There’s a few things going on:
-More women left the workforce than men during the pandemic due to inadequate childcare in the country.
-Places like Best Buy screwed over their workers while the CEO is now making 400k more than the average worker because Best Buy laid off a bunch of workers and/or cut hours so employees wouldn’t qualify for health insurance. This happened in many companies across the country.
-Unemployment isn’t a hand out. It’s an insurance policy you pay into with each pay period. When you get into a car accident and you get a check from your insurance company, you don’t refer to it as a handout.
Also this: "We have to pay our CEO $20 million or he'll quit to go somewhere else!!! It's basic supply and demand."
[can't find anyone to work minimum wage jobs with no benefits]: "There's nothing we can do!”
Spoken by someone who has a rudimentary understanding of economics.
Signed,
Someone who has her Master’s in economics.
I thought you were an attorney? But, I would be interested in your thoughts as well.

Jobs report
My DH is a retail manager. They are so short staffed, can't manage to hire. No one wants to work. It's crazy...

Several small businesses in my town can't find workers and have to close. This is the Democrat's plan: crush small business and make people dependent on the government. When people depend on the government for handouts, they'll keep voting Democrat, and the cycle continues. It's sad.
That’s one characteristic of Big Government.

I still think if you’re making more unemployed then you weren’t making a fair and decent wage with proper benefits to begin with. Similarly, if someone is making more than me on unemployment, I’m not being paid fairly.
Many people love having a union (teachers, police, electricians, etc) but then don’t understand why people don’t want to work for unfair wages and zero benefits.
I just want people to be paid well and be taken care of. Happy employees who are treated well and feel good about their jobs are able to function better in society.
I can understand if this was the case of big companies but with small companies who are still struggling big time to barely keep afloat, how can u demand from them to pay a big increase??

Re: Jobs report
i said from the beginning people who are getting paid more to sit home are not going to return to work and that's what seems to be happening.
I am sick of hearing if people are getting paid more to sit home than what they were making they weren't being paid fairly is bull. now is not the time to fix that.
Also not for nothing everyone wants people to get paid more but to me its crazy that someone who did not go to college and work their assesss off will be paid almost the same amount of money for some one who did for an entry level job. its one thing if you started at the bottom and move up to a good paying based on experience; that I get.
So if we want higher wages for people who make to little now for entry level jobs with no education or experience than we should be expecting higher wages for those that make a "decent' amount of money now.

then why arent people paid what they were making the whole time before they were laid off on unemployment.
why is there a cap??? there really shouldnt be!!!
I have worked for 20+ years of my life had to go on unemployment one time so far and didnt even get close to what I made and I am sure I paid a hell of a lot in unemployment !

When I got into a car accident I got reimbursed for money I had to pay. I didn’t continue to get paid and I didn’t get paid more than my repairs.
If that was the case, people would just be destroying their cars left and right to get newer more expensive cars. Hmmm....kind of like sitting home getting paid close to or more than you made for doing nothing.

Especially when many of them had to close for so long last year!
I have an older family member who got let go from her very part time job. She filed for unemployment and is making a ton more than she was making at her part time job. She doesn't have to show she's looking for work like she's done in the past so she just keeps collecting.
I was on unemployment a couple of years ago and didn't make anything great and had to prove I was searching for employment. It took awhile to find something but I was actively searching. For the wage she was making, she could've easily found something - but she can collect more in unemployment.

Jobs report
Would it had been better for society and the economy if all the people on unemployment just lost all their money, jobs, homes? About 20 million jobs were lost by May 2020. Would it have been better if all those people just shriveled up and disappeared?
I’m not sure why people are ********. If you have a job and never lost it during this time, you’re really angry/resentful that someone is finally (temporarily) making probably a fourth of what you take home? And spending it and pumping it back in the economy? I’m not.

I am not saying that. I was/am ok for people to receive unemployment what I am not ok was with people getting more money to sit home then when they were working when you have people who were unemployed still not getting even with the extra what they earn. People should have been paid what they were getting and thats it.
And I worked very hard to get where I am and the money I earned. I will not feel guilty for that and I will not see it as my problem or anyone elses that someone isnt making as much as I do for something I earned on my own!

Most people worked hard to get where they are. I don’t care if someone is (again temporarily) making a bit more then the underpaid salary they had beforehand. I’ve been luckily employed the entire time without any insecurity. I stay in my own lane.
It seems people have a very karenesque attitude towards others about this but no one cares that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk made more during the pandemic.

