Just got off the phone with National Grid
I called to inquire about a possible conversion from oil to gas. We need a new oil tank and hot water heater so instead of doing that I wanted to see if a conversion to gas was possible since DH and I both prefer gas. Unfortunately the nearest gas line is 675 feet away and they said it would cost $41,400 to bring the gas line to my house....so we decided to do it. YEAH RIGHT!! are they nuts? I never heard of it costing this much. I'm so bummed.

LOL, at first I thought you were serious. That's too bad. When we moved into our house we called to find out about gas. Luckily, the line was already down our street. Hmm, you could go and ask your neighbors if they want gas. I think if the entire street agrees, NG has to do it for free. I think. I could be wrong.

Re: Just got off the phone with National Grid
My line is about 200 ft away and they said it would cost $10,000. Not doing that either.

yeah they said if you get enough people willing to convert they would bring down the price but I'm not about to start knocking on my neighbors doors. We're new to the block.

Re: Just got off the phone with National Grid
It is costing us $2k to run it to the other side of the house. We are actually having the gas line go all the way to the grill

Re: Just got off the phone with National Grid
It IS ridiculous!! I had called them a few months ago about a house we were looking to purchase, I ran into the same situation. They said it would cost $35,000 for that particular home. The only time they do it for free is if a gas line is within 100 feet of your home.

I agree that the price is inflated, but you have to look at it from NG's perspective. If they are going to put in all the labor to have a new line put down the street, they want to make sure that there will be customers there to make up for the costs. So, if there isn't a large interest in getting the line put down, they want someone to cover the cost. Unfortunately, NG takes advantage of this and jacks up the price.

Re: Just got off the phone with National Grid
You would think National Grid would do the knocking on doors to get people to convert. I guess they don't need the $$$$$
