Just back from the doctor
Saw my ob/gyn for my infertility appt. For the last seven years (since about age 28) I have had very irregular periods... maybe 3-4 times a year with very long cycles... as much as 59 days. I've been charting since November only one chart this year shows a possible ovulation. For years now, years, I knew something was wrong and always wanted to be tested but I was just dismissed with "when you want to have children..."
He looked at my charts and said, "Oh yes, you are clearly not ovulating." Ummmm, thanks but I knew that.
I'll be going for bloodwork (with fasting) on Day 3-5 whenever that maybe. He's planning on putting me on Metaformin. He's going to consult with an RE about my case.
He said "We're going to try to get you a Christmas present"
Does anyone have any experience with Metformin?
TIA

I don't have any advice about Metformin.
But I want to say that I am happy that you will be getting the answers that you need.

I am sorry that you have the irregular periods but I am hopeful that as your Dr. said--you may be able to have an extra special Christmas gift.

Re: Just back from the doctor
Thanks ladies.
DH is on a week long business trip to CA and I can't get in touch with my best friend in MA so I think I'm more depressed about it than I normally would be.
It was hard to come home to an empty house with such news.
Thanks for the hugs... they are the only ones I can get right now.
Right back at ya You ladies are the best!

Re: Just back from the doctor
As Michal has said, I too am on Metformin and the side effects STINK! I was so sick but I finally got my meds upped to 1500 mg a day, my doctor wants me at 2000 a day but I think I will stay right where I am for now. I am always running to the bathroom (sorry tmi), I threw up twice while on it and I get headaches. BUT...it looks like I ovulated last month for the first time in YEARS and I had only been on it for not even a month. So I am hoping its doing its job. Fm me if you have any other questions!

I don't know anything about Metformin but I wanted to send you some hugs...
Have you considered getting a second opinion? What about a drug like Clomid?

According to my bloodwork numbers from a year ago it looks like the reason why I am not ovulating is due to "insulin type resistiant polycystic ovaries". I do not have full blow PCOS and do not lead to lose a lot of weight.
My doctor said he'd rather cure the problem (Metaformin) than send my system into overdrive (Clomid) which might get me pregnant but won't solve the underlying cause of my annovulatory periods which he thinks is slight insulin resistance. I'm not diabetic but the insulin in my system is overriding my hormonal balance.
I just did a search on line regarding Metaformin and the side effects look pretty unpleasant. Even stroke and liver problems.... GREAT my Dad had a stroke at 57.
Does anyone even know anyone who did not have bad side effect?
I only see posts about the abdominal bleeding and other side effects.
And to think... all of those hundreds and hundreds of dollars I wasted on the BCP for all of those years
DH has an aunt who is up on all of the problems with pharmaceutical drugs.... she's retired and spends her whole day reading research on them. She's a big believer in natural cures. I'd like to ask her opinion but don't want to tell her we are TTC.

Re: Just back from the doctor
Someone on the site where I keep my blog does (or did?) have full-blown PCOS. She was on Meformin. Don't remember specifics about side effects BUT she is pregnant and nearly through her first trimester.
ETA- maybe someone you know can recommend a good homeopathic doctor?

Re: Just back from the doctor
I'm right there with you {{HUGS}}
I don't have PCOS, but I'm not ovulating. All my tests have some back normal, yet my cycles are extremely long and no O (insulin levels are fine).
My doctor is prescribing Clomid. The first 50mg cycle did nothing, so this time around we're trying 100mg.
Never tried Metformin - good luck!

Re: Just back from the doctor
I've been on it for almost 3 months and the side-effects are much less. Still some stomach issues--but not too bad. But, still no ovulation--the doc wants me to do this another month or so before trying clomid for the same reasons as yours. FM me with any questions.

Re: Just back from the doctor
First of all, I want to say, Theresa, that I believe your doctor should be commended. It seems as if he has much more knowledge and cares more than many ob/gyns. Metformin, does have side effects but it helps the body as well. I am not a fan of meds...but I know tons of women on metformin. Not only have their insulin levels decreased but their body started functioning correctly and so many of them have beautiful pregnancies/ babies to prove the improvement. So many ob/gyns prescribe clomid when there is no O. They really don't go much further than that. Metformin, may make you ovulate on your own, or you may need a combo of clomid or femara/metformin.
If you are really opposed to the med....chromium can also help reduce the insulin level. It is a mineral. You can buy chromium over the counter at any drug store (cvs, etc)

Re: Just back from the doctor
Wow...T, I could have written your post exactly and probably have when I was first diagnosed as well. We have the SAME exact problem. As much as the side effects are sometimes sucky, I am pretty sure its helping me a lot in a lot of areas including ovulating. Next month will be the real test to see if I get a period "on time." I have to go back to my reproductive specialist in the beginning of October to see if my levels have changed at all.
Also..theres a wonderful site called soulcysters.com about pcos but they have an entire thread on Metformin. From people taking it because of their pcos to people who dont even have it at all. Its wonderful and very informative. Fm me if you need anything!

Re: Just back from the doctor
Ladies thanks for all of the information and well wishes.
I spoke to DH's aunt last night. She is a retired nurse practioner and spends all day everyday researching drugs, interactions, homeopathic remedies etc. .
She was dissapointed that the prescription for bloodwork wasn't more comprehensive. She wants me to also have my thyriod checked. She couldn't believe that my doctor wasn't running a A1C hemoglobin test on me... only testing my FSH, LH and fasting Serum glocose test.
As these tests require fasting, and I will have to take the morning off from work, I'd rather get a battery of tests done. I also have two house closings coming up which I will have to miss some work for. Add to that this situation and I am trying to greatly reduce the days I have to take. I teach high school so it's not like I can go in late and just stay late.
For any of you who had to have comprehensive bloodwork, what other tests should I have?
Thanks again.

I just wanted to send some hugs and wish you the best that the metformin does it's job and you get a great Christmas present.
As for the bloodwork, I also was sent for the same work up as someone that is pregnant (allt he genetic testing, etc) maybe that's one you could have done also. Good luck!

Re: Just back from the doctor
I have no experience with Metformin- but I know how you feel with the long, irregular cycles... I have them too!
I am going to my regular doctor for a check up next thursday and will bring up the irregularity... my OB/GYN and PCP are in the same suite (Beth Israel in NYC) so they "share" information and the blood lab...
I have a feeing I"m going to be making my way to metformin too- my OB told me to come in if not pregnant in 6 months... October is 6 months.
The long cycles have gotten so frustrating that I don't really even chart anymore- take my temp every other day to see what the "trend" is...

Re: Just back from the doctor
Theresa --- I wish I had some information for you but alas, I don't. I hope that you don't stress too much....I know it is hard when you have to take time off of work...and that your Dr. finds the right solution.
If you need a friend, give me a call or stop by on the way home from work -- I am so close to you!! We can take a nice walk and you can vent, or have a glass of TJ's non-alcoholic wine on the deck...I know it must be so hard for you esp. with DH being away.....
Hang in there, the important thing is to be moving forward!!
