So although the reflux is definitely not "fixed," his medications have kept it under control relatively speaking and he's been on the Alimentum for about a month now. Since last night, he has been horrible. Absolutely horrible. Writhing in pain, wanting to eat but spitting out bottle, SCREAMING in pain uncontrollablyChat Icon It's like it was 5-6 weeks ago before we discovered the allergy and started reflux meds.
I don't know what to do. Why could this be happening? Could he be developing an immunity to the Alimentum or to his medications? He's barely eating because he's in so much pain. I just got him down to sleep with the help of the dustbuster and the dyson,Chat Icon but I'm sure he'll be up soon since he barely ate. My ped's office has a location that is open tomorrow, but I feel there's no point to call because when they hear he's under care of a GI, they'll just tell me to call them. It's going to be a long 36 hours until the GI's office opens on Monday. I just don't know what to do for my little man and I pray that the Alimentum has not suddenly stopped working somehow. I wonder if his medications aren't enough because the dosages were based on his weight a month ago. I just don't know what to do for himChat Icon

Is it possible for the oediatrician to change the dosage of his medication? It sounds like his growth in a month could mean the dosage isn't right for him anymore.

I agree with Amy, if he's grown at all in the past month, his meds probably need adjusting. That happened a lot with AvaChat Icon

Really? That she would be doing fine, relatively speaking, and suddenly take a major turn for the worse? I'm not going to bother the GI on Easter, so the earliest I can call would be Monday morning. I just don't know what to do or what else it could be. I hope it is that simple though. I don't know if it's directly related to the Alimentum or he just doesn't want to drink it because he's in so much pain from the reflux. My heart is breaking for him, he's in so much pain.

His meds most likely need to be adjusted. I'd ask the GI or ped to have more frequent appts if necessary so that the meds are properly dosed according to his weight Chat Icon I'd call tomorrow and see if they can help at all.. GL!

I just feel like the regular ped isn't going to be able to help because the medicines were prescribed by the GI. Actually, the Prevacid was first prescribed by the reg ped, but the others from the GI. Our next appt w/the GI isn't until the 13th, but like I said, I'm definitely calling Monday morning.
I'm wondering if he could be sick in some other way but I don't think so. He first didn't really want to eat on Wed, but then was ok until last night. Just everything is 100x times worse - the grunting, the arching, the crying - everythingChat Icon

DS is on Zantac and the dose is weight based---from his 2 month to 3 month visit his dose changed a lot and he was really bad a few days before his dose was upped. I think its worth going to the ped so they can at least get a good weight on him and if they won't change the dose for you, you can atleast call the GI with the correct new weight

I prob will end up calling ped tomorrow if tonight is as bad as I think it's going to beChat Icon and I will prob call GI on Monday morning and tell them I want to bring him in - not just wait for a call back. Zantac was the last medication added and he's been on that for a little less than two weeks, but I felt like I saw a greater improvement once it was added. I wonder if the dosage could change on that so quickly.

I've also posted about my major issues with getting his meds into him and feeling like he never gets his full doses. For the past few days, I've really been getting all his meds into him and it's just so strange that NOW he would have problems.

Like the others said, the meds are weight based and may need to be changed, but I still think that maybe your best bet is an RX formula. The difference for us was HUGE from the Alimentum to the Elecare.

Alimentum still has traces of milk protein in it. If he has an allergy, that trace builds up over time, and eats away at their gut ( stomach) slowly and so would explain why it took a bit of time to affect him. And once the gut is at its worse affected wise, its sooo painful Chat Icon

Yes Our Zantac was adjusted very frequently at first, every time Chloe gained weight. Once we were on the Elecare for about 3 weeks we were able to completly stop the Zantac.

Also somce meds are better then others, Some babies need to try 2-3 to find what works best.
Ask the GI though. They really know best. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Jordan has been doing so badly the past 24 hours - Alimentum and/or Reflux moms - has this happened to any of your babies?

Thanks, Donna. Since starting the Alimentum, his diapers have been blood-free. I am absolutely planning on bringing a diaper to the GI on Monday. I was thinking about that - what if the sensitivity is a "true" allergy. I'm assuming there would be blood in his poop again? I'm going to be honest, I am terrified that he WILL need to go on the Elecare or Neocate. DH's insurance does NOT cover it - which blows my mind because it is a prescription. I simply do not know how we would be able to afford it. We can't afford it. It's that simple. We would, of course, have to get it, but I don't know how we would manage.

I've been doing some research online tonight and there seems to be a lot of debate on whether Prevacid dosage is based on weight. Many things I'm seeing says it is not. But, the Zantac is. As we know, babies gain weight constantly/daily. So what happens - they get a weekly weight check and meds are adjusted that often?

Meds definitely need adjustment as LO's grow...We had more than a few of those episodes.

