Keeping your (tall) home cool in the summer?
We just moved into our first home...a taalll townhouse.
The top floor is SWELTERING compared to the bottom three. We are probably going to buy a ceiling fan, and have already bought dark drapes.
Anyone have advice on how else to deal with this? We dont think the homeowners association would let us have a window a/c.

What is on that floor? Do you spend a lot of time on that floor? For us, our 3rd floor is the attic and we keep the windows open in the summer to let out the heat (they have screens).

do you have an attic? If so, invest in an attic fan. We are contemplating putting one it.

Ask the Homeowners Assoc. what they do. Don't they have the same style house as you?

Im sure we'll think of something... how about a portable A/C? I have seen them advertised for sale for around $400 at PC Richard's

Re: Keeping your (tall) home cool in the summer?
we used to have a 3 story townhouse. the third level was half walk-in attic space and the other half was a large loft over our master bedroom. our association didn't allow window AC units, but the previous owner's had installed an AC unit into the wall of the loft with the outside part going into the attic space. Is there a way you could do something like that? An attic fan also definitely helps if you can put one in. Or can you get one of those freestanding AC units that you could use up there to provide additional cooling?
My other suggestions are: keep the blinds/shades down put blinds on skylights if you have them if you have any rooms that you're not really using, shut the vents in there and close the doors at night, shut the vents downstairs so the upstairs will get cool keep the AC on even when you're not home-it will take forever to cool down if you let it get too hot

Re: Keeping your (tall) home cool in the summer?
We don't have a "tall" house but it's a cape so the bedrooms are upstairs (with an attic above it) with slanted ceilings and it gets H O T up there (there is literally a 30 degree difference between the upstairs and the basement)! We just had a fan system installed up there. There is one fan (pretty large) in the hallway and one in the attic going outside. The fan in the hallway lifts the air up and blows it up and out the attic fan. It's a little loud but WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!! Don't get me wrong it's still gets hot but sooooooooooooooooooooo much better!

What about a portable A/C for the upstairs? We bought one for our MB upstairs and used it last night and it can be moved from one room to another.

If we didn't have an attic fan our 2nd floor would be much warmer even with central a/c. It makes a HUGE difference.

We have blackout shades in our bedroom because the sun sets on that side of the house. I'm not 100% happy that the room is always dark, but I LOVE that it's always FREEZING!!
