Re: Jr Student gets kicked of basketball team over hair cut...Discuss
i think its kinda ridiculous to have these rules but thats just in general... including the Pros....
but for the sake of this argument... if this rule is already in place and he knows it then i really dont have a problem with them not letting him play...

The parents & student agreed to the rules by participating on the team. If they don't want to adhere to them, this is the consequence.

Unless a kid is shaving profanities into his head, I don't see what the issue is.
If it is a private school and hair is part of the dress code, fine. But this is a junior high coach's rule, not the school's.
ETA to say I don't think the coach should be able to make rules like that. Rules about arriving on time to practices and stuff, yes. Rules about personal appearance when there are no similar rules school-wide, no.

IT'S HAIR
but i do think it's ridiculous. clearly the kid didn't care that much about being on the team if he cared about his haircut more. that rule is just plain stupid though - you aren't required to have long, beautiful ponytails to be a cheerleader or bald heads to be a swimmer so why do basketball players need to have short haircuts?
on a side note - i dunno why anyone would want to be on that team and risk being hit in the face with genitalia

Exactly.
And on a sidenote, I love that the Yankees require the players to remain clean-shaven during the season. It really allows me to see if they're good looking or not

i wonder if all the other teams and clubs have rules that arent applied school wide...
ETA: but as long as the coach has the rule over the team and what they can and cant do ... i dont see any reason why he cant make this rule...

Honestly, the kid and the parents were warned. Whether or not the rule is silly, IMO, does not really matter here. They were told "He will be kicked off the team if he doesn't cut his hair" and that's what happened.

I don't think the fact that he didn't cut his hair proves that he doesn't care about being on the team. It's not about hair, it's about the principle of it.
I think the rule is ludicrous and shouldn't be in general. Okay, so the rule was in effect before he joined... were they aware? Were they given a list of the rules? Did he have to sign something saying he agreed to it?
ETA: Were they made aware prior to him joining the team?

I agree. It is voluntary for him to play, not mandatory. They knew the rules and if they go against it, there are consequences. They are teaching their son it is OK to break rules and get away with it without any consequences.

ITA. Rules are rules. What is this telling children?... that there is no need to follow the rules. DH has a dress code at work which includes a clean shave and short cut hair. What are these kids going to do when they enter the real world and get a job with rules and dress codes... go run and whine to Mommy and Daddy when they dont like something I would also like to add LOL

As someone who works in a school, the school rules are the school rules. What are you teaching your child by not adhering? Seriously, that you can do whatever you want and then SUE.
Yeah those are great life skills that will carry the child well through life and make them successful in the work force

Seems discriminatory to me if there aren't any similar requirements for the girls teams. Sounds like sex-stereotyping. Unless the school can articulate a justifiable reason for the requirement, which I doubt they can do, he'll hopefully win his lawsuit.
A shame because he could have filed a complaint through my office, for free, without representation!

But they're not the school rules - they are the basketball coach's rules. That is the part that rubs me the wrong way.
I agree if you break a rule that you knew about you should be punished, but I question the validity of the rule in the first place.

School rules MUST abide by the anti-discrimination statutes, meaning, they must not have a discriminatory impact.
If they don't have the same rule for girls teams, why have it for the boys? If girls are permitted to have long hair on the basketball team, why wouldn't boys be allowed as well?

The article doesn't say, so I'm not sure. I feel like it's possible that the rule may have been there, and they just didn't know about it. I went to Catholic school my whole life, and there were a ton of rules. However, I feel like no one really bothered to read through all of them, so it could be a case like that.
I have no idea though; I'm interested in that question too.

I played sports when I was in school and I always had to sign a form agreeing to the rules, along w/my parents too. I remember we had to wear our hair in a pony tail for track and we had to bring some sort of footwear like a flip flop to all of our swim practices and meets- we couldnt participate if we forgot them.

Couldn't say it better myself.
It is not like the rule didn't exist and the player was not warned in advanced. I am sorry but when I was a kid, if there were restrictions at school, my parents made sure that we obeyed them.

I'm all for abiding by rules, but if they are discriminatory, and a violation of the law, then no, they should not have to adhere to them, even if they were aware of them before they joined the team.

Isn't it different though because the individual coach is making the rules?
Perhaps the school couldn't issue a set of rules that is different for girls and for boys, but it isn't a rule set forth by the school. It's a rule set forth by the leader of a certain group. The girls' coach chooses to not have that rule, but the boys' coach does.
I could be wrong, but I feel like it is different because it is not a school issued policy, it is a team issued policy and therefore, would go by a case to case basis.
