Kitchen advice
So I have been inspired by some of the kitchen threads and the cheap makeover one, but dont see how it can help me.
This is a picture of my future kitchen. Since we wont have money for a while for a full makeover we were planning to take down the wallpaper, and change out the pink countertops and paint the walls.
But I am now not even sure if I can afford new formica countertops right away. Leaving me with the beautiful pink countertops you see here.
So would you: a) live with the wallpaper a while or b) take it down and paint a color that matches and then pick your next counter around the paint color or c) take it down and paint a color that matches with plans to repaint when you get new counters?
I am design challenged, I am sure this will the first of many posts asking for help.
Thanks Image Attachment(s):

Re: Kitchen advice
I think you would be surprised by how much of a difference taking down the wall paper and painting would make
Mici also posted a product by rustoleum yesterday that you can paint your countertops- she also has lovely pink countertops and wants them out-

Re: Kitchen advice
Honestly, I would prob not touch it until you can do both at the same time... Bc if you change the counters first its going to be hard to get access to the wallpaper to take it down.... If you paint first, you're going to have to do touch up with paint later on to the get areas that were hidden behind the countertop... But thats me, I like to do 1 complete room at a time bc i think it just makes life easier... If I do some here and some there, the some there will end up being forgotten about and nevering getting done KWIM?

Re: Kitchen advice
O gosh, for me that wallpaper would have to go. A fresh coat of paint is the CHEAPEST and easiest way to change the look of a room. If you pick something neutral, kind of a sand color, it might tone down the pink? The countertops are a bigger job so save that for when you have the cash, don't throw good money after bad "sprucing" them up if you're going to get rid of them anyway. And if the paint color doesn't work later, so what, it's literally less than $100 you'd have to spend to change it!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Kitchen advice
That's a lovely shade of pink
I would take down the wallpaper, skim coat the walls, etc ....
Look into that rustoleum product for the countertops. That would probably be the cheapest route. Also, if you have a tiny bit of money, Home Depot sells prefab formica countertops for a really really reasonable price. ($100 for a really long piece)
You can definitely improve the look of the kitchen for now with a little bit of $$$$.

Re: Kitchen advice
I would take off the wallpaper, which you are going to do anyway and paint for sure.

Re: Kitchen advice
Def. take the wallpaper down and paint.
There is also this product for countertops. It kind of looks like Corian when it's finished. Link
How would you like your kitchen to look? What color do you want in there? Try to think towards the future of what you want and for now paint the countertops with one of these products (I don't think they are too expensive), and paint the walls. You will feel like you have a whole new kitchen.
ETA: I would change the knobs as well to something more modern. Maybe brushed Nickel. Otherwise I really don't think your kitchen is that bad. Really!

Re: Kitchen advice
I would remove the wallpaper, paint and change the hardware. I don't think your pink countertops are ugly. I don't think your kitchen is ugly at all - I personally would live with it as is but since you asked for suggestions I answered with what I would do on a budget.

Re: Kitchen advice
1. I would def. take down the wallpaper and paint the color that you like. IF you have to keep the pink countertops paint a neutral color. I think the wallpaper makes the kitchen look dated
2. I have a galley style kitchen and needed 2 long countertops, I couldn't afford granite so I got laminate countertops at HD. No special order just went and picked up the ones they have stocked in the design I liked. It cost a total of $174 for both pieces. It looks great. In the future they can always be replaced.
3. Looks like a nice space and nice cabinets so you won't have to spend much $$ to get a more updated look
Edited b/c I forgot to add that I think painting the countertops is a great idea also

Re: Kitchen advice
I would def take down the wallpaper. I suggest renting a steamer if it's really stuck on there. I would then change the hardware to stainless and paint the kitchen grey. Not a dark but a subtle grey... I would also do stainless canisters too. Just to give it some more of a modern look.

Re: Kitchen advice
We also have pink countertops (why in God's name someone invented them is beyond me ) and have wallpaper with pink flowers too. I am going to use the rustoleum product on my countertops, replace the sink and paint the walls. We will eventually redo the kitchen with new cabinets and granite, but to get rid of the pink and make it look a lot nicer we're doing this for now. Paint and rustoleum is so much cheaper than finding new counters!
ETS: When we moved in, we replaced all the hardware because some cabinets/drawers were missing pieces.

Re: Kitchen advice
Thanks everyone! I didnt realize how cheap formica countertops are, I dont have a lot of counterspace so maybe I will price it out. The countertop paint looks really interesting too.
I am so bad at this, I have no vision for these kinds of things LOL
I'll definately post after pictures when we figure it out

Re: Kitchen advice
Honestly, I would take down the wallpaper and paint the room maybe a light tan/gray color? and then change the handles on the cabinets. it might not look so bad for the time being, and it's all very inexpensive.

Re: Kitchen advice
we got this Formica counter top from lowes, with the front molding, and the sink cut out for $150. You only need to supply measurements.
In your kitchen, I would remove the wallpaper, skim the walls and paint either a shade of Beige or Sage green.
For the counter, I would look into the formica at Lowes. They will be cheaper than HD.
For the backsplash, I would look into something inexpensive. They have stick on tiles, bead board, or the Copper look tiles that are really inexpensive and they stick on.
Change the knobs on the cabinets. How is the floor in the kitchen?

Re: Kitchen advice
I have a HUGE kitchen with a cathedral ceiling and the WORST country-bumpkin looking wall-paper you can imagine.
At this point, we are leaving it as is until we can afford to hire a designer and afford to do the whole remodel.
DH has toyed with the idea of painting over everything but it's just such a huge project to take on.
