Jerk neighbor was 'robbed' last night, had his gun stolen -- I'm worried as hell....sorry so long! - updated at bottom
Do you have guns? Do you know/care if your neighbors do?
We don't. But apparently my neighbors do and boy do I care.
One of my neighbors (young guy, maybe 22, lives with his dad who just had a stroke. They've been there for as long as DH and I have been here (6 yrs). We've suspected they've been selling drugs and/or 'other things' for years and I've personally have called the cops on his friends MANY times for fights, scuffles, car accidents, assaults on their girlfriends, etc. Sorry, but if I hear a teen girl crying in front of my house I'm calling 911...I don't care if she's got PMS, I don't know she's not being attacked!
So today this kid comes to me (and another neighbor)to tell me he was robbed last night, or so he thinks. The kid was visibly SHAKING when he's asking us if we saw anything. Tells us that they broke into HIS bedroom while his father was home and while their very scary pit bull was in the living room.
Then tells us that they stole his rifle, which was locked up. I ask him why he has a rifle, he says don't worry, it's licensed because he hunts (BS) and that he uses it for shark fishing (no idea what that means). My other neighbor asks what kind of rifle it is, and the kid says, "ASSAULT RIFLE, AK - SOMETHING" My other neighbor's jaw dropped and she walked away. My stomach flops and my heart starts racing as I look at the 7 mo old I'm holding in my arms and my 2 year old running around our cul-de-sac.
My drug-dealing dirtbag neighbor just had his assault rifle stolen and realizes it's one of his dirtbag friends who stole it. I'm picturing a shoot out in my tiny block (no joke - there are six houses on my tiny street, none of us own more than a tenth of an acre).
I asked what the police said when he called them upon realizing it's missing and he says, "I need to call them to tell them." He obviously won't call 911 to report the break in because he doesn't want them to search the house to find what ELSE is missing.
I've contacted Suffolk's public safety commision, my county legislator Eddington, who is the chair of that committee, plus our town supervisor and our state senator (both of whom live in our town)....I have the narcotics' detective's desk # in my cell phone, and they all say they'll keep an eye on the house....why can't they get a freaking search warrant and bust them? WHAT WILL IT TAKE BEFORE THEY ACT? Will my two babies see the terrible things that I predict will happen? WHAT CAN I DO???

Ugh...that's terrible. I don't know what else you can do personally it sounds like you did what you can do so far. Keep an eye on them and keep your kiddies close to home. Also if everyone lives as close as you're saying I'd probably inform the other neighboors too, maybe the create a neighborhood watch of sorts.

I agree with the pervious poster.
There really is nothing more that you can do.
The police need evidence to arrest someone, they can't just go on that you suspect them of dealing drugs.
Hang in there.

unfortunately I think you have done all you can a the moment.
I have been in close contact with the polce due to a drug issue in my neighborhood and the officers keep telling me the same thing.....call 911 when you see anything. Even if it isn't an "emergency". The more you call the more that this location gets put on the hot spot.
So just keep calling.
The police can't get a search warrant without probable cause and unless they have concrete evidence of drugs and dealing going on in the house they will not be able to get one....it takes a lot to get one and unfortunately your and your neighbors calls isn't enough

Yes, we have a neighborhood watch in place already. That's one of the reasons I like our block so much -- nothing gets past two of my neighbors -- they even know my sons' nap schedules because of when I close the blinds in the afternoons!
But we need the police to come and help us out.
I understand they have a right to have a gun and I believe him when he says it's licensed but I think I'm now clicking WHY this kid had an assault rifle. scary stuff...

Just because it is called an assault rifle doesn't mean it's any worse than any other gun. In fact, most assault rifles are LESS powerful than your average hunting rifle. And just b/c it's an AK-something doesn't mean it is high-powered or worse than an other make of gun.
Obviously, I have NO idea what gun this kid has, but just it being called an "assault rifle" doesn't mean much. It definitely doesn't mean it's a more powerful or worse type of gun than a hunting rifle or shot gun... I wouldn't get hung up on the name.
I DO hope you're able to get the police over there at some point to search the place and take action. I applaud you and your neighbors for being on your toes about a potentially dangerous situation. I hope it's resolved quickly.

I'm sorry but I do NOT agree with the wording on this post. Only call 911 with EMERGENCIES. And the more you call for non-emergencies you may not be put on the police hot spot list, you will be put on the police "pain in the a$$ - the boy who cried wolf list".
This is based upon professional experience.

Unfortunately this happens all the time. My parents live across the street from a drug dealer-it is so OBVIOUS! We have called the police numerous times, there have been incidents there, but nothing ever gets done. Just keep calling and annoying them. It is really amazing how one person can ruin a block.

Do NOT call 911 for this unless there is a reason to! THAT is what causes longer response times, etc, etc
NO ONE should call 911 if it isn't an emergency
I'd bet that if you had a REAL emergency and it took the police/EMS a long time to get to you that you would change your idea about this.

I only call 911 if there's a fight (the 2 bros hitting each other in the street) or if there's a girl in distress. All other 'incidents' have been reported to the detective who watches their house.
ps the cops are here now....it's become so frequent I think my dog now recognizes the officers.....

