Just curious...re biting and daycare
This isn't my DS, its my nephew.
He is a biter, and pretty bad too. He left marks on my niece while we were there...he is 18 months old and in daycare full time and she said he has bitten other kids and she has signed numerous incident reports.
What is the protocol on this? They aren't in NY, but I was just curious...

Re: Just curious...re biting and daycare
I think it depends. DD has bitten a few of her classmates (maybe like 5-6 times since March). I was so worried that there would be some sort of disciplinary action- but when I spoke to her teachers, they weren't concerned because the biting doesn't seem to come from a place of anger or provocation. It seems to happen mostly when she is teething.
I mean, obviously if he is biting because he's mad, frustrated, etc- I guess that would be a different scenario.
I don't think I helped at all.....lol.

Re: Just curious...re biting and daycare
In NYS you can have a child leave a center as long as it is in your policies and procedures that the parents have a copy of.
IMHO I think that should be an EXTREME last resort. At 18 months biting is very normal (even though it is super frustrating for parents) I would suggest either a shadow for the kid or maybe a smaller group setting. Also at 18 months if they think his speech isn't up to par they could also do an evaluation for speech. I would say 99.99% of biting is sheer frustration for the child not being able to communicate with his peers and adults. HTH

Re: Just curious...re biting and daycare
Mrs. Flatbread just posted about a 14 month old in her DS's daycare that was constantly biting. After getting an aide to help with no success, they kicked him out of the daycare.

ITA with this! If they haven't tried an aid/shadow, thats what should be done first!
