It's official...Bailey needs surgery
She does have a cruciate rupture.... and because it's degenerative, chances of it happening in her other knee are pretty good.
Where am I going to find $1200?
We could opt to not have it and treat her with anti inflammatory drugs and fish oil and see what happens.....
decisions, decisions
but thank goodness it's nothing more serious!

Can you possibly pay in installments if you had to? I know there is a veterinarian school in Massachusetts that also takes in animals to treat...Is it possible there is something like that our where you live?
Thank God it was not something worse!!
Is Bailey home now?

I'm sorry to hear that...but there is a Care Credit Company that you can apply for a card from and pay off the surgery...We opened an account for Misty and we just had to use it again for Espresso.

Re: It's official...Bailey needs surgery
Lucky had a luxating platella, he could not walk on his back leg and he would cry if he did step on it. My vet gave us anti inflamitories, and pain killers and now he is fine. if it did not work he would need surgery which was about 3000.00. so we opted for pain killers first. Now he can run walk jump everything on his back leg.
Hope bailey feels better soon

Defiinitely go the anti-imflammatory route FIRST, see if she improves because you never know. And while she's doing that therapy, sock a little money away (even a just a tiny bit a day/week) so you'll have some $$$ to put down if the vet is willing to work with you on payments if it ends up she *has* to have the surgery.

Re: It's official...Bailey needs surgery
My lab tore his cruciate ligament in both back legs. We tried the anti-inflammatories but the results were not good....please make sure you do not put him on rimadyl. This particular NSAID is very bad for dogs. We went the surgery route on one leg....cost us over 3000 and the vet said to see how the other leg does. He is now limping on the other one but we have him on holistic medicine and that seems to be helping.
Good luck

Re: It's official...Bailey needs surgery
So sorry to hear about your dog. When Bella was a few months old she fell up my parents deck stairs in NY and they thought she tore her cruitiate lig. and we were told our only option was surgery. We took her to our vet in NY and he was apprehensive about doing surgery on a dog so young so she was on pain meds for over a month and strict cage rest. Well after a few weeks she was walking again, and after two months she was fine. Apparently it was a bad sprain or a partial tear that mending itself. but if we stayed in NY they would have made us do the surgery for $$$$ I would try the meds first and see what happens. Good luck

Re: It's official...Bailey needs surgery
TG we had pet insurance when our girl had her surgery-they covered 70% of it. Be careful if they put the dog on Rimadyl, which in most cases is the first anti inflammatory they go for. It has some serious side effects and should not be used long term. Hugs to Bailey

Re: It's official...Bailey needs surgery
Rimadyl is ok to give the dog for the short term-NOT for the long term at all. The side affects are horrible but it is almost necessary. See if there is something that they can give in place of that. If not then just make sure that you tell the Vet you know there can be bad side affects and do NOT want the dog on it too long. We gave it to out pit before and after her surgery and she was fine but was not on it for a long amount of time.
