Just got in a car accident need advice
I literally just got in a car accident an hour ago. Need your help.
I have never been in a car accident so I am sorry I seem really pathetic.
Needless to say it was my fault, the cops gave us our paper work and drove off. I have no idea what to do next. I am 35, he is 18. Both of our cars are 14 and 15 years old. His bumper is a little off, mine in more damaged than his. I kept apologizing. He was with 3 people in his car. The first thing he did was punch the road sign when he got out and was like "My kid sister is the car". But they were all between the ages of 15-17. I feel horrible as it is. Do I call the insurance company or do I wait for the other driver to call? My husband is not home. So I want to seem prepared, thanks for advice.

if your car is damaged, call your insurance company and tell them, if you want to get it fixed through them. if not, you are under no obligation to call EITHER insurance company. if the other drivers wants his car fixed and wants to go through your insurances it is his responsibility to contact them.
if he tries to contact you, refer him to yoru insurance company.

if you filed a police report you MUST call your own insurance company. and he is supposed to call his. you will speak with a rep and then will get assigned an agent in a day or so and they will take over and guide you through. if your car is driveable, it's easier to have the adjuster come look at the damage at your home or work before bringing it to a repair shop. if you need the name of a repair shop, i have one that my family has always been happy with.
if there is more than 1,000 worth of damage, the ins co will also send you a form that you need to fill out and mail to albany.
nys is no fault so pretty much regardless who is at fault, your ins will go up a bit. but after you make a police report, contact the ins co and let them take ogver. that's what you pay the big bucks for.

if you didn't file a police report, you don't have to call your insurance company unless you are looking to get them to fix it.

I am ok. Just feeling horrible.
My car is drivable. It's just missing a piece of the bumper. But other than that it seems to be ok. And his truck just had the bumper messed up a little.

I did call the cops only because he punched the sign and started yelling at me. Other than that I wouldn't have cared.

Yes, contact the claims dept of your insurance company immediately. I'm sorry he reacted that way, it's called an accident for a reason you clearly didn't mean to hit him. I hit a parked car once and the owner of the car came out screaming and I started balling and couldn't calm down and then he went into his house to get me water because he felt bad. Anyway, you probably won't even have to talk to him at all. Did you get his insurance information? Your insurance companies should take care of it all

Accidents happen. That's what insurance is for!
The fact that there was 3 other people in the car makes me think he was showing off when punching the sign. Don't worry too much about it.
Be prepared for anything come tomorrow though. You never know what his mommy and daddy are going to tell him when he gets home.

By law, you are required to notify your insurance when you get into an accident, whether its your fault or not . I would do so to cover myself (unless it was a minor collision).

I did call last night. And first thing this morning I called my agent who has not called me back yet. Just waiting on what to do next. I don't plan on getting my car fixed. Like I said, my car is 14 years old. The other car was 13 years old. I am so tired. I just kept reliving it in my sleep or lack there of. The more I think about it, the more I know I did not see them coming. I really do think they were speeding but my front bumper hit them. I have dual air bags and they didn't even go off. It was more first accident and hopefully it will be my last one.

Honestly - I would also stop saying it's your fault. It was just an accident - things happen. And young drivers with people in the car have a high % of the accidents out there....maybe they were partly at fault to? You didn't really say what happened.....

it was an ACCIDENT... I'm sure you didn't do it on purpose...
THANK GOD you filed a police report b/c god knows what that idiot would *claim* if you didn't...

Just wanted to add that the best thing to do in this situation is to contact your insurance company - not just for the damages to the car, but in case the other people get some shady "advice" and start claiming they have injuries like whiplash or trauma. There is a big difference between notifying your carrier of an accident and claiming for damages. It's usually the dollar amount paid out in an accident that determines how much your rates go up. Also, don't be afraid to ask the adjuster ANY questions - that's what they are there for.

Actually, this statement is incorrect. I am only clarifying because I work in the auto insurance industry and this is a common misconception.
No Fault is coverage for your medical bills under your policy if you are injured in an accident. It has nothing to do with determing fault in an accident or rates.
If you are found to be at fault more than 50% (meaning you are either 100% at fault or share liability greater than 50% in the accident), and over $1000 is paid out under the claim, then typically your rates will increase.