You poor thing! I remember how difficult those reflux days were. I was consumed with worry and fear about my little guy and what was happening....My DS was absolutely miserable almost all the time. I was not even able to continue breastfeeding as DS could not tolerate it....and that is usually the most easily digested substance to give a refluxer. His situation was severe...and when I read any reflux posts I almost feel like it is my job to try to help if I can. I know how tough the path you are on is right now.

Have you considered a consultation and treatment with a Ped. Chiropractor? That was our saving grace. We finally were able to get DS off all the meds that were being pumed into his little body and also off the Elecare prescription formula. I thought it was a little kooky at first but we were really out of options to try to help our DS.

We are now reflux free!!! Our ped. Chiro. is in Huntington on Jericho Tpke if anyone is interested in a natural approach. ...Please feel free to FM me. Chat Icon

Hey Michal. I am so sorry you are going through this and trust ne, we went through the same thing. Liek Donna said some babies just can't handle the slight bit of milkprotein thats in Alimentum/Nutramigen and you may need to go to an amino acid formula.

My insurance covered it as an exception and you never know, if you call them and beg, plead and cry you may be able to get someone to help you. Bottom line is-iof he is allergic he CANNOT be on the alimentum it is making tiny cuts in his intestine...maybe your family can assist...Anyway-your ped should also havve a rep from Enfamil(they rep Nutramigen AA which is just like Elecare and Neocate and they may be able to help you.) Hav eyou tried soy? Even though aboiut 40% of babies allergic to milk are allergic to soy that means 60% are NOT so that may be an option. Still this point I would be speaking with an allergist and they can test him on soy and that may solve your issue. If he can have it. Good luckChat Icon Trust me I know how you feel...we went through this as well

We just went through the same thing with DS. He needed an adjustment with his dosage of meds. He went from 2ML a day to 3 and in about 2 weeks he was doing great...

Thanks, Melissa. How would we know if he was truly allergic? Wouldn't there be blood in the poop again? I am writing down all these things to ask the doctor. I thought Nutramagin was like Alimentum - just Enfamil's version.
My little guy can go from smiling to screaming in 2 seconds flat - it just kills me. We are going up to NY on the 14th - I just want some answers before then. They did not want him on soy at all. In fact, switched his oatmeal brand because it had a trace of soy in it. But, I am going to ask about an allergist, as well.

The blood in poop is not full proof ya know? I was talking about Nutamigen AA-amino acid-it has no milk or soy proteins at all. I would do the allergist frist-test for soy and then try him on soy. If not then amino acid is your only resort. Also you have to think-you are TREATING the symptoms of reflux with the meds(which have to be processed through his liver) but not reallly getting to the source of the issue. Declan was MISERABLE on breast milk, alimentum, nutramigen etc. Once we went to amino acid he was a changed baby in 24 hrs. To this day he cannot have dairy or even have someone touch him who touched dairy-it was a true allergy.

Can you just make an appt with the allergist? You don;t need a referral do you?

I don't believe I need a referral but I would need to speak to my ped's office (or the GI) to see who they recommend. My ped is in a practice and he's away for the whole month of April - figures. So, if blood in poop isn't completely accurate indicator of milk allergy, how do we know - just from the allergist?

In my experience, yes. My family has ridiculous stomach issues/diseases so that was also part of it. But-that's what the drs did with my brother. It was a huge PITA but at first my mother had to bring him weekly for medication adjustments because he was gaining weight after being on meds. Then after about 3mos or so, the drs (GI and ped) came up with an outline of projected weight gain and appropriate dosages. After that my brother went to the ped and GI only 1xs a month, but the appts were only 2wks apart so he was always monitored.

Good luck! I really hope it is just a medication issue and not an allergy. I'm sending positive vibes and lots of prayers Chat Icon

You can also do a search on google and read recommendations for allergists. Are there any Mommy chat boards in your area?

As far as allergies-even the allergist told us that a scratch test could not pick up allergies..for instance Ronan tests negative for everything but when he eats beef he gets hives around his mouth. When he eats banannas he gets excema....thye allergist told us a physical reaction is proof positive that something is going on even if the "tests" are negative.

DS went through that too, but was helped immensely by Nutramigen (the regular one, not AA) and Zantac. I never had his dosage of Zantac adjusted because for DS, the difference was completely after going on the Nutramigen.

Re: Jordan has been doing so badly the past 24 hours - Alimentum and/or Reflux moms - has this happened to any of your babies?

My DD NEVER tested postive for blood in the stool. Her reflux was so bad that they wanted to put in a feeding tube because she couldn't keep enough food down and wasn't gaining enough weight. The day the GI wanted to put the tube in, I insisted that we give Elecare a try. He agreed, for 5 days and that was the turning point for us. I'm convinced that she had some sort of intolerance to the formula. We tried all of them before the Elecare even though she never had a "true allergy". Your GI doc probably has samples so you can try it before investing anything. We used samples until the insurance started covering it.

ETA: as you can see from my avatar, she is now a happy meatball!!
