Re: Jordan has been doing so badly the past 24 hours - Alimentum and/or Reflux moms - has this happened to any of your babies?

Thanks, Donna. Since starting the Alimentum, his diapers have been blood-free. I am absolutely planning on bringing a diaper to the GI on Monday. I was thinking about that - what if the sensitivity is a "true" allergy. I'm assuming there would be blood in his poop again? I'm going to be honest, I am terrified that he WILL need to go on the Elecare or Neocate. DH's insurance does NOT cover it - which blows my mind because it is a prescription. I simply do not know how we would be able to afford it. We can't afford it. It's that simple. We would, of course, have to get it, but I don't know how we would manage.
I've been doing some research online tonight and there seems to be a lot of debate on whether Prevacid dosage is based on weight. Many things I'm seeing says it is not. But, the Zantac is. As we know, babies gain weight constantly/daily. So what happens - they get a weekly weight check and meds are adjusted that often?
I can help you get it covered by insurance, you would have to appeal it. Theres some people on here that can give you some cans I'm sure ( including me ) to lhold you over.
The Dr's office ( GI) has to be on board and ready to fight the insurance. BAsically they tell them its his ONLY source of nutrition, he would die without eating, its all he can eat and you cannot afford it.
Talk to the Dr's again please.

Re: Jordan has been doing so badly the past 24 hours - Alimentum and/or Reflux moms - has this happened to any of your babies?
Blood in the poop may not be visible to your eye so def get re-tested just in case it is a true allergy. Hopefully it's just a dosage issue. My DD's been on Alimentum since about 2 weeks old - we found blood in her poop and the ped switched us immediately. At 7 weeks old, she started back-arching, vomiting, crying, and demanding food hourly but not eating any of it unless it was a mealtime - that's when I suspected reflux and the ped put her on Zantac first. The Zantac helped a lot but she was now spitting up a lot instead of vomiting and would freak out after 3-3.5 ounces of formula - started spacing out her feedings during the day, added one back at night, and was up all hours of the night - we were miserable. Ped was on vacation so one of the other peds took my call - said that doesn't sound like reflux to me. I disagreed and asked about rice cereal like 6 times during that call. She said well I don't think it'll work but you'll know in a day if it doesn't so give it a try and call us back tomorrow if it fails. I put 1/2 tsp in every 4 ounce bottle and 1 tsp in her last bottle of the day, which is 6 ounces. All this behavior stopped within 24 hours and she is STTN again. I have read that rice cereal can be really helpful for a reflux baby - it weighs down the formula so it doesn't rise up as much - so you should ask your ped GI if it's worth a shot since you'll know quickly if it works or not. DD's still on the Zantac and Alimentum but the rice cereal helped address what these couldn't. Just another suggestion. You may need Elecare or Neocate or Nutramigen AA (different from regular Nutramigen), but before you go that far, I would ask about rice cereal. Also, I read that soy is not worth trying until the intestinal tract is healed - even if your DC is not allergic to soy and can go on soy formula - it can be hard on an irritated intestine. This and the overlap between milk and soy protein allergies is why most peds skip over soy and reach for the Alimentum. Good luck!!

sweety - call the GI doc TODAY (sunday). They have to have an answering service that can help - or connect you to the doc.
ITA Miki.....someone has to be on call. This is not a frivolous call. See if maybe they help you adjust how much you're giving him based on weight gain. and that this gets better.

Meds definitely need adjustment as LO's grow...We had more than a few of those episodes.
You poor thing! I remember how difficult those reflux days were. I was consumed with worry and fear about my little guy and what was happening....My DS was absolutely miserable almost all the time. I was not even able to continue breastfeeding as DS could not tolerate it....and that is usually the most easily digested substance to give a refluxer. His situation was severe...and when I read any reflux posts I almost feel like it is my job to try to help if I can. I know how tough the path you are on is right now.
Have you considered a consultation and treatment with a Ped. Chiropractor? That was our saving grace. We finally were able to get DS off all the meds that were being pumed into his little body and also off the Elecare prescription formula. I thought it was a little kooky at first but we were really out of options to try to help our DS.
We are now reflux free!!! Our ped. Chiro. is in Huntington on Jericho Tpke if anyone is interested in a natural approach. ...Please feel free to FM me.
Thank you! We are in South Florida, but I am going to bring up a chiro. to the GI. I just want to help my poor little guy.
I highly recommend a ped. chiro! Most peds wll not agree with it......but for us we saw immediate results!!!! Was Jordan a c-section baby?

Yes - he was a c-section. Does that make a difference? Weird. To answer some questions that some of you asked - he's been getting oatmeal in his bottle for 3+ weeks now. One of the formula changes was Similac Sensitive RS (rice starch) but he had horrible horrible constipation from the rice starch, so no rice cereal. Last night was a tough night - he was up every 3-4 hours and miserable - it just kills me. Today was not great either. He goes back and forth - 1 bottle I can barely get an ounce in him and then next he'll drink more, prob cause he's so hungry. I'm calling the GI first thing tomorrow morning and I will let you all know what happens.

Miki, I hate to say it, but it really does sound like he needs an amino acid formula Because as bad as Ava's reflux ever was, she never cried a single moment at a feeding after we started giving her Neocate. Not a single feeding did she arch her back, push the bottle away, or anything. In fact, after a while, we just stopped giving her the meds because she wasn't in pain and we felt it was silly to give them if she was fine. Hang in there. You will find a way to get the formula. I promise. And to this day, every ounce of debt I accrued from having to pay out of pocket for the Neocate was worth it. I would do it again in a heart beat.

I guess I'm just confused because I thought the arching and crying is due to the reflux, not the formula. At this point, I don't care if we have to go on one of the AA formulas, well I do, but you know what I mean. I just want him to be healthy and happy.

The reflux is due to the milk protein allergy. That is what I was saying before that once he does go on an AA formula you will probably not need the Zantac because it is just teating symptoms where a different formula will treat the problem. I would still look into getting him tested for soy. And lastly-start trusting yourself. YOU are his Mommy and make the decision regarding his health. The Dr's can guide you, but ultimately you can insist on what you would like.

DS is on Elecare and still needs his reflux medicine. He has reflux and Elecare is really thin so that aggrivates the reflux. Your DC has to be seen by a GI. Regular doctor's can only do so much. My son was on 5 different formula's for the blood in his stool and is now on his second medication for the reflux. Every child is different. Some babies do fine on one formula and others not so much. DS was on Nutramigen and was ok for a while, and then he was switched to Alumentim and did 100 times worse. Zantac worked so much better for him then the Axid, but he despises the taste of it...

Really? I thought babies can just have reflux. I didn't know they went hand in hand. Rusty - he is already under the care of a ped GI.
