It's funny how we all look at things differently
We had a dinner upstate with DH's grandparents. One of the foods out for 'picking' was pepperoni. DH ripped a piece off and handed it to DS for a taste.
My first thought was: 'I better keep an eye on him. The skin on that is thick and I don't want him to choke if he can't chew through it.'
MIL saw it and said 'Oh, I don't think that's a good idea. It's too spicy for him!'
MIL's husband looked over and said 'That's not a good idea with all the crap they put in pepperoni. It's not healthy.'
DH just shrugged his shoulders and said 'I just wanted to see if he'd eat it.'
4 adults, 4 different points of view.

At least they are all thinking. I would say no, and I would get 3 "Why nots" in that situation
Actually, DH does think, more my parents and that side of the family...

Your husband sounds like he reacted brilliantly, not too sensitive, not being offended. I would have said the same thing, but I know many other people would be offended by the fact that they all gave their opinions (or put in their 2 cents!)
Well done to the hubby! Did the kid like the pepperoni?

He ate it, but he wasn't looking for another piece. He's not too fond of meats.
