Just a question about being admitted to the hospital
Does anyone know...
if you go to the doctors office and they tell you that you they want you to go to the hospital to be admitted, do you have to go through the Emergency Room to be admitted?
Or is there another way to be admitted?
Is that protocol? Or is that only how some hospitals work?

DH works at a hospital.
He's pretty sure you don't have to go to the Emergency Room, that you can go directly to being admitted.

Usually if you go to the Dr. for something and they send you to the hospital it's done thru the ER.
I hope everything is ok.
Of course it depends on the illness or situation.

Yes, absolutely .... it completely depends on what the illness is. Some things require more urgent care than others.

A little backround:
My mother has been having issues with a blood clot.
She was in the hospital a couple of weeks ago - she was in there for about a week. They sent her home after the week and told her not to be doing anything. Well, she has been on blood thinners. She went back to the doctor cause the pain has moved up her leg.
They told her to go to Good Sam and that she has to be admitted. They told her to go through ER. Now I don't know if when you get admitted through GS that it is through the ER? Or she has to sit in the ER and then be admitted.
A couple of weeks ago, she got a bed in ER and had to wait for a room, she didn't get her blood thinner until she got a room.
If she has to sit in the ER again and not get anything - then whats the point in sitting in the ER?
So I was curious if anyone knew

It's better she is waiting to be admitted thru ER in case she need immediate help.
WHen My Dad was told to go to the hospital at his Dr. appt. they told him to go straight to the ER. He had congestive heart failure and it looked like he was on the verge of a heart attack.
Blood clots like that are nothing to take a chance on
She should get there asap. Prayers for your Mom

I just had surgery and the Dr. thought I might have a blood clot. I went to the surgon who performed the surgery. He sent me to the admitting department. I had a sonogram of my leg. Thankfully, I did not have DVT but I did not have to go to the ER for the ultrasound. The Dr. wrote a scrip and I brought that to admitting. The scrip said STAT on it so they performed it very quickly.
ETS: If she is already there now with the blood clot the ER is the place to go. What I was told was that they need to give lovenox as a shot for 5 days and then it can be a pill, but I am not a doctor. I hope everything works out.

She needs to go now! Tell them the situation and then they can contact your Dr. The ER knows this is a serious
problem.

She is there - she is in the ER last I heard.
She went to the doctor this evening and she went home got a couple of things and then went to GS.
I haven't heard from them - but I know she was probably admitted to the ER. But that is as much as I know.
Like I said, I am more concerned of whether she be in the ER or be admitted into a room.
I never knew that when being admitted to the hospital, you had to sit in the ER first.
They know she has a blood clot - they found out today that they don't think the medicine they were giving her was working.

You can be admitted to the hospital without going through the ER. They call is a "direct admit".
However, if you need tests, you will get them much much faster being considered and "emergency" in the ER than getting routine tests as an inpatient.

With a situation like your Mom's it's best she is in the care of the Dr's in the ER. THey will then transfer her to a room. If it wasn't a condition like this and the DR wanted to have the patient admitted then it would be set up to check in at the hospital admissions.

The Dr' sent her so if they pull that crap again she needs to insist they call him
If she was to have an issue while there they would take care of her

I hate Good Sam hospital. My Grandmother has spent so much time there and I have had to speak to them about a problem each and every time. It sounds like she's in the ER, which is where she needs to be. The best thing to do is stay on top of the staff. I have found it to be the only way to get them to do anything there.

Take charge over her condition! Be agressive with her care if they aren't taking it seriously!

Call the ER and see whats going on! You can be assertive over the phone!

I actually just spoke to my dad.
He said that is how they seem to do it at Good Sam.
But he said that they are being much more assertive with her this time.
So I will hear more in the morning.
I am just so burnt of all that has been going on around here lately. I have had enough now. It keeps knocking me down a couple of pegs

you have to advocate for her even by phone. If you are unhappy with the hospital, get her out of there asap.
I can't even go into how strongly I feel about this. I wish I would have pulled my brother out of the first hospital. St. Francis saved his life.
She should go to St. Francis asap. Please try and get her there. I know it's not convenient for you but it's the best for cardiac issues. I know a doctor there and I can give you a number to help get you in.
I don't care if she doesn't want to go..convince her. Don't have regrets.
