IVF Diary - Update 6/3 - Beta #2

Since I found Carolyn's diary so helpful, I decided to copy her and start my own as I start the next phase of my "journey". So, now everyone can read about the good, the bad, and the ugly!

As for my background, I am 28 (almost 29!) and DH is 32. We started TTC in the fall of 2007. I had a "gut" feeling that something was not right and I first saw my RE (Dr. Flisser at RMA of NY) in July 2008. I truly believe that the sooner you see the RE the better and I am very happy that I did not wait a full year! They initiallly found a uterine polyp and I had surgery to remove it. While they considered us to be dealing with "unexplained IF", my FSH is slightly elevated (but within normal range) and it is suspected that I have egg quality issues (my m/c was caused by an egg issue).

I did 3 clomid/IUI cycles that were all unsucessful. I then did 2 injectable/IUI cycles. My last injectable/IUI ended in a m/c Chat Icon As many of you knew, there was a whole D&C debacle and I was in limbo for a few weeks. My m/c was the saddest I have ever felt probably in my life and while I don't think I will ever be 100% over it, I definitely feel back to "normal".

AF came on Sunday and it was a HUGE relief. I felt like I could finally move on and get back to TTC. Anyway, this is my first cycle since my m/c so I am especially nervous!

Today I went in for CD3 bloodwork and everything looks fine. I spoke with the IVF coordinator and we went over what would be going on for the next couple of weeks. We are going on Thursday for the IVF class and we need to get more bloodwork done. I also may need a saline sonogram, though I am hoping that my HSG from last August will suffice!

I start BCPs tonight and will be on them for 3 weeks. The last week I will be overlapping with Lupron. After I get my Lupron AF, I will start stimming with Gonal-F (which I took for my injectable cycles).

So, things will probably be kind of slow for the next few weeks with no "exciting" updates, but I'll keep everyone posted Chat Icon

Update 4/16/09: DH and I went today to have a lot of bloodwork done and I had a saline sonogram. He just wanted make sure everything was clear after the D&C. Fortunately, everything looks good!

We then went to the IVF class - which definitely was helpful. They showed a video of what happens at the lab during IVF and I really found it to be interesting.

We filled out a bunch of consent forms and it was definitely weird having to decide what we wanted to do with the embryos in the case of death of divorce Chat Icon

I also found out today that Menopur was added to my protocol.

And, we received great news today - ALL of my medications will be covered by insurance Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So, while not that exciting of an update, it feels great to move forward!

Update 4/28/09: Nothing too exciting but I went for bloodwork today and all looks good so I start Lupron tonight! I am really hoping that the side effects are not too bad Chat Icon

Update 5/6/09: My last day of BCP was Monday, but I started spotting over the weekend. I spoke with the IVF coordinator yesterday and she thought my Lupron AF started. I went in for bloodwork and u/s today and everything looks good. I am going to start stimming on Friday Chat Icon Chat Icon

They also have reduced my Lupron dose which I am relieved about. I haven't had terrible side effects, but I have felt really "off" while on it. The only other side was effect was when I was out on Friday night - I had TERRIBLE hot flashes Chat Icon Fortunately, everyone I was with was drinking so I don't think they noticed how uncomfortable I was!

Update 5/11/09: Today is Day 4 of stimming. I went in for b/w and u/s this morning and I have 4 follicles on my right side measuring 10-11 mm and 5 follicles on my left side measuring 10-11 mm and another 1 measuring 13 mm. My estrogen has increased (forgot to ask the number) so they are cutting my dose of Gonal-F to 75. I will continue on the same dose of Menopur and Lupron. I was told everything looks good and my response is average, so we will see what happens!

So far I am feeling ok. I am definitely bloated, but its no different from when I did my injectable/IUI cycles. My moodiness is another story Chat Icon I still feel "off" and not like my usual self, but I know that I won't be on the medication for much longer.

The only other "issue" I have had is that the Menopur injection has been really painful for me. I have no idea why because I have had no issues with the Gonal-F and Lupron injections. I made sure that I was using the right needle, but for whatever reason, it really hurts! Oh well, the pain is temporary!

Update 5/13/09: Today is Day 6 of stimming and I am very bloated and can really feel my ovaries Chat Icon

I went in for b/w and u/s and everything looks good. I felt kind of rushed this morning and didn't get a full count, but I know that most of my follicles were about 12-13 mm and 1 was 15 mm. However, the doctor did mention that there were a few "small" ones. I am not sure if these were part of the original 10 from 2 days ago or different ones. I missed the nurse's call but the message said that things were progressing like they are supposed to and to continue with the same doses that I currently am on.

