JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
I foresee this will anger a bunch of travelers.
With bad weather behind it and some directly ahead of it, JetBlue Airways announced Monday a 17-hour rest period for its employees and equipment.
Effective at 1 p.m., the carrier is reducing operations at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, Boston's Logan Airport and New Jersey's Newark Airport, according to an operational update.
"This is to ensure recovery of our operations as efficiently as possible" so the airline will "be fully operable by tomorrow," JetBlue spokesman Loren Duran said in a news release.
The rest period means no flights out of the three cities from 5 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday, the release said.
Selected flights resume at 10 a.m., and the airline expects to return to normal operations by 3 p.m. Tuesday.
"This plan allows for 17 hours of rest for our equipment and crew members and time to service aircraft," the release said.
JetBlue's release acknowledges the recent weather issues, including anticipated flash freezing and record low temperatures in the New York area for Monday night and into Tuesday morning.
Customers are urged to check that status of their flights online, especially those who did not book directly with the airline.

Better than forcing a flight crew to take 200 people in the air and god forbid crash!
I'd be royally annoyed if I had plans, but what can you do, really?

My SIL was visiting us last week from NY and she was supposed to leave Friday on jetBlue but both rebooked flights were cancelled, so they were able to fly home yesterday on US Air... their connecting flight in NC was delayed 5 hours!

There are severe icing issues with this cold. I have an office in Chicago and they had to cancel flights because the de-icing just wasn't working.
I'd rather not fly with issues like this. I think its great the company made such a bold move.

completely agree. i'd rather not get to my destination and still be alive to rant and rave about it than to not be around.

I slid once landing in snow at St. Louis (TWA days) thanks but no thanks. I HATE to fly in and out of snow.
You want to cancel my flight or delay it a day or two.. fine by me. Id much rather be safe and late then dead and never arrive.

Our Chicago office is closed because of how cold it is. I definitely think Jet Blue made the right move!

It's annoying, but probably for the best.
I also like that they are sharing the plan-and when they think they can go back tot normal. I'd rather know now- then be stuck at the airport, not knowing when things would resume.

I know someone stuck somewhere bc of this and JB is not doing right by her to get her home. I'm sure they'll give her a ton of credits etc. after the fact, but for now she's shelling out a ton of money to take a different airline home.

I don't buy this and they are hiding something. If they can't run the flights because of the weather they should just come out and say they can't handle the cold. I think they are having some sort of infrastructure issue as their latest note says crews are not "in position".
If they are doing this "for safety", how come the other airlines aren't following suit? The airlines are one of the greediest industries out there. The last thing they care about is preventative safety. I can't imagine how many times they have flown deficient planes that needed repair and didn't tell people. It happens more than you think.

Other airlines did do this. Delta and American cancelled a bunch of their flights too for the same reason.

JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
There's a difference between canceling a few flights and doing close to a 24 hour shutdown. They are simply not prepared for this.

JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
I don't think the delays are due to the cold weather per se. It sounds like the storms of the past week totally messed up plane routes and crew schedules. Planes got snowed in at airports, crews exceeded their allowed duty times. They are in the process of bringing planes and crews back into "position".
Whatever the cause, better to be forewarned. Aint no fun being stranded at the airport!

You do realize they are are record cold temps all over the country and major icing issues, right? Truthfully, if I had plans to fly I would actually be nervous to do so given the extreme low temps and icing conditions everywhere. I don't think there is any conspiracy here, it sounds like a smart move and a good precautionary measure. I don't think it has anything to do with being ill prepared.
Anyone who complains about flight delays or cancellations is foolish. It's better to be safe than sorry AND having your flight delayed or cancelled is also the risk you assume when trying to fly in the winter.
Good for Jet Blue that they are considering safety over anything else.

I'm suppose to fly to the Midwest today and am really hoping they cancel as well - worried about the ice and wind.

Record cold ground temps, for THIS region. You do realize planes routinely fly in -50 degree weather outside in the air right? Temperature is not supposed to be an issue in air travel with modern planes. If it was, you would never see airports in much colder climates. I guess nobody would ever fly to Winnepeg, Edmonton, Minneapolous, Calgary, etc. These cities get this weather all the time, I guess everybody buses to these cities.
The PP said her friend had to pay a significant amount to get home because JetBlue isn't being accommodating. De-ice the plane and get them in the air.
Take a good look at this list of all the flights that left NY for San Francisco. Look at how many planes departed in this weather. Look who has the majority of the cancellations. What does that tell you? Somebody is not prepared.

Re: JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
4400 flights canceled Monday due to cold and new FAA regs
But yeah, Jetblue is hiding something. I think they canceled around 400 flights or something like that. What about the other 4000+. Other airlines. So I guess they're all hiding something.
ETA: I think Jetblue stands out b/c they were the only ones to issue an official statement.

Re: JetBlue halts flights to and from New York
And where are the majority of these cancellations? They aren't in New York, and they shouldn't be.
How would you feel if you were going on Vacation to the Dominican Republic and had JetBlue? Delta and United can fly, why can't JetBlue?
DR
Lets say you were going to London. JetBlue does not go to London, but these planes do and look they all left on time! Brrrrr.
London
Even flights to Chicago that seen the majority of cancellations still had flights going. Many airlines were TRYING to help passengers get in the air. Not Jetblue.
Chicago
Taking the kids to Disney? Look how many flights left. Look how many JetBlue cancellations there were.
Orlando
How come these other airlines can run planes but Jetblue can't?
You know where I expect to see tons of cancellations? The south. Texas. Places that don't get this weather normally and don't have the de-icing equipment to keep up with the demand. This shouldn't be happening in New York or anywhere in the northest.

I think you just have issues with Jet Blue. I also don't believe in conspiracy theories.
When you couple record cold temps with high winds, icing conditions, and crazy amounts of snow you'll likely have issues all across the country. It's a domino effect, once other airports get backed up it starts causing delays and problems everywhere else too.
Quite honestly, I'd rather them just cancel a fligh then put me on some icy plane taking off from an icy runway while the wind is blowing the plane everywhere.
Flights get delayed and cancelled, people have to just get over it. It happens. Just like trains get derailed and run behind schedule, just like public transportation isn't always timely, just like there are times where you're stuck in traffic, etc. Shit happens.
People just love to b1tch and moan about everything.........people have zero tolerance anymore.

This. I also agree that something is up with Jetblue. Starting at 3 o clock yesterday I was listening to 1010 Winns and they were at the airport just reporting this story that Jetblue flights would be cancelled starting at 5 pm. About an hour or so later they were speaking to passengers reporting this to them. Those passengers stated it was news to them. They never got any notice.JetBlue crew seemed unaware and were even checking in passengers for later flights that the news told them were cancelled. The ones that were advised were not reaccommodated in any way.Something isn't right.

I have issues with any airline that can't get their act together, when all they are doing lately is banging us with ridiculous fees for everything from a pillow to a meal to a checked bag.
I showed proof that this issue is solely with JetBlue and it hasn't "cascaded" to other airlines. This issue is SOLELY with JetBlue. Other airlines are operating at near normal capacity.
What have you shown? You don't have the stomach to get on a plane during cold weather? You are most definitely welcome to having that opinion. I say cancel YOUR seat and let others who might have been waiting days and are WILLING to fly to get on and get home to their families.
