It's Official
I went today and met with the asst Supt and filled out my new hire form.
I have to go back after the 14th, since that is when the board meeting is and I have to get voted on? Is that common? I don't know anything about this process.
Then I start new teacher orientation on the 29th.
Now they started me at 51,801 with a master's at step 1. Does that mean they gave me the 1 year credit I taught in florida? Is that a good or bad salary comparable to the rest of LI?
(Edited to fix assistant...they thought it was a$$)

Re: It's Official
Salary sounds about right, and if they have an entry level step and started you on step 1 then they gave you credit for the year you taught - some districts do, some don't. As far as the board goes, it's really just a formality - our board has to approve everything. Congrats! How exciting!!!!

Re: It's Official
Congrats again! Like others said the board approval is just a formality. As for the salary, they started you at Step 1 which means they didn't give you credit for the year in Florida. But that salary seems pretty average for Suffolk.

Re: It's Official
the salary sounds good. I don't think they gave you credit for the year in FL, because Step 1 is the lowest you can go. If they gave you credit, you would be starting Year 2, so Step 2.

Re: It's Official
Congratulations. Welcome to LI. It's a great place to teach. It's standard procedure for board approval before anything else can happen. When you are up for tenure, there will also be board approval for that. You may want to think about waiting to give notice to the BOE until you are officially (board approval) hired. It just will give you a bit of security in case something happens. (Not like it ever does, but you want to be sure you have a job in September.) Anyhow, congratulations!

Re: It's Official
That is so great! The Board needs to approve the hire, but like the others said it is more a formality.
Step 1 would be the beginning, so you would not be getting credit for the other year.

Re: It's Official
The salary sounds right for Suffolk - and they did not give you any credit for Florida because Step 1 is the lowest step - most districts will not give credit unless it was several years
Best of luck!!!

Re: It's Official
That is wonderful. Congratulations! My district starts about $40K without a master's, so you are doing well. Step 1 means that this is counted as your first year of teaching.

Re: It's Official
On the new hire form he filled out, why would he ask me if I had prior experience and fill in 1 year if it didn't matter? Would it only matter if I had a bunch of years?

Re: It's Official
could just be a FL/NY thing. Maybe it has to be in-state for them to give you credit?
ETA: Also, many districts will shave off years when you move. For example, you may have 7 years, but they will only credit you for 5.

It depends on their budget... a lot of people come from private schools or the baord of ed. with tons of years and they just can't afford to put you on the right step, so sometimes they tell you they'll give you some credit or not all.
they often do this with private schools because the standards are so different and sometimes people were not even certified when teaching in a private school.
when i was hired at my district full-time, i had 2 full years of teaching experience. one did not count because it was out of state and private. they counted my one year in NYC schools. I started on Masters, Step 2.

Re: It's Official
It is up to the school/board as far as what if anything they grant you when you are hired. It does not necessarily need to be a *bunch* of years.
