Keyspan Question..

OK - so we got our first bill - an astronomical $312 - but it was an estimated bill - and the people who lived in the house before us had 85 kids - and the stove and dryer are both gas, so the estimated meter reading was way off of our actual - no problem, I can type in my own meter reading next month...

but i signed up for online account access - and it says if I sign up for balanced billing, my monthly bill would be only $132 - does that seem low? should we wait until we are in the house for a year (which I thought was the "rule", but I guess not??)

any advice would be appreciatedChat Icon

Re: Keyspan Question..

I think that you should wait the year to see what your bill will be...that budget might be based on the previous owners. My Keyspan bill just this month went over $300 before that it was as low as $65 and was for the beginning of the winter in the low $100s. Also our house has old windows and isnt' insalated properly so we have the heat high. I would wait the year and see how it goes.

Re: Keyspan Question..

thanks - thats what I was thinking - its just me and FH - the previous owners had a lot of kids and were kinda crazyChat Icon - we dont even live there yet - the heat doesnt go past 65 and i havent used the dryer, and i am only there on the weekends.

eta: if you read your own meter, when do you do it? before it says when your meter reading is, or can you do it anytime?

Re: Keyspan Question..

we are not on a budget with Keyspan because we only pay 3 months of high bills and the rest are low...we use the gas for heat and our hot water tank.

During the warmer months we pay anywhere from $45-$65 and during the winter months from $200-$300.

I would wait a few months before going on a budget.

Same here.

And definitely make them aware of an "actual" reading in the near future. We always had estimated reading and no one ever came to read our gas meter (its in a side yard and they don't have access because of a locked gate). DH called and gave them the actual reading over the phone and we were credited for more than $600. Wwll worth the call!

Re: Keyspan Question..

I would wait too to see what else happens. I get an actual reading every other month, so if it's a little high on the estimated months I know it will go down the next month.

But from what I hear that if you pay more on the estimated plan, you will get a refund, but not first hand experience.

That is what happened to me, and to be honest I eventually got rid of balanced billing b/c it ending up costing us more as we have erratic usage in our house.
