What Would You Do? Car Advice Needed...
I drive a 1997 Honda Civic and will be looking for a new car in the next year. I have no idea what car I want next, but am thinking maybe a Ford Escape or some smaller SUV.
We may have the opportunity to buy my grandma's Lexus as it is coming off lease in November. It is a 2004 and will have less than 10,000 miles on it - my grandma is also the original owner, only other person to drive it is my mom. The car has been in one accident.
The buy-out price is $18,000 and change. I have driven the car many times and am used to it and like it.
My uncle doesn't think we should buy it - doesn't think it's worth it.
Don't know which direction to go in - a brand new car would be really nice too, but we would be spending more than 18K anyway. Here's the chance to buy a safe, powerful, "luxurious" car that we couldn't afford otherwise, but not new, etc.
What do you think - really don't know what to do!
Much thanks!

Re: What Would You Do? Car Advice Needed...
Which Lexus is it?
ETA: Personally, I would do it. The Kelly Blue Book Value is about $24K which is $6K more than you are paying. That's taking the accident into account. If it was a minor accident then it's no big deal. The only reason I wouldn't do it is if it was in a major accident and had to have the frame repaired or major mechanical repairs. You will not find another car with that low mileage and you know the history of the car for $18K.
Good luck!!!

The Lexus is still better than any new car you could get for $18,000, plus it will probably last longer. Compounded by the fact that it only has 10000 miles.
I would buy the Lexus.

I agree with this! My only hesitation would be if the accident was major. Lexus is part of Toyota, I believe - so you could probably go 100k miles without any major issues otherwise.

Re: What Would You Do? Car Advice Needed...
I'm not 100% sure which it is, has to double check - I believe it's the ES300 though - not a coupe or sport model.
Not sure the level of accident and the repairs - have to find that out also and I'll report back - lol - stupid question though - if the damage/repairs were major, why wouldn't it be a good idea to buy? I know - stupid question, but I really don't know the answer.
Thanks!
I know people say it's not smart to buy your car off lease, but since it's not our car, we didn't make any of the payments, lose any of the money.
Does anyone know if you still get any type of coverage/warranty from the dealership - that's a concern too - that a new car would have all the coverages...

Re: What Would You Do? Car Advice Needed...
If the accident was major, you would risk costly repairs down the road. Generally, you can extend all the warranties through the dealer when you buy the car.
BTW, normally I would say new over used also, but in this case you know the history of the car and that's really important. Plus, the mileage is really low for a 2004 - it should have about 36,000 miles on it.

Costly repairs b/c the repaired parts could go bad?
I think the big thing for us IS the mileage!

It's a cream puff and you know who drove it and you know the history. I like the idea.
The only thing I don't like is that it's coming from someone who is close to you.
What happens if something goes wrong with the car and you found out something was misrepresented to you. Then, are you mad at your family?
Families have broken up over money issues.
Although, it is tempting because it's a great car with very low miles.
Good luck in your decision.

I would spend $30-$40 and have a mechanic check it out. they will be able to tell if it's been in an accident and also might be able to tell you if the damage was repaired properly.
then make your decision

That's why I need to question my uncle and see why he doesn't think it's a good idea. I am very close with my grandma and g-d forbid there was a problem with the car - I would never be mad at her. If anything, she'd probably be upset and want to pay for the repair...

We prob would do that - we do already know it was in an accident and the car was repaired by Lexus.

If the car only has 10 thousand miles on it, it's practically new.....being you know the history of the car, and you like it, I would go for it...

Yep, talk to your uncle..there may be more to the story of the car.

If your uncle never drove the car, why doesn't he think it's a good deal?
I think $18K for a Lexus with 10K miles on it is a no brainer. I agree with the others - get it checked out by a mechanic. Sounds like a no brainer to me.

I agree with the ladies who say to buy it. It's practically brand new and is a quality car. If the accident wasn't major and there's no damage to the frame of the car, buy it!

Re: What Would You Do? Car Advice Needed...
It does not matter what kind of car it is, if it has been in an accident the value is decreased. $18K for a car that is not "good as new" is a bit high.

Re: What Would You Do? Car Advice Needed...
I think it depends on your comfort level here.
$18,000 for a Lexus is AWESOME, but you don't want to blow a lot of money if something went wrong with the repairs (from the accident).
I agree, you should talk to your uncle and find out why he thinks it's not worth it.
Good luck either way!!