All the degrees in the world can’t change the fact that people aren’t going to work part time for pennies, often times paying for their own materials (cell, uniform, vehicle) and no benefits.
It’s not companies that take care of employees that are having issues hiring. It’s sectors that tend to exploit their workers...
One winner was on TV stating he would rather pay his employees $500 to get the vaccine rather than offer sick time .. he was smug and sounds like a total asshat. Offering sick time is part of the responsibility of being an employer.
Actually it depends what type of employer you are. For example, I worked in fast food as a teenager. If I called out sick, I didn't get paid. Many jobs should not offer sick time. Also, when I moved into the professional world and worked at very large companies, we were allotted a certain amount of sick, personal and vacation days. It was not unlimited sick time. If I had gotten severely ill I would have had to go on short term disability.
I was a small business owner. I could barely afford to pay my employees minimum wage. In fact I ended up losing money. But people are constantly complaining about the high cost of things. You want your lawn mowed but you certainly don't want to pay a lot to have it done. If people put their money where their mouth is and pay for the cost of providing everyone a living wage and benefits that would be great but I am fairly certain with the amount of ******** on this board about the high COL on LI as it is, that's not the case. Not every business is looking to make millions and exploit their employees in the process. I'm guessing you have never owned and operated a small business.
Ok so you decide to start your own business great for you but you can't expect others to work for you for pennies just because your a small business owner and your not making a profit. Employees will go where the money is and sometimes that even means the extra perks like PTO or benefits. So tired of hearing small business owners complain about not getting good help yet they aren't willing to pay them a decent wage. And yes my entire family are self employed so I hear the complaints constantly.

I sold my business because it was impossible to be profitable and pay my employees what they deserve. I am not complaining because I learned my lesson and will never do it again. However I am constantly hearing complaints that the COL is too high on long island and also that small business and main streets are getting decimated. It's because no one can afford to own and operate a small business anymore. That to me is sad. Perhaps there should be a different minimum wage for people under 18 that way businesses can hire younger, part time workers the way they used to and pay them a fair wage for a 16 year old. This whole issue is off topic though - it was mainly in response to people saying that if you can't find employees its because you aren't paying enough. That's not always the case.
But the main issue right now is that it is way more lucrative for many people to collect unemployment right now than it is to work. That's why we have a shortage of job candidates.

Yes, they will make less when they finally get a job but it makes no sense for them to get all that extra when they could have just gotten at least their regular salary to help them pay their bills or whatever they used their paycheck for before.

In that scenario I would think the parents would intervene if the kids are living at home. If my child was going to the beach and refusing to get a job, they’d now have rent equal to the payment and/or all of it would go towards their student loans (if they had any). Parents house, parents rules!

We agreed no job was fine right now with the overload of school. Even taking classes in winter and summer. My actual point is I don’t think they should be getting a substantial amount more than they would have working. If you are working part time and making say $300 a week or less, you shouldn’t be now taking home more than double that.

I agree - and I don't fault them for doing that - why not make more $$ and benefit from this as they are the ones who are going to have to pay it back someday.
I read this am that Biden said that anyone turning down a job offer should lose unemployment - which makes sense - but it's not sure how it will be enforced.

I heard that this morning. I do wonder how they will have to show proof that employment was offered. Im sorry, if you do get offered a job and you turn it down, you should lose unemployment benefits!

I do remember that "back in the day" when collecting UI, you had to show you were looking for jobs, going on interviews etc. My dad used to have to go down to the UI office weekly or something and show what jobs he applied for, etc. I remember him keeping records.
Honestly, that sounds like a huge PIA but I can see how it would discourage people abusing it

Yes - I collected a couple of years ago. I needed to do a certain number of job hunting activities each week and log them. They could audit my log at any time. I was also required to accept any job that offered a certain amount of money or better. If I didn't find a job in a certain period of time, the number dropped.
Right now to collect unemployment - you don't even have to be looking for new employment and you don't meet with anyone. You just go online every week.

Yup years ago it was like this and they still tell you when calling up you need to do it but they are not enforcing it right now. Probably too many people they would have to keep track of.

Re: Jobs report
UI is meant to be temporary. If we expect small businesses to pay a livable wage (which varies depending who you ask ) we need to be prepared for major inflation on what they sell. Take a carvel for example. Will you pay $10-$15 a cone so that the people that work there can make $20 an hour? Is $20 and hour before taxes a livable wage? Small businesses need to pay more than just their employees. They have to cover rent and insurance. Should a livable wage be decided by age? Does a 16 year old need to get paid a livable wage?
We were talking about summer jobs for our high schoolers the other day and one response was my kid makes more money on UI than she would working so why should she get a job. She is collecting UI off a seasonal job that she had. I have 2 issues with this. That kid would most likely not be working now anyway because she has school and she has never worked during the school year before. Just seasonal positions. My other issue is what this teaches the kid. It doesn't help their work ethic and proves that they can just rely on the gov't. My teenager has to get a summer job. Not because he needs the money. He works to learn responsibility, social skills, how to interact with a boss and co-workers. The added bonus is he makes his own money which he has to manage and use for things he wants. Life skills are important.
People need to go back to work. The economy is opening and there are jobs to be had.
