Just Watched The Weather Channel--This Is Looking SCARY For Long Island...
They now said Irene is at cat 4 with a potential to get to a cat 5! Once it gets to our area it will probably be a 2 which is MASSIVE for us! They said this is MAJOR, get ready for no power for days and not to be compliant, we ARE getting this
NUTS!!!

I am not sweating it. Hurricanes never amount to anything on the island. The Weather Channel and other news channels LOOOOOVE this kind of stuff and they just hype it up and get everyone all crazy and in the end, we'll probably just have some rain this weekend.

Re: Just Watched The Weather Channel--This Is Looking SCARY For Long Island...
I wouldnt worry too much. Hurricane gloria was a cat 3 and a major hurricane when it made landfall.
I would think that yes we will lose power on LI, tree's will fall, Beach erosion will occur and I'm sure loose shingles, patio furniture etc will be destroyed, but I wouldnt PANIC.
A Category 2 wont knock your house down.
Just be safe, secure things that will fly away, have enough water and food and watch a lot of good movies on TV hoping the power stays on.

I think Gloria ended up being a Cat 1 when it got up here. Pretty sure the last one that was above a Cat 1 was the Long Island Express back in 1938?

There have been significant hurricanes in the past and there are sure to be in the future. Whether or not Irene will prove to be significant for us remains to be seen. But I think it is important for the media to warn us so we can be prepared. That was the whole reason weather forecasting was invented.

Gloria in terms of hurricanes was a joke. I lived in FL for 4 years with a Cat 5 heading right towards my town..........now that's scary!! That's worth freaking out over. By the time they get up here they are downgraded to a tropical storm at best 99% of the time. I am just not worrying about it.

I agree weather forecasting is great however, as with most everything, the news media hypes everything up and gets people so crazy and it's usually for no reason. They sensationalize everything!

I think it depended on where you lived.
We had no power for 9 days straight, pure hell. LOL.... We had severe flooding, and our house took what seemed like 6 months to dry out... and Every single house on our block had trees fall on them. Our garage was demolished... We couldnt even get home to our house for 2 days b/c the trees were blocking the roads. The south shore and the east end got hit BAD,. really bad.
I do agree though that the hype is just ridiculous at times. I think they want you to be prepared but at the same time, this is a weathers man in Ny's wet dream, like a major snowstorm, etc.....
I dont think anyone should panic or worry that much , just know what damage excessive wind can do , and be prepared.

No it wasn't Katrina, but LI is not set up for hurricanes (ie power lines above ground, huge trees, lack of readiness for flooding). These are real problems we could face. 10 days with no power and a huge tree on your house isn't a joke.

Re: Just Watched The Weather Channel--This Is Looking SCARY For Long Island...
Granted, what the South deals with is way more dire- but Gloria was pretty hairy IMO. There were power lines down in my backyard, power was out for a while and a few huge trees fell on my street, taking up sidewalks. Fortunately no one in my neighborhood was hurt but there was a lot of damage.
I am about 60 miles north of NYC but I will be preparing, and hoping no trees fall on my house.

Re: Just Watched The Weather Channel--This Is Looking SCARY For Long Island...
Forgive my ignorance on storms of the past, but i believe gloria was a 1 when she came up here. Bob was a 2 when he hit eastern li in 1991. But bob hit the east end. As i said in the other thread: the eastern side of a storm is much worse than the western side. If the center of irene is west of you, be prepared for some not so good weather. (i am puting it nicely). We still have 24 to 48 hours of this storm before possible landfall down south. If she doesnt hit land south of us and rides up the east coast, we could be in trouble. If she doesnt weaken with a landfall, all that will weaken her iscooler wAter. This needs to be taken seriously, unless we know for sure she wont hit long island.

Yes, Gloria was a category 1 and Bob a category 2. And ITA, I think we should take this storm, like any other, seriously. Many experts believe we (as in LI) are long overdue for a major hurricane.

Re: Just Watched The Weather Channel--This Is Looking SCARY For Long Island...
Here's the hurricane history for LI:
September 21, 1938 as a Category 3 (winds 111-130 mph) and devastated the coast of Long Island with storm surges of 10 to 12 feet and was responsible for, in total, 700 deaths, $308 million in damage, and 63,000 people homeless between Long Island and New England. The LI Express was so powerful that it created the Shinnecock Inlet and widened the Moriches Inlet in Suffolk County.
The Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944 was a Category 3 (winds 111-130 mph) *
Hurricanes Carol and Edna of 1954 were both Category 3 hurricanes when they hit Long Island and Connecticut. *
Hurricane Donna of 1960 started as a Category 4 and hit Nassau County as a Category 3 (winds 111-130 mph).
Hurricane Gloria of 1985 began as a Category 3 hurricane when it hit Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, but was considered a Category 1 (winds 74-95 mph) when it reached Nassau County. Gloria devastated the U.S., including serious damage to Nassau County.

Gloria was a cat 1. And I have vivid memories of that (however, I did live on the water). We didn't have power for 5 days. A Cat 2 for here would be bad

ITA. I lived in South Florida for the first 25 years of my life and have been through countless hurricanes. We've always boarded up every single pane of glass in our house for every hurricane over a category 1. People here don't do that, and if you have a category 2 or HIGHER, there are objects flying through the air and high speeds. No tape on your windows is going to stop a tree limb from coming through your slider at 100mph. Not to mention the worst part, which is the storm surge. I live a block from the bay, so I don't take the threat of a hurricane lightly. I know better than that from experience.

If we loose power like we did in Gloria (we lost it for 2 weeks!) will they delay the opening of school? Ugh, that would really screw up our year. Go away IRENE!

Ironically enough FEMA doesn't think we are in enough of a bad zone to require flood insurance . We do have it though.
My parents and MIL are in the Babylon area, so that is our game plan if this thing stays on its current course. Of course DH said he's not leaving and won't even discuss bringing in the lawn furniture at this point
