"It's just a dog. You can get another one."

I'm watching the morning news. A man trying to save his dog's life was pulled over & detained for 20 minutes. The man hysterically tells the officer why he was speeding. The officer then tells the man he needs to calm down & then says, "It's just a dog. You can get another one."

He took 20 minutes to write a speeding ticket. Missy the poodle did not make it.Chat Icon

Re: "It's just a dog. You can get another one."

Granted, the guy was speeding (I think it was 100 MPH, so it was excessive) and he was on the phone with the vet, so I am by no means saying he was innocent, but the cop was clearly wasting time, and that comment put me over the edge.Chat Icon

Honestly, I am a pet owner of three dogs, several turtles, a Bearded dragon and a multitude of fish, however, the fact that he was going 100MPH could have jeopardized much more than his dogs life. Granted the cop was a jerk, and I would drive swiftly to save the life of any of my pets...but this guy should have been more careful when he was driving. JMHO

I would have drove away, and faced the consequences later. Stupid arse. That poor poor man and his poor poor baby poodle.

I agree his speed was excessive, but the dog was choking (they did not say on what) and when he tried to explain to the cop he was VERY insensitive & kept telling him to relax, its only a dog. 20 minutes to write a speeding ticket is ridiculos.

Jail time or perhaps killing another family while driving at a fast speed...that seems like a pretty heavy consequence.

I didn't say I would have driven off at 100 miles per hour. But I would go to jail if it meant I would save any of my pets' lives (and no I would not endanger the lives of others by driving 100 mph).

When Molly was dying we tried to get her to the vet in time, and I would almost guarantee we were going over the speed limit. When your pet who has your whole heart is dying and suffering and in pain, your first instinct is to do anyting in your power to stop that. Obviously, I am very sympathetic since I know how your heart feels when you are hoping you make it in time, and praying your pet holds on.

I am hysterical crying at my desk right now. The stupid Arse cop. I would have seriously drove off or not even stopped til i recahed the vet's office. I would have faced whatever came at me later. But my dogs lives are littla more important than some dumb Arse cop and the consequences i would face

I saw that and told DH< I don't care if I got arrested, I would have kept going. That officer deserves a LOT worse than what he got...just a slap on the wrist. I was crying when I heard this story and saw the video cam of the poor man pleading to be let go.

I think I hear a LAWSUIT coming, and I hope that I do and that the couple wins.

If you see the video, you may feel differently based on the way the cop was acting and how he wasted time b/c he could care less that this man loved his dog like a child.

The video shows it all. The cop could have driven fast to have the man follow him when he saw the dying dog in the car, if he had a HEART.

The man also said there was barely any traffic and he felt he clearly could go that fast without risking anyone's lives. Plus, if you have ever driven around 80mph, even on the LIE a few times we didn't even realize while keeping up with the flow of cars that we were going close to 80 b/c that's what all the cars around were driving at. While in your car, 80mph doesn't seem half as fast as it sounds.

The reality is the cop could have taken the dog for him to speed to the vet, if he really had a heart .

Re: "It's just a dog. You can get another one."

I can see both sides of the issue (the cop being a jerk and the man speeding could endanger more lives) - but the cop's careless words were extremely unnecessary and callous

If it were me, I would've been somewhat calm trying to explain the situation, but once the cop said that I would've gone beserk!

Re: "It's just a dog. You can get another one."

100 mph is way too fast but the cop should have helped not hurt the situation for the dog. I'm so glad that my vet is close to home, and there is also an emergency hospital nearby. I wish we could call ambulances for pets. When I thought Oscar had a seizure or heatstroke, I was too upset to drive and I froze up. I was lucky to have had help and lucky it turned out okay. I handled it differently, but I would have freaked if anyone said, "its just a dog," even about my nasty wiener *******!!!!

Re: "It's just a dog. You can get another one."

Just about a month ago I had to rush my cocker spaniel to the vet at 6am in the morning because another dog bit her and her eye popped out of the socket. I was speeding (probably 60 in a 45) and I also blew a red light (after stopping at the intersection to make sure it was clear). I wouldn't have stopped if a cop was behind me and pulled me over. I would have dialed 911, and told the 911 operator that I was being followed, where I was, and that I was going to the emergency vet, and once I got there I would face the cop.

I watched the video, he had hazards on, he was on a highway, am I excusing how fast he was going, no, but I understand it. I hit 80 going to work on the highway out here in the morning, so 100 isn't surprising.

Also, its Texas, bigger, wider roads. Its not like the LIE or the Northern State. I'm guessing the speed limit was 65 anyway, I know it is out here in Vegas.
