It was there insurance that made the choice for them. Not the pedi..

This!
I find the op's post to be pretty misleading, its not up to the Pediatrician, its the insurance! IMO if you love the Pediatrician this should NOT be a deciding factor. I take DS to the same office I went to as a child, I got the finger prick way back when, now DS had to go to a lab. I don't think its such an inconvenience that it would make me change practices,,,, yes DS was not happy during the blood being taken and yes it was traumatic but I don't think it would be that much of a different experience if it were a finger prick.

How can my opinion on something be misleading???
This post wasn't really for the BTDT mom's who are already attached to their peds....it was sort of a shout out to all new mom's-to-be out there.

I know that's why it's misleading b/c you're recommending that 1st time Moms include this in their decision making process, they are going to go to their prospective Ped and base their decision on this, which shouldn't be a dealbreaker in most cases it will rule out a LOT of Ped offices, and it won't even be the fault of the Ped itself, it may just be based on their insurance.

My ped did do the 1 yr stuff at the office. It was a finger prick but then he took this little tube and sucked up some blood. He did two tests with the blood on little machines in the office. Neither was for sugar though the machine reminded me of that.

We had to go to a lab for blood work for DD#1 - and I did learn the hard way that some people are better at taking blood from a baby than others - you should always ask if there is someone who has experience taking blood from a baby and also make sure that you don't go during lunch time - Its a 3 person job - mom, Lab worker#1 and Lab worker #2. I went there when just one person was on and it was a nightmare. We had to wait for the 3rd person to get back from lunch...
