I'd LOVE to see how people would feel if it was THEIR yard, with THEIR KIDS in THEIR HOME when some STRANGER was in THEIR BACKYARD in the DARK.

The posters of this site crack me the FCUK up. Chat Icon

Please, for the LOVE OF GOD, get off your high horses and STOP acting like this wouldn't bother the ever loving SHIT out of you ALL.

Someone was in her yard.
People are LOOTING.
What makes you think it can't escalate from there?
Then again, OP, maybe if it escalates THEN you'll have a GOOD reason to call 911 according to some posters. Chat Icon Chat Icon

she thought someone was in her yard BEFORE she slept the whole night...then woke up, nothing missing, realized they were there for her power and THEN called the cops...not like she feared for her life in the moment

ETA: not saying i wouldn't be uncomfortable...I would...but not enough to involve the cops in a time like this.

anyway, there are so many other things going on right now...we shouldn't be picking each other apart...I just hope people understand that every 911 call made is taking away from someone else who may be in dire need of assistance so it should be a serious situation.

I don't really see where people are saying it wouldn't bother them. People are taking issue with her asking the woman on the phone to "step up patrols" and then calling the woman nasty when she told her no, the police don't have time for that. The OP can't see why the woman would say that. How could she not get that? Chat Icon

Because she was fearing for her life.

I get that the police have a LOT to deal with and that this ONE particular incident in the scheme of things is probably really the gnat on the pimple of the ASS of the bigger picture, but this woman and her husband were frightened so they called 911 and asked for patrols to be stepped up. Right, wrong or indifferent, I think that's a natural reaction and anyone who says that wouldn't be their first reaction is FULL OF SHIT.

Why doesn't everyone get that? Chat Icon

i think "fearing for her life" is a huge exaggeration. When someone loots your home at gunpoint...THAT is fearing for your life. When you hear something in your yard KNOWING their is looting going on...go to sleep the whole night anyway...then wake up to find nothing is stolen, damaged and nobody was harmed and all they did was plug into an outlet...that is HARDLY fearing for your life.

just sayin'

I'll give you that, I was a bit dramatic with the fearing for their lives Chat Icon

But, I do still think people would be freaked out, I agree maybe not everyone would call 911 but who are any of us to quantify the emotions of others?

And again, as things get worse, who's to say what can happen?

I think the "what ifs" take over and that's where the fear comes in.

Hopefully her visitors dont' come back looking for more.

I agree 100% and i can't believe so many people are criticizing the OP for her reaction. I am blown away by it, actually.

NO ONE should be in my yard, in the dark, unless they have permission. It has nothing to do with using the electricity. It's the fact that someone was on her property, uninvited.

Last i heard, trespassing was not legal simply b/c there was a big storm and people don't have power.

People are allowed to feel differently. Maybe for some of you if you woke up the next day and see that someone had used an outdoor outlet to charge their phone you would call the police, not all of us would, doesn't make us liars or on high horses. People are allowed to have different reactions. Knowing the police are dealing with death and destruction right now I personally would not call the police if I was in this situation, it would bother me and I would be on high alert but I would not have called the cops, sorry if this offends people so much Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Just read this now and omg I would have a huge issue with someone trespassing on my property using my property. Shut that breaker off so they don't come back. Also makes me think what else of yours might they help themselves to?

I try to stay out of these threads but this is unreal. OP heard a noise but wasn't concerned enough to check it out. In the morning they saw their gate was open and assumed someone stole their electricity. I don't have an issue with calling the cops but what did you want them to do . Investigate this? To be honest if they sent extra people to patrol your area I would be so mad. There aren't even enough cops to direct traffic at major intersections on sunrise highway.

I would call just to make a record of it in case anything more happened - but I wouldn't dare ask them to step up patrols at this time.

However I would think if you said that, it was in a heated moment - like more reactionary, you know?

Re: Just upset: Sandy related

Didn't read this thread but to the op I would be very upset. Today I discovered something was stolen from my yard last night. I have power and leave a light on inside. I hope no one was on my property to use the electric and then helped themselves to my stuff. Very wrong and scary.

There is nothing right about sneaking in a back yard at night! There are waaaay to many places and people offering these services. Even the poster would allow it during the day, if they asked. No excuse

For me, it is NOT that she has a problem with someone being in her backyard, yes THAT IS creepy. It is the fact that she called the cops (not in and of itself terrible) but with all that is going on, called and asked them to and expected them to step up patrols in her area with all of the other WAY more important things they have to do right now. That is really ballsy in my opinion.

That and she was actually angry and couldn't believe that the woman on the phone had the audacity to tell her, even if rudely, that they have more important things to do right now.

I don't think it was ballsy at all but I do think it was silly as patrols are not even set up when a robbery (indoors) occurs. I don't think it a big deal at all though that the police were called and a request was made since it probably wouldn't have happened pre-sandy anyway!
People get upset when they are violated and that is a very creepy thing to have happen so the op did what she though was right.
