John Edwards admits he fathered child with mistress

Washington (CNN) -- Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina has admitted that he fathered a girl with his mistress.
"I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves," Edwards said in a statement.
The former 2008 Democratic presidential candidate previously denied that he was the girl's father.
"It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me," Edwards said.
"To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry."
Edwards earlier admitted that he had an affair with Rielle Hunter while he was campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Edwards' campaign paid Hunter $114,000 to make a series of short videos about his presidential campaign, and she traveled extensively with the candidate's entourage.
Hunter gave birth in February 2008 to a baby girl. She is widely reported to have named the girl Quinn.
Edwards denied that he was the girl's father for more than a year, saying the affair was over before Hunter became pregnant.
Now he has admitted it.
"I am Quinn's father," his statement said. "I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace.
"I have been providing financial support for Quinn and have reached an agreement with her mother to continue providing support in the future."

so was he still running for president when he knew that he had this child in hiding? did he just think that if he was elected this would not be discovered?! I always thought he was such a slimebag.

I never liked him. From years ago when I lived in NC. He always looked "up to something" to me.

His "master plan" was to pay off Andrew Young (one of his campaign staffers) to say the baby was his. He proposed to him that he would take care of him financially forever if he would claim paternity (he did initially). This is Andrew's story and what is in his book that is just about to come out. Hence John Edward's sudden need to tell the truth. Not so much him WANTING to come clean as much as it is him HAVING to come clean. He's such a scumbag on so many levels.

I'm fascinated by this story.
Mostly because Rielle Hunter - real name Lisa Druck - was the basis for the character of Alison Poole in Jay McInerny's "Story of My Life."

Thanks for the link- I am going to read this now. I am waiting for my copy of Game Change, about the 2008 election, and part of it focuses on the Edwardses and their images.

I lived in NC when he was senator and pretty much the entire state loathed him.

Thanks for the link- I am going to read this now. I am waiting for my copy of Game Change, about the 2008 election, and part of it focuses on the Edwardses and their images.
I just started this book last night, it's really good so far.

They both don't really seem to live up to their public images do they?
Honestly, even given this piece, I still find it hard to pass judgement on her. Maybe she is a nasty person and always was, and her husband was driven to an affair. Maybe she knew or thought something was going on with him and that's why she treated him like crap in public. Maybe she is angry about the loss of her child and her cancer and not dealing well. Plus, she was in the intense spotlight of a national political campaign which is more scrutiny than any of us ever deal with. So I can't say I would do any better if I was in her shoes.
I just finished another book about the 08 campaign that was not nearly as salacious--don't know if the authors of the book I read knew about this or not. There is something a bit unseemly about revealing these details though. There was dish about everyone in the book I read actually, except Obama. And McCain come to think of it--there were noted problems with his campaign, but he did come across as a decent person. But Edwards, the Clintons, Palin, oh vey.