Re: Jerk neighbor was 'robbed' last night, had his gun stolen -- I'm worried as hell....sorry so long!
We had a rental house that was 2 doors down from us. They were dealing, it was obvious. I called crime stoppers. I reported what I was seeing and such. They gave me a case number and told me to call back with more plates if I could. I did. It took several months but they got them, busted with a no knock warrant. I also got my county legislature involved too. It did not happen overnight, the police need evidence for all they know you are just some ****** off neighbor calling. Try the crime stoppers way and definitely calling Eddington. He can put some pressure out there. Sadly both Dormer and Levy say we do not have a police shortage but they are down 200 cops in Suffolk. I have been there I KNOW how frustrating it is

you may not agree with what i said but I was told this by many different officers and a Sgt. so I'm just going by what I was told. I dont consider kids drinking on my neighbors front yard an emergency per se but I was told it is and to say there is a fight and that way the police will get there quicker.
So I am just going by what the SCPD said personally to me.

if he has an AK47 rifle, that is illegal to have. so i don't think he has a license for it. if i saw a drug deal going on or a fight or girls cry in fear, yes I would call 911, but other then that I would call the police station directly to make complaints about the house when you think it's not an emergency. GL with this situation and stay safe. Don't over look anything that you think isn't right because it's your life and your families.

I'm pretty sure AK-47's aren't illegal in NYS. There are special rules that apply to it... but if it's a basic ak-47... it isn't illegal. I would just keep complaining to the non-emergency line. Unfortunately, I don't think there is much else you can do.

I was told the same thing when I called about blasting music at 1am. I called the local precinct and they told me to hang up and call 911. I told him flat out I'm not doing that it isn't an emergency.

Re: Jerk neighbor was 'robbed' last night, had his gun stolen -- I'm worried as hell....sorry so long!
to be honest... Owning Registered guns is a legal right...and as long as they are registered it doesn't mean that every person who owns one is a scumbag or plans to shoot a human being with it. I have a friend who has several guns...all registered...we go shooting with him often...he is well trained on safe operation of said guns. he keeps his guns locked up in a safe when not in use.
I understand your concern for your children and if the kid is definitely selling drugs that's one thing...but you don't know for sure that that is the case and i mean no disrespect but it kinda sounds like you are allowing your imagination to run wild.
I would assume the person who stole it is planning more on trying to get money for it rather than use it. because if it is registered as the neighbor says it is...it is more easily traceable should somebody try to use it. Whoever stole it is at high risk of getting caught because if they try to pawn it...it will have to be run and serial number / permits won't match up.
While I personally don't like to think of guns as an option...the reality is that we live in a $h!tty world and if someone ever trespassed into my home with the intention of causing me harm...and it came down to my life or theirs...I'd like to know I have a backup plan...because if you plan on putting your life in emergency response units hands...heh...good luck with that one.

Re: Jerk neighbor was 'robbed' last night, had his gun stolen -- I'm worried as hell....sorry so long!
i apologize in advance for the length...
The AK-47 is manufactured as a fully-automatic weapon, meaning that it is able to fire repeatedly as long as the trigger is pulled back. Before they can be imported and sold in America, they must be modified to shoot only a single bullet with each pull of the trigger.
Whenever you hear about AK-47s in the American news, you're not hearing about machine guns, unless the gun was illegally converted back to full-auto.
That said, before 1986, fully automatic weapons could be manufactured and imported into the USA. There may be some fully automatic AK-47s that were imported before then, and are therefore legal for American citizens to own and shoot. However, because they are no longer legally made or imported, existing legal machine guns are outrageously expensive.
So..... Yes either full auto or semi are both legal to own with correct tax stamps and paper work. The trick to full auto ownership is living in a area that supports your 2nd amendment right to bear military style weapons. The issue with buying a new production full auto is the cost of getting set up as a class 3 dealer, this is costly but allows you to buy new production autos. The yearly fess are high for this. Buying a fully transferable full auto is more cost per gun but less paperwork. And finally buying a semi auto is a trip to the local gun shop. AK's are like butt holes every gun guy has had one or has one. cheap to shoot, easy to teach with, and classic!

I support the right to bear arms...most of the men in my family hunt so I've grown up with guns in my house and I feel it is something that people should be able to legally do. My BIL is actually a teacher at a sniper academy and he does a lot of work with the federal agencies as well as with local g'ments throughout the Northeast...he has a gun room in his house, but it's unbelievably secure --- which is the responsible thing, IMO.
UPDATE: My problem is the lifestyle this kid leads...or appears to lead. I know I'm assuming a lot of things in this scenario, but if nothing was going on, why does SCPD have a detective watching the house? It's not just because their neighbors are concerned -- someone else MUST know something, but the police most likely don't have enough for a warrant yet.
The police were here yesterday, so I'm hoping he reported the gun stolen/missing at least. Then in the middle of the night last night the kid's car got re-po'd and knocked over my other neighbor's boulder in her yard. A little too much going on in my neighborhood right now, IMO.

I know some of my neighbors have guns, I'm fine with it, they are responsible people. But in irresponsible hands, that's scary. I think at this point you've done everything you can. I would keep an eye on them though and call the police anytime I saw suspicious activity.

yeah...I get ya...your post just made me think of my friend...bc his neighbors often call the cops on him because his car has a loud exhaust and they HATE it...and he also has friends visiting often...but its because he works on his car and friends cars...so other younger kids in the neighborhood who are interested in cars always stop by to help him and watch him work. He wears a big platinum chain and plays his music loud when he's driving and his neighbors call the cops on him regularly like he's some sort of scumbag drug dealer ...yet he's the nicest most honest, well established person i know...it makes me want to tell his neighbors to mind their business.
I HATE nosey neighbors! like the fact that your neighbors know your kids' nap schedule by when you close your blinds...that would creep me out alot.
I don't mean that in a negative way towards you...I just would not be ok with my neighbors being that deep in my business. If I see someone sitting in an unfamiliar car...I'll keep an eye on it to make sure nobody's trying to rob anybody...and if i thought somebody or their home was in serious danger...thats one thing. but like...my neighbor throwing parties when his parents are away and the underage drinking/ pot smoking...I don't get involved in that...I was a kid too once.
