Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

Just wondering for the future...
Where is your room in relation to your child's room (or children's rooms)

We have a cape..Master bedroom on 1st floor and smaller bedroom next to it that we use as an office. There are two decent sized bedrooms upstairs (but not as large as our bedroom since it is not dormered). Just wondering what we will do when kids come along some day.

I have a cap also but we have 1bed rm upstairs which is the biggest so that's ours and then two bed rms down and those are the children's. I would of liked to have all the bed rms on the same floor but that's just not how our house is. Maybe in the future.

When they were babies were they downstairs or in your room?

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

I grew up in a house that sounds as if it had the same layout....though it was before the necessity of home offices. When we were babies (and through about 2 years old), we were in the room right next to my parents. Once we hit 2 (or so) we each moved upstairs and got our own rooms.

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

we live in an expanded ranch ( ranch with walkout basement with high ceilings thats basically a second floor, not so much a basement) we have 2 bedrooms on the main floor ( ours and future kids), and then two on the lower floor ( one is a guest room, and the other we have set up a library). if we were ever to have more than 1 kid ( which we probably won't being that i can't have bio kids and we'll have to adopt), one of them would have to move down to the lower level, or we would add a master suite over the kitchen.... it doesn' bother us so much, we'll deal with it when the time comes ( one of the nice things about not being able to have bio kids is that they're won't be any surpises! LOL)
BUT... i grew up in a cape where the master bedroom was upstairs, and my sister and i had bedrooms on the main floor. we moved there when i was 2 and my sister was a baby... it all worked out fine. aside from the fact that my parents get up super early and we could hear them walking around in the mornings- lol

I have a hi-ranch. There are 3 bedrooms at the end of the hall. One to the left (our MB), one straight on (DD room) and one to the right (DS room). We also have a 4th bedroom, which is on the lower level, but it's storage right now, soon to be an office/guest room. I don't think I would ever put my kids in a room on the lower level, while we were all upstairs. Until he's at least 18 Chat Icon The rooms are all close, no need for baby monitors!

We have a split but this is a similar set up for us. I grew up in a cape and my parents had the bigger bedroom downstairs and when my brother and I were very small, we shared the smaller room. When we were a bit older, we were each in the upstairs bedrooms and my parents remained in the downstairs room. I have a friend with a cape and she & her DH are upstairs with her 4 year old across the hall. Her 17 yr old DD is in one of the downstairs BRs. I would never personally be comfortable with that set up.

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We have 2 BR upstairs and 1 on the first floor. The boys are in the other room upstairs with us.

I definitely want to move before we have a third kid bc I'm not comfortable moving one downstairs or giving the kids both upstairs bedrooms.

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We have a splanch & all the bedrooms are upstairs. The room that we will make into our "nursery" is directly in front of ours. Our plan is to keep the "nursery" up until we are done having kids. Our master is in the back of the house. There is one other bedroom across from ours & that will become the first born's room once they are out of the crib. Depending on how many kids we have (have room for 3), will determine where the other kids go..

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We have a cape and our bedroom is downstairs. We just moved our baby upstairs this past weekend. Our room is too small too fit her crib and the extra room upstairs is too small for us. I have come to realize that is the one thing I really dislike about our house and never gave it much thought when buying it. The plus side is our daughter seems to enjoy being upstairs, and we are makin g full use of our monitor. In our next house I will definately consider all bedrooms being on the same floor

Our master is a converted attic. The kids rooms are downstairs. LIterally, my bed is near the steps and right after the steps going downstairs are their rooms. It doesn't bother me, that what monitors are for!

We have a cape with 2br upstairs and 2brs on the first floor.

We have a dormer and 2 baths so we decided to have our bedroom upstairs. If/when we have kids, they will live in the room across the hall.

We're hoping eventually to put on an addition/redormer in which we're hoping to add a third bedroom room upstairs.

We have a ranch - the current guest room would be a nursery and there's one room in between (our office).

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We are in a town house but is is shaped like a center hall colonial. Our bedroom is near the stairs and the baby is in the room closest to ours, down the hall. The guest room/office is the farthest down the hall at the end.

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We have a levit style cape. There were 2 bedrooms down (probably much like your situation - a large MBR and a small office type room). The house is rear dormerd so the 2 bedrooms upstairs are decent sized - not huge but good enough.
We converted the downstairs MBR into a dining room by removing a wall and the smaller room is our "media room" (or so DH likes to call it).
We use the largest bedroom upstairs as ours and the other is plenty big for a nursery (could even get by with 2 kids in there which I'd rather do than have one downstairs by him /herself).
We eventually plan to front dormer or at least put another room over the gargage.

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We have a 3-bedroom ranch, all of the bedrooms are in the back of the house at the end of the hallway. DD's room is at the very end and faces the backyard; the fish has a view of the pool!! Chat Icon

Then our bedroom is on the side, and the 3rd bedroom is next to it. We're currently using that room as an office but when the time comes it will be a nursery, so our room will be in the middle.

I would have a basinet in my rm for night time but they only stayed in that for about 1-2wks then when in there crib down stairs. The first couple of nights I would sleep on the couch because I was too nervous but then I just used my monitor and went back in my bed upstairs. Everything went good and still is. But as a parent you need to do what you are most comfy with.

Re: Just curious about Master bedrooms in relation to children's room

We have a colonial and all 4 bedrooms are upstairs. We'd probably use one of the two middle rooms in our house, so they are close to the stairs and to our room.
