IVF - Work

What did everyone tell their jobs about their IVF process? Did anyone not feel comfortable telling them all the details and kept it some what vague?

From what it seems the two weeks monitoring early in the morning won't be a problem for me and work.. but I think they only problems will be the retrieval and transfer, where I will need to take off and stay off my feet for a few days (do I have this right guys).. Let me know how it worked or is working for you Chat Icon

Thank you girls.. sending Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to everyone!

Re: IVF - Work

I've been thinking about this lately since we are going to do our first (and hopefully only) IVF cycle in the new year. I've been going back and forth about it, but I'm fairly close to my boss so I think in the end, I'll end up having a discussion with him about it.

Re: IVF - Work

I changed my name to protect my identity Chat Icon but I thought that my experiences with IVF may be helpful.

Our issue was strictly MF and we tried one IUI naturally (no meds no injections) before quickly moving on to IVF.

We got pregnant on our first try - we put back 2 day 3 embyros both good quality and I am pregnant now with a singleton Chat Icon

NO ONE knows that we were doing anything (except immediate family) and as far as work is concerned - they have not a clue - I personally think it is much better that way.

The morning visits are very easy to accomplish and get to work on time - but it depends on your office's hours - mine were very accomodating...

The only day I took off was the actual day of Transfer, my retrieval fell on a weekend - but I really didn't feel it was necessary to take any other time off - but that is up to you - they recommended maybe the day after transfer - but I was feeling great and thought I would make myself crazy at home.

The most important part of the whole process is to STAY POSITIVE - I really didn't get bogged down in symptoms of this and that - and to be honest the procedure from start to finish - although time consuming was not bad at all!!!!

Any questions feel free to askChat Icon

Re: IVF - Work

I told my boss and only my boss. I asked him to keep it private which he did. I only told him because I didn't want him to think I was taking advantage since I was coming in late when I had my morning monitoring. If you have time and you will not be coming in late I don't see why you would have to say anything. Good Luck!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I told my boss two months ago that DH and I were TTC but that it looked like a we needed a doctor to help and that several monrings I would be late and would take a shortened lunch. He was more than ok with this and quite honestly hasnt asked any questions about it (TMI for him I guess). If IVF becomes necessary for us, I am certain I'll let him know.

Re: IVF - Work

I told my boss, anyway. I just thought it was easier to tell him what I'm doing than to keep making up stuff.

I took off 1 day for retrieval and one day for transfer. I went back to work the day after transfer.

Do you do anything strenous at work? Are you sitting? If so, you can definitely return to work.

Re: IVF - Work

I told my boss everything when we decided to do IVF. I did not want to stress about being late to work. Also my retrieval and transfer was during our busiest time at work when I generally would not be able to take personal time.

My boss was great about. I feel very comfortable with him so I did share info during the process.

Re: IVF - Work

My boss is the office gossip and I did not feel comfortable telling him about our situation.

I told him that I had a medical condition that I was receiving treatment for. I assured him that it was not life-threatening but that I wasn't sure how long the treatment would last. He was fine with my explanation.

Re: IVF - Work

I'm glad someone asked this question, because this is exactly what I've been dealing with these past few days...

I'm not doing IVF, but I AM starting Clomid/Metformin together, so I'll need to be monitored on CD3 for bloodwork, CD11 for sono, and I'll need to go on CD 16 for the trigger shot.

I'm a teacher, so I get to work at 7, and don't get out until 2:30. They only do the bloodwork between 1-3, and the sonos only between 7:30 and 8:30.

I guess I don't have any choice but to tell my principal--but I have a very inflexible job, where I'm responsible for 21 students, and can't just slip out whenever I need to. Chat Icon

I told my boss the truth...with taking time off it just wasn't worth it to try to hide anything.

This is my same exact problem. I think this is a great idea.

Re: IVF - Work

When I was going through ivf, I did not tell my employer anything. I took the necessary time off for the retrieval and transfer. I didn't feel as if it were any of their business why I was taking off.

I have to say that for some this is a very long, emotional process. I do not thinkI would want my boss to know just in case it was not quick.

Re: IVF - Work

i have a unique job in that i have several different people i report to, I ended up speaking to three of them about it, and explaining it. It definitely helped with all of the appointments i had, and they're understanding.

In a perfect world, I would have told no one.
