I will be the odd man out here and say this, times are tough and things suck out there BUT that doesn't give people a right to violate anyone's privacy. I haven't had power in days, my cell phones all died and I sat in my car trying to get a bit of a charge so I could stay in touch. I would never think to just waltz into someone's yard and help myself to their electricity.

In the grand scheme of things, I know using ones electrical outlet is not a big deal but honestly, people need to respect everyone's homes, space, and personal property regardless of how bad things are. We should all be using common courtesy and consideration towards our fellow neighbor, specially in tough times. Nobody is entitled to just start helping themselves to anything regardless of their own situation. Most people are willing to help, you just have to ask. To just take, that is not right.

So to the OP, yea.........I would be upset someone was in my yard too and not because they used my electrical power but because its creepy having someone sneak around your house. Chat Icon

Chat Icon just because people do not have electricity does not give anyone the right to abandon rules of society. I experienced hurricane Andrew ( one of the worst in history) and had no power for 22 days and we never stole electricity from anyone nor did we act like savages. It is not okay, they should have asked!

I would be upset too. Desperate or not, they were trespassing. And it's not like there aren't other options to get some power. I saw plenty of businesses yesterday that had signs welcoming people to charge their phones, etc. in their outlets. Also, I saw friends posting FB pics at the Library that were powering up. There are other options before sneaking into someone's backyard in the middle of the night.

To the OP-I don't blame you for being upset. It would freak me out that there were strangers in my backyard. That being said, what bothers me about this post is when you say that "you live in a good neighborhood" Are you more entitled to security or police presence than someone who doesn't live in a "good neighborhood"? It sounds like you were upset that the police didn't drop anything to patrol your neighborhood and make sure that people aren't using your outlets. Police are needed all over the island for so many things, in "good" areas and in "bad" areas and all the "in between" areas. I know they are trying their best, but they have to prioritze things, based on security needs. People are fist fighting at gas stations, looting, etc. They are going to prioritize based on level of danger, not level of neighborhood.

ALL I WAS ASKING FOR FROM THE POLICE WAS A STEP UP IN PATROLS THE NEXT THING IS GOING TO BE LOOTING, STEALING ETC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Just upset: Sandy related

So you have a right to be more upset than someone who lives in a different neighborhood because they are more used to crime?

Do you see what I am saying? You are insinuating that you are surprised that this would happen in a "good" neighborhood. The hurricane doesn't know zip codes and people are desperate for power, all over the island.

You don't need to pull the thread or deactivate your account. I am not trying to "flame" you, I just pointing out that we are all impacted by the storm, in varying ways, and I agree that people shouldn't do trespass to plug in a phone, but people are really desperate in all types of neighborhoods.

First of all, relax. Nothing happened. No one broke in. No one really stole anything from you. My guess is someone needed to charge their cell phone. Oh look! A house with electric. But it's late....I see a socket! Let's plug in for a few and get a charge. No harm. No foul.
People have a lot more important things to think about then robbing anyones house at this point. That being said, I haven't heard of any confirmed reports of people breaking into homes or looting. There was one incident I'm aware of downtown and a few in Coney island but that's it.

A woman in Mastic Beach had her home broken into. Her son is 2 and is battling cancer. She was on Nancy Grace. People ARE looting and burglarizing, but probably not homes with lights on.

I was hesistant on even posting on here, I usually stick to non controversial topics- but what has happened to LIFamilies? It used to be nice on here. I have been a member of this site and liweddings for years.I am a 2004 bride. Maybe it is time to leave this site and delete my account. I am looking for support here, not to be flamed. I might even pull this thread.

Then delete your account!!! At this point you just sound like you're whining with your use of caps and insinuating that you'll leave the site.
And for the record yes I would absolutely be freaked out if I were in your shoes too......but like another poster said if this is the worst of your worries right now then count your blessings.

That's awful. There are always going to be assholes running around but most people are not going to be doing such things. And yes, I agree, if the lights are on less likely to be burglarized.

Some people's behavior in times of need is simply disgusting. I am appalled at some of the people I am seeing out and about. No common courtesy, no respect or consideration for anyone but themselves. It's just awful. I guess when things are bad is when people show their true colors.........good or bad.

I find all of this very disturbing for our society. The fact is its been only 4 days. Does it suck to not have power for 4 days, of course it does but you cannot just discard the rules of society because you feel desperate for electricity of all things.

I have heard of so many instances of a breakdown of civility in so many different areas that it is really astonishing. And I do not think that anyone gets a pass for their behavior.

Re: Just upset: Sandy related

I would be totally creeped out by it. If I came home and saw someobe using and utlet and they said "Hey, do you mnd" , I'd say no, but someone in my backyard at night would totally creep me out.

I guess I don't live in a "GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD" but I've had people in the yard several times. We heard police helicopters one night and apparently whoever they were chasing was hiding under my BILs BBQ and broke our fence climbing it. It really IS a creepy feeling.

BUT I don't think I would have called the police. I don't think it was unreasonable of you to do so, but I wouldn't expect them to really do anything about it, especially in light of everything else they are dealing with in terms of search and rescue, guarding gas stations, protecting damaged homes and stores, etc.

Maybe it's me living in NYC and being used to it, but I never expect the police to respond to any minor complaint. If there's no immediate danger it's going on the back back back burner.

I would have been upset, but I wouldn't have called the cops. I would however put a pad lock on my gate at night. Yes, they may jump over the fence, but I would give me a little piece of mind.

sorry- just fustrated and annoyed. I never start drama on here, I was just venting .The point was that I feel violated. Ring my bell and ask that is all I am asking, no one is entitled to enter a yard and just go in and do this. For all I know it could have been a crazy person w/ a gun in my yard! I understand people are frustrated, but it does not entitle them to do this. Like I said I have had many people here all week, recharging batteries, hot showers, hot meals, , to warm up etc. Ring the doorbell and ask, I would gladly say yes.
