Yea, but with four years of college, plus a masters degree plus hours of professional development.....most of it is well deserved.

I feel bad for preschool teachers. They do so much with our little ones and get paid pennies.

I know how you feel as after almost 20 years of experience and at the same job, I still make LESS than a teacher makes starting their first year.

Re: Just wow.. Kudos to Teachers but wow

Dont get me wrong.. I'm not saying they have it EASY.. NO WAY!

Heck I think HS teachers should be given medals of honor!!

Just a shame after 16yrs, 3 professional designations, licensed and literally HOURS and HOURS of class room time spent to maintain my knowledge and I'm still paid less than the wonderful people who will teach my daughter and they get better benefits than I do.

Well said.

A lot of teachers (myself included) get a little touchy. It's nice change of pace to hear from a supportive parent!

Why does everyone compare their salaries to teachers? Why not other professions? Just curious.... You never really hear teachers saying "after x amount if years, 3 masters, 4 certifications, and hundreds of hours of professional development- why don't I get paid as much as a xyz...."

Agreed. To add to that why not become a teacher? Do you have a BA? A masters? depending on where you live (I know you are OOS, right?) it may not be that hard to be certified if you have a liberal arts degree you may only be a few classes off!

I was surprised to find what pre-k teachers make. The ones I know have class time a total of 5 hours and have an assistant and make just about 100k.

I'm not saying I don't agree, just that I always assumed that they made less.

I don't know how many pre-K teachers you know, but I can assure you they don't all make that.

The ONLY way to be paid well as a Pre-K teacher is if you're in a school district that offers Pre-K, then you're paid on the same scale as the others teachers in grades K-6.

But since most districts don't offer Pre-K you're forced to work in one of the independent Pre-K's that are around and they don't pay anywhere near what a public school district would pay their teachers.

Where are they working that they make that?!? All the pre-k teachers I know make no where near that especially if they are a pre-k teacher in a daycare.

Teachers deal with numerous kids for 6 hours a day having to deal with getting them to sit, listen, not talk, behave and most importantly learn the information that is being taught. They also deal with the CRAP the states are handing out as well as district administration and the complaints from parents as well. I give teachers a LOT of credit!!

They are universal pre-k teachers in a district that offers 5 day a week pre-k. It is true.

For the record once again, I don't bash teachers or what they make. I simply was surprised.

I would assume then that they are certified elementary teachers, which again means they have to have a bachelors and masters degree and have to do everything a k-5 teachers has to do.

Absolutely. To work within the public schools you HAVE to be certified. My teaching certificate is for grades PreK-6 so if I wanted to teach in a district that had Pre-K I would be qualified and paid accordingly. Chat Icon

That's a really smart idea and I think it's good that they have options of doing any grade level pre k - 6.

I don't think I could be a teacher. Maybe a professor, but certainly not a k-12 teacher. I don't begrudge their pay. I rather make less and not have to deal with kids that don't share my DNA. Chat Icon I know teachers do a lot and are always under scrutiny.

I don't want to add to that pool of people who bash teachers. I can't judge; I'm not a teacher myself.

Off Topic, but lets talk Electrician.. they make so much money. I went to school for 7 years and my DH knocks me out if he has a good year. Granted he can have a horrible year with lay offs but still, I was layed off too.

All my corporate buddies used to be shocked when he told them his salary. It was surprising how many comments I got because I was married to an "Electricia".
