Jones Beach Air Show

Anyone going this weekend?

I want to desperatly go and I am sure DS will enjoy the planes, but I've never been. I hear it's REALLY loud. Also have been told to get there early to get a good spot. I'm afraid to be there "all day" w/ DS.

Any ideas where we can go nearby??

Re: Jones Beach Air Show

I would love to go again this year, but unless my inlaws watch my DS (he's only 6 weeks)... then we won't be going. We took my DD who was 2 last year... we brought ear plugs and she had a great time! The boardwalk is packed with food stands, etc. It's a fun day!

We go to Wantagh Park to watch just the Blue Angels/Thunderbirds portion (they seem to switch off each year) They usually go from 2-3pm, so we get there around 1:30, put down a blanket in the field to the left of the pool and they fly over the park a few times as part of their show.

You don't see all the stuff, like when they zip along the shore and scare everyone or the close up stuff, but they fly low enough a few times that you can read the bottoms of the planes and my kids were able to read the numbers on them last year. It's enough to make them happy and they get to run around and play catch and all that fun stuff. The planes are not that loud and the park is not at all crowded.

Another option is to go to Republic and watch them take off and/or land, but that can be loud.

Also, Saturday morning in Eisenhower a bunch of Marine helicoptors are landing and doing demonstrations as part of Fleet Week. I read about it in Newsday this week, I think they said it's the largest military helicoptor demonstration this year.

I go every year. I am bit afraid of the noise this year but, I think that even if he gets scared it will be only for a minute. We do make it an all day thing. We bring coolers, umbrellas and I have a little tent thing for Liam to take naps in. There is so much to do and see up on the boardwalk if you get tired of sitting in the sand. It is the BEST!Chat Icon

Re: Jones Beach Air Show

We went last year, Noah loved it and wasn't scared of the noise. Its a bit loud a few times.

We got there EARLY just b/c of the parking issue , and parked all the way at the end. Parked up against the sand, but had to walk a WHILE on sand to get to the beach. Then it was overcast and the 10 start was a almost 2 o clock start ( but they shortened the program ) ....

anyway, we were there from like 8:30 am till about 4 o clock and DS was fine ( and we didnt bring a lot of toys b/c we didnt think we'd be there long.

This year were packing it ALL....LOL

Re: Jones Beach Air Show

I changed my mind, I thought long and hard and realized I'd be insane to drag all 3 and all their crap...lol

But we only live a few blocks from Republic Airport, so were gonna head there.

Donna, last year we pulled over on the Meadowbrook Pkwy - right outside of one of the fields. We had Jack in his stoller and sat on the grass. We were able to see everything. It was great. I'll be doing it again tomorrow with the boys bc we have two parties so we'll only be able to go for an hour or so.

There were sooooo many people who had chairs and did this also. Maybe it's easier then going onto the beach (and you can even leave the girls in the car if they are sleeping)
