Re: Kid on a leash?!
I vaguely remember my mom using one on me once or twice. I wasn't very mischevious but I did wander off a few times.
I agree with Barb, 30 years ago you saw them more often because many mom's had kids close in age and couldn't put them in a multiple-stroller.
I'm not in the situation of being a parent, yet, and have no idea how hard it is to keep an eye on them, especially, in a crowded public place so I wouldn't think any less of a mom for using one. I think it's more responsible than haviing your child wander.

Re: Kid on a leash?!
When I was younger it used to freak me out to see a kid on a harness. Now I don't think it's that big of a deal, especially since the harness could prevent a child from wandering away and getting hurt or getting abducted.

That stopped her.

I find it odd a parent would put a kid on a leash...maybe if they did not give the kid so much sugar the kid would not be hyper and running all over the place, therefore not need the leash?
So only kids with lots of sugar run around? All other kid sits there with his hands folded in thier lap and obeys their parents? Wow I'd like to take a few parenting lessons from you. As a future mom of twins if one runs one way and the other runs the other I'd like to learn how I'm supposed to stop them both at once from going into the street. I guess I'll have to remember not to give them sugar. I honestly hate the way leashes look, but what this world has come to with child abductors, my children's safety is more important than looks.

I also could not stand the thought of them....then I had my daughter
She won't sit in a stroller and let me tell you - she is lightening fast. I do plan on getting one for her because with 2 young children you do have to take every precaution you can.
Unfortunately I'm sure she'll find a way out of it

before I had a child I never agreed on moms putting kids on a "leash". But now I see how there are many kids who run away from the parents in the stores, in parking lots, streets. If you kid does not listen, and you feel safer with him on a leash. Then so be it IMO.
This is exactly what I was going to say.

on vacay once to the Kern River in cali we camped on a beachy type area and there was one other couple there and when we looked over at them they had their 3 year old leased to a stake in the ground while they went about their swimming etc!

That's disgusting.
ETA: I'm one of 9 and my parents occasionally had to harness a few of us. I did buy one for my son when he turned 2 and used it for all of 10 minutes in Newport, RI (had my newborn in the stroller). I threw it out at the hotel. It was too weird for me, personally.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with them if they're used for the right purpose.

Re: Kid on a leash?!
before i started working with special needs children i thought that putting your kid on a leash was ridiculous. while i don't think that a leash should take the place of teaching your child to behave appropriately and stay by your side, there are many instances where a leash can be invaluable, especially if your child is hyperactive or impulsive (which BTW is NOT caused by sugar). the safety of your child is FAR more important than anything else. if it's going to keep your child safe then by all means use one! that being said, i HATE when i see parents who let their little ones wander around with no clue where they arre or what they're doing! idiots!

Re: Kid on a leash?!
OMG! I can't believe about staking a kid and leaving him!! That's awful!
The first time I saw the leash I was sort of horrified, but the more I think about it, the smarter it is. I've seen them a lot at Disney World and i think it's brilliant, SO many kids, and say your kid sees Mickey, and RUNS to him, and he's one of 100 kids in the area wearing the Mickey poncho, you're SOL. I think in certian situations the leash s a good thing. It's better than a lot of parents I see, I can;t tell you how many prnts I've seen walking 15 feet ahead of toddlers and I am always thinking "i could kidnap ths kid right now and these aprents would never know it" Not that i want to kidnap kids, but I'm in such close proximity to the kids and the parents are walking alog havinga conversation, how do they know I'm not a kidnapper? How do they even know WHO is near their kids? How do they know the kid is even behind them anymore?

Re: Kid on a leash?!
I don't know if I would use one, but I would never judge anyone who did, unless I've been in their shoes and know why they use it.
With all the child abductions there are, some may feel more comfortable using a harness. Also, I'd rather see a child walking around then always in a stroller.

My biggest fear is them running in two different directions too.
Don't knock it until you have kids that are abel to walk.

Re: Kid on a leash?!
Honestly, unless you are a parent, it is really unfair of you to judge that person. Harnesses, when used properly, are invaluable. Kids are very quick. Also, we used it when my son just started walking because it gave him some confidence to walk independently and gave us peace of mind that he wasn't going to crack his head open on the floor.
The analogies to treatment of animals is really unfair, especially from people who do not have children.

I always thought it was strange but know that I have a child, I will take every precaution I can to make sure that no one will take him.
You might be a strict parent but that doesn't mean that your child will always listen. They are just children.
I have all intentions of getting one. It just takes a second for a child to be abducted or run off.
I completely agree. I used to be against them but after seeing how a child (a 5 year old) was abducted in front of her mother at a walmart (her mother turned around for a second to grab something off a shelf) in Maine last month, I am all for them. IMHO, I could not give a flying flick about "how horrible" others think it is to "leash" your child. Think about that mother who child is abducted, if she had her "leashed" the predator would not have even tried to take her. We are living in a different world then when we all grew up and although it is sad that children have to be put in a harness to keep them safe, I would rather be safe than sorry.
agree- I don't see anything wrong with it.

Once you get beyond the image of a dog on a leash, what's really so wrong about putting a kid on a leash?
And anyway I know of people who treat their dogs better than they treat their kids anyway!

I absolutely see the need for these harnesses- especially if you are taking a young child into a very large, crowded and public place.