I am going back again on Friday for b/w and u/s.

I feel like this process has been going on forever and I finally feel like I am getting into the homestretch. My retrieval likely will be early next week!

Of course, I have a nagging fear that none of my eggs are going to fertilize or there are going to be no good embryos to transfer, but I keep telling myself that I can't worry about things that may not and have not happened! And, it only takes 1 good one!

Update 5/15/09: I went in for b/w and u/s this morning and I have 7 follicles measuring around 17 mm and 1 measuring at 19 mm.

I am going back tomorrow morning, but it looks like I will be triggering tomorrow night for a Monday retrieval Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Update 5/17/09: I triggered last night at 10:30 PM and I am all set for retrieval on Monday at 10:30 AM Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I went in for my last monitoring appointment this morning and it looks like I have 9 -10 follicles Chat Icon

I'll update tomorrow after the retrieval!!

Update 5/18/09: I am back from retrieval. Overall, I feel fine, but they only were able to get 5 eggs Chat Icon

I definitely am disappointed, but I keep telling myself that it only takes 1 good one. I asked the nurse about what happened to the other 4-5 follicles and she said that there were no eggs in them Chat Icon I don't really understand what it means and I am putting a call into my doctor today to discuss.

Anyway, I am doing my best to remain positive and Chat Icon that I get a good fertilization report tomorrow.

ETA: I spoke with my doctor today (he didn't do the retrieval) and he said they were hoping to get more eggs. He thinks, but cannot be positive, that some of the follicles were too immature and that is why not all of the follicles released an egg when I triggered Chat Icon However, the follicles were measuring the right size and my estrogen levels indicated that I was ready to trigger on Saturday. We also should have a better idea tomorrow about what happened.

I feel like this is so typical of me - nothing ever goes how it is "supposed" to go!

Update 5/19/09: The fertilization report is in and 4 out of 5 fertilized Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have been a nervous wreck since yesterday, and I feel a lot better since getting that call.

Now I am just Chat Icon that they all continue to grow. They will call me on Thursday morning and let me know if we are doing a 3 day or 5 day transfer.

Thanks so much for everyone's kind words and support Chat Icon It is has been a huge sense of relief knowing that I have all of this support on this board!

I will update everyone on Thursday!!!!

Update 5/21/09: It's go time! My transfer is going to be at 1:20 today Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Wish me luck!

I will update everyone when I get back Chat Icon

UPDATE: I am back from my transfer and it went well!! We transferred two perfect 8 cell embryos Chat Icon

We originally had 4 embryos, but one did not make it to today because it was too multi-nucleated. The other embryo is 6 celled and had fragmentation. They are going to watch it to see if it makes it to freeze, but it likely will not.

So now the wait begins Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Update 5/28/09: Just wanted to give everyone an update! My beta is scheduled for Monday, but I was planning on testing this weekend.

Well, I couldn't wait and against all better judgment, I tested this morning (7dp3dt) and lo and behold I got a BFP Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The line definitely was faint, but I expected that since it is so early.

It's a very strange feeling because on one hand I am sooooooooooo happy, but on the other hand, I am terrified of having another m/c Chat Icon Of course I am worried that I am going to take another test tomorrow morning and it is going nto be a BFN or not be darker. I just am doing my best to remain positive and accepting that I do not have any control over this!

If you have any extra prayers or good thought, please pray that my little baby(ies?!?!?!) stick and continue to grow

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I spoke with a nurse and I am still going for my first beta on Monday. I'll keep everyone updated, though Monday seems like a long time away!!! Chat Icon

Update 6/1/09: My doctor just called with my beta...201 Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I go back on Wednesday - lots of Chat Icon Chat Icon that it doubles!!

Update 6/3/09: Beta is up to 457 so it more than doubled Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really want to thank everyone again for all of their kind words and support during this process Chat Icon I do not know what I would done through my whole IF journey without all of you ladies Chat Icon I am still nervous, but I have a good feeling about this pregnancy.

I am going to stop updating this thread, but I am not leaving the IF board! I have learned so much from this process and everyone on here, that I want to continue to support everyone on this board. I also will continue to Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that everyone here gets their BFPs Chat Icon

Very cool! We're going to be very close in the IVF process together. We have the consult tomorrow but I have been on BCP for a week already, since CD3. I don't have details yet but think I'll have a better idea after tomorrow! Let's hope we both have a happy ending to it all!

You will be fine on Lupron! I was terrified to take it but it turned out ok. You are moving right along - did they give you a tentative retrieval date yet?
