Just saw a big red fox run through my yard!
I have heard these were on LI but I have never seen one. I was pulling in my driveway and I see a BIG red fox (probably weighed about 20 lbs or so) run across the street onto my lawn. He turned, stopped to look at me and stood there for a minute. Then ran off. He was big and it was crazy to see a fox running by! Are they like raccoons, where if you see them during the day, they may be rabid? Times like this I wish I had a camera phone (antiquated old phone still here) b/c it was an amazing sight~~! Luckily my dogs didn't cross paths with him.

I can't answer your question about seeing them during the day. But I remember seeing one last summer during the day at the arboretumin Oakdale.
It shocked the heck out of me...I didn't even have a chance to pick up my camera and take a picture.
But I KNOW what I saw.

I've seen them at night a few times in the West Sayville Oakdale area...not sure about if they are nocturnal...call animal control and ask them...I would think they would want to know if a possibly rabid fox was running around your neighborhood...

I just read online that they are nocturnal re hunting, but not uncommon to see them during the day. Maybe I will call to see more specifically re LI.

I've seen them in the area, more so in the early morning. I wouldn't sweat it, considering how it responded to you...froze, then took off which is a pretty normal reaction. It may be looking for food for it's pups if it's a female.

Okay just googled this and they are a huge part of our ecosystems because they are one of the few predatory hunters on long island (the rest are birds). Hopefully we all start seeing a few more of them since they have been declining in numbers since 2008

I've only seen one in my area in the 7years we've lived here. My dad lives in Northport in the "pit" since the early 80's and we always see foxes there,even during the day.

When I first bought my house I read a post about red foxes in my neighborhood and I freaked out and told DH that we shouldn't let the dogs out at night. He texted me that he saw a red fox in the yard and included this picture:

I read that if you have small dogs or cats, do not allow them to be loose, esp around dusk if foxes are in the area. That def can be a little scary. This fox was so big that it could def pick up a chihuahua or a small cat. For sure. Not harmful so much to a human but a small pet, no doubt.

i walk through huntignton bay and saw one this morning and last week - they have been around that area for years- i used to see them on the bus in high school
they tend to be out in the early morning and at dusk when you see them - they are fine at those times
the ones on the north shore are pretty used to humans and will definetly watch you but usually from a safe distance

at 230 i would report it - that is not a normal time to see them
