Judge Judy & Shopping Carts - I wanna hear YOUR thoughts on this.

I was watching Judge Judy a few weeks ago on Larry King Live.

She was stating that when SHE was out in a parking lot, people looked at her to make sure she put her cart back to the cart station, because people look to her to do the right thing.

She said it's a responsibility to do so, and if a shopping cart was left & caused damage to a nearby car, you would be held responsible or something.

Now, I get it.

But, if you have a child(ren) with you, and let's say you parked far from the cart section, are you supposed to leave your children in the car to go put it back?

Let's say its POURING raining or, even worse, hail...(i've experienced hail a few times already in the past few years - its possible!) are you supposed to drag your kids to the cart station and THEN put them in the car?

it seems JJ would agree with the latter, but isn't that unreasonable?

This has been on my mind, so I'd love to hear your thoughts.....play nice! no need for this to turn ugly! Chat Icon

Can't you unpack your groceries, bring the cart to the cart station and THEN take your kid out and carry the kid to the car?

Maybe that will work?

Re: Judge Judy & Shopping Carts - I wanna hear YOUR thoughts on this.

Well.. I teach my kids the right thing by making sure we return the cart together.

I can remember once that it was pouring and we were quite a ways from the cart return and I just jammed the cart up on the meridian instead of returning it. Robbie was scandalized.

Kids come first.. but I try to avoid those situations where it's going to be hailing while we are parked 7 miles from the cart return. Chat Icon

yes, all options are doable

but does anyone ever feel a moral purpose to put it in its correct spot?

Re: Judge Judy & Shopping Carts - I wanna hear YOUR thoughts on this.

If I am by myself-the cart always goes to the cart return.

If I am alone with DS, and I am near the cart return, I return it. If I am not near it, I leave it and make sure it is stationary. (I am also usually parked far from other cars).

If it is raining or hailing and I have DS, he goes in the car first, then groceries, and screw the cart.

I do. sort of.

I would just feel terribly if my not putting back the cart led to damage to another person's automobile.

most places (at least that I've seen) have multiple areas for cart return.

I would just put my son in the car and run over to get the cart back. I don't see that as being such a big deal.

I'd let my dog return the cart, I mean that is after all the reason I bring her to the store.

hey you, anyone ever tell you that whenever you post, the margins of the column get shifted?

I think it's important to return the shopping cart and think that I would try to do so if I were faced with that situation. It's been over a year and I haven't been to a shopping center with DD and the car in ages--except for the time I had to use stork parking to bring back all of DD's double Christmas/B-Day gifts. Re: Judge Judy & Shopping Carts - I wanna hear YOUR thoughts on this.

I almost always park in the spot next to a cart return. If I can't and it's pouring rain, I have left it in an open spot. (Only if my son is with me in the pouring rain.) But I will NEVER block a handicapped spot with my cart.

ETA: I go shopping (Walmart or grocery) about 3-4 times per week with DS. In that time I have left the cart in a parking spot maybe 10 times total in 2 1/2 years.

i feel no moral obligation towards grocery carts, or anything to do with grocery carts other than not not take off with a running start with one into the side of someones car. Chat Icon

I look at it like this...if you can get a cart with/without kids in nice/inclimate weather you can put it back also. Is it always convenient? No. But it sucks for the people that get dents in their car because people don't put the carts back.

Re: Judge Judy & Shopping Carts - I wanna hear YOUR thoughts on this.

Personally, I ALWAYS bring it back.

I can't stand when I get to my car & see a cart leaning on it Chat Icon because someone didn't feel like walking it back.

I would love to see someone doing this as I was walking towards my car. Chat Icon

This is just plain out rude & inconsiderate. Even if its pouring rain I return it. JMO

maybe people are just looking to find drama?

why can't anyone just post something they heard a person in the public say and since i've been thinking about it ever since - why can't i post in a public forum to hear what others think without fear of this sounding like it's inventing drama?

why can't anyone post a question for fear that others will take it and run with it?

if i just stick to the home section and ask for curtain reccs, and the food section for recipes, i'm going to never expand my own box of thoughts.
