).
If you went to Northern Italy, you could do Milan, Venice, Florence.

I just came back from a Mediterranean cruise on Friday. We started off in Rome and we spent a day there before the cruise. In Italy we also stopped in Naples and Florence. The cruise ended in Venice and we spent an extra day there also.
I didn't want to do a "tour" because of all the time spent on busses. We liked the cruise because it moved us from place to place at night while we were sleeping so there was no daytime wasted travelling. Some people like the bus travelling to see other sites on the way, so I guess it is whatever you prefer.
We saw Venice and Rome on our own and it was fairly simple to do. In Naples and Florence we did ship tours to Pisa and Pompeii. We were going to do Pompeii and Capri, but we were so wiped out... I agree with Suven.. to see everything will be a Looooong trip because it is very tiring.
On our cruise we also we to 5 stops in Greece, a stop in Turkey, and a stop in Monaco.

DH and I took a Mediterranean Cruise for our HM. I agree with what Julz said above. That's exactly why we chose to do this.
Our cruise was 12 nights. We started and ended in Barcelona and went to: Villefrance, Firenze, Rome, Naple (Sorrento and Pompeii), Venice, Corfu (Greece) and Dubrovnik (Croatia). The cruise line was Royal Carribean.
