Job advice needed....long..UPDATE 6/19
A little background....I was laid off last year around the holidays....so I decided to start my own consulting business. I was contacted through an agency to work at a large retail company on a contract type basis for X amount of dollars per hour. Although the hourly rate was lower than what I wanted...I also needed to get my foot in the door and find something, so I took it. It is fairly close to home (about 30 min drive) and I got to their offices everyday.
Well....my contract ends on June 30, and I've been told that they want to keep me on for the next phase of the project I was hired to do. They have said they are willing to re-negotiate the hourly rate. The agency and the retailer had a meeting today...but no determination was made with 2 weeks left to go on my contract, so I'm still stuck waiting.
I also got an offer to take on another project...for alot more $$$ (even more that what I would re-negotiate for), but this job is in Las Vegas. I would travel to their site on Monday, and stay there and return on Thursdays. This is for 3 months. All travel expenses paid. However...I'm currently 5 1/2 months PG and not sure I can commit to that kind of travelling for the next 3 months. They know my situation and are still willing to work with me, and I could work remotely from home after the first month of being on-site.
So...what do I do? Take the sure thing where I would travel alot for more $$$, or wait out the local job for less $$$ without the worry of travel?
DH says take the job in Las Vegas, because if I want to grow my business I have to take risks.
So...what do you think?
UPDATE 6/19: The doctor said it was ok. He said people commute 2 hours each way everyday, so he didn't see any harm in it. He just said to make sure I keep my legs moving and drink plenty of water....and no travel after 36 weeks. So, looks like I'm going to Vegas!

Re: Job advice needed....long
being 5 1/2 months pregnant I wouldn't put that stress and amount of travel on my body. I think thats cutting it way to close to your due date. I would stay put but let them know there is another offer on the table for alot more money but you enjoy working for them and would really like to work together to come up with something everyone is happy with.

This is a hard one!
I dont know how your pregnancy has been, and having never been pregnant before this may not be the right thing to do since I dont know what its really like.
But I would not take the Vegas thing. I know you are not supposed to be "crippled" so to speak when you are pregnant, I mean you should not limit what you want to do because you are pregnant. But I would rather be close to home at this time. God forbid you needed your dr for something right away, plus who knows what else you will be going through with the pregnancy and you would want to be near DH/family. Money is not worth the risk IMO, and trust me I am broke!
Hey this is just what I would do - good luck with whatever you decide!

I agree with HB and I meant to post the same thing regarding if something happens or you need to see your Dr. or go into early labor, etc. Imagine going into labor in LV and your DH being in NY

I see your points...but, I told them that I might not be able to travel in September (I'm due late October) and would prefer to work remotely...so that's definitely a possibility. DH says he would hop the first flight to LV if something should happen and I couldn't get home.

Re: Job advice needed....long
I would not feel comfortable traveling mid- thru late pregnancy so the choice would be easy for me. Even if things are perfect you never know if they could change. Good Luck.

there are always crazy things that happen where you just cant get a flight right away plus I would not feel comfortable giving birth in another state and then having to fly home with an infant. I just wouldn't do it.
But its a personal choice and if you are comfortable with it go for it.
ETA: Plus you will be all alone out in LV for 4 days every week. I remember when I was PG and to be honest with you I would not have been able to handle being away from my family and DH like that every week for months.
Pregnancy is physically and emotionally draining and I felt like I just needed that support system ( like the nights I would be up all night crying b/c I was scared to give birth or was afraid how my labor would go etc.)

Re: Job advice needed....long
I wouldn't take the LV job. Have you talked to your doctor about it? I would be surprised if he was okay with it, plus airlines will not let you fly after a certain amount of weeks.
The stress of a new job, plus the stress of traveling - no way!

Re: Job advice needed....long
Hmmm.......since I've never been pregnant, I really can't comment on the pregnancy aspect of this, so I'll just add my 2 cents on the business aspect of it.
It sounds like a great offer in trying to really establish your business. If they are as flexible as they seem about your pregnancy, allowing you to work remotely and not travel soooo much, I'd do it.

Re: Job advice needed....long
At 8 1/2 months pg you are not going to feel up to traveling and you will want to be close to home. But if you can work from home after the first month, I would take it.

Re: Job advice needed....long
This is hard. If you weren't PG, I'd say VEGAS...
I guess I'm still leaning toward Vegas. But, I'd tell the current job that you need an answer ASAP because you have another offer pending (this could also help you negotiate a higher rate too)

I would not take the Vegas Job. I also belive you are not really supposed to fly in your 3rd trimester. I wouldn't take that chance. JMO! Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Re: Job advice needed....long
Thanks everyone. I have a doctor's appointment on Monday...so I am going to ask him about the travel situation. If he says that there's not a problem...I'm going to take it. I feel like this may be a one time opportunity to make a name for myself and help me get more established. I will update you all on Monday with the doctor's news! Thanks much.

I hope the Doc says yes b/c I think you should take it
esp since your DH thinks you should take it- I think that's a good sign- that would be a big concern of mine

Re: Job advice needed....long
I think it is a great opportunity at the wrong time.
I had to do some travel during months five through eight. In my case, I did not feel comfortable getting on a plane at 30 weeks leaving my husband and my doctor behind - virtually nobody to lean on in case something happened. However, I did it.
If your Dr. says it is ok and you feel comfortable with it, go for it. Just weight everything and be sure of yourself.

Re: Job advice needed....long
this might be your last opportunity to go for it before the baby comes along. I say go for it, and expand the business. Then work remotely after your first month being on site!
GO FOR IT!!

Yayyyyyyyyy!! it sounds like such an Awesome opportunity! Congratulations!!
also- for the plane trips.... there's exercises that you could look up (i dont know them off the top of my head)... to avoidDVT (deep vein Thrombosis). Some airlines have them in back of the seats, but its helpful to already know them-- and that'll help avoid excessive swelling and blood clots
Congrats, again!!
